To me it looks like he is relying on people's gullibility, and that has worked for him in the past. They close ranks, the sons, brothers, lawyers, documentary film makers, and repeat their lies until they gaslight people. Kathleen was a brilliant and successful woman who brought in a lot of money. He knew that was over and he killed her for the money. She was no longer of any use to him. You can see he doesn't care about her at all and even little details like saying she fell because she was drunk strip her of dignity. Slimeball extarordinaire.

The biggest, truly bizarre bright red flag was when they magically discovered the blow poke in the garage a couple of days towards the end of the trial and what Clayton said to his father about it-- not directly, according to Michael but implied strongly and understood clearly by him that if his father murdered his mother he'd get rid of the incriminating weapon. Does anybody remember the footage of Michael Peterson talking to his lawyers about one of his sons Clayton, who I think was the one who "found" this blow poke mysteriously in the garage? I'll paraphrase Michael discussing the conversation between him and his son: 'look if there's any chance whatsoever that the forensics could find blood or hair on this thing, I NEED you to tell me...and you know, basically, I'll toss it into the deepest parts of the lake if there's anything on it'. HOW THE HELL WAS THAT NOT A BRIGHT RED FLAG?! Who talks like that about their beloved mother? It sounded to me that even if his father had murdered his mother, he would stick by him anyhow. Shyeah, really happy family there. His kids look like creepy cult members. Please tell me I wasn't the only one whose eyes flashed at that scene.
There was a distinct lack of feeling from the children towards their poor dead (step)mother. They all cried and cooed over the dad the entire length of the show, which read a little 'cult-like' to me, but there was just NOTHING in the entire documentary to suggest that the children adored and missed the ersatz mother they knew for so long. Nothing. They wanted it to be very clear how much emotional intimacy and affection they had for their dad, but did nothing of the sort when it came to their dead mother who met a sudden and gruesome end..."falling down the stairs".
I also had the vibe of a cult. After watching the series I was left with super mixed feelings, didn't know what to believe, but there was something very fishy about his attitude and my first instinct was 'he's guilty 100%'. During the movie I kept doubting, but it could be because that's exactly what he is trying to do by making this movie. The fact that he adopted the two girls after their mom died the way she did in Germany was suspicious to me, altho in the movie it was presented as an act of kindness. A guy who spanks his children, it's disturbing. It was sad to see how Todd is normalising Mike's behaviour ('I don't have friends who weren't spanked, he never showed any agression towards a non child of his, meaning towards an adult, a partner of his, a wife, nothing like that), which it's common in people who've been abused not to accept the reality, that their parent might have done something very bad to them. Also, I read that in 1994 Clayton, who was 19 at the time, was arrested for attempting to firebomb the Duke University Administration Building. So who knows what all his kids have been through. I understood Tood was having problems with the alcohol.. and the reason Mike didn't want him to testify was that people won't dig into Todd's life and find out his drivers license was susppended due to drunk driving. Someone was saying 'what if his Todd did it and Mike called 911 and tried to cover for Todd and that's why he sounded so weird... Idk... Caitlin and her aunts were the only ones who didn't want to believe that it was an accident. It seemed to me like the rest of the family was so desperate for Michael not to be found guilty, but didn't care what really happened that night. The only conclusion I can draw here is that I should get a life. :)) Cause I've binged the series and now I keep on doing extra research because I still don't know what to believe. What if Mike was just a narcissist, having poblems in his life, hiding things, not because he was a murderer, but because he didn't care about others, but himself? Or what if he really did it and he managed to get away with it (after the years in prison)?

Even in the early episodes he firstly claims to have explicitly told her and that she was fine with it, only to later edit it saying she must’ve been aware due to the gay jokes she was making. She didn’t know.

Micheal Peterson has a trail of death in his wake....two men in vietnam that he commanded and died at the hands of friendly fire due to his strategy and lack of reading the battle field. A girl in a car accident in japan. Liz Ratliff in germany who he was seen fleeing the house the nite before her body was discovered. And of course kathleen....who he was having serious issues both romantically/domestically/financially prior to her death. He's only earned money from books.....hes not held a real job. Todd has since changed his tune. When HIS mother was allowed to suffer and die from a heart attack as Michael sat on his ass and refused to call for help, he saw his Dad for who he really is. Not his fault for not realizing sooner. His mother supported Michael vehemently through Kathleen's murder.

My opinion, watching the documentary and then again. He did it and I have no doubt in my mind, If anything his son Todd and other family members came off very strange..in their behavior for example. Not so sure about this alleged computer virus. In earlier episodes (around the blow-poke find) it becomes evident that his sons (specifically) would do anything to protect their dad. Even get rid of potential evidence of foul play. This could easily be a lie to make it seem like Kathleen knew about his secret life. I don’t think she did.

Todd’s mother Patricia and Kathleen we’re good friends. Mike had an affair with Kathleen in Patricia’s bed. So essentially Michael left Patricia for Kathleen. So there were a lot of secrets. Todd has experienced a lot of trauma. I don’t know what happened to Kathleen, was it Michael, an owl or something else…we will most likely never know. But Michael had more trauma and passed that along for generations. This happens with a lot of families including my own. Which is why it’s so important to identify them and heal them.

So did anyone ever think about this theory? If you look at the video footage from ´The Staircase´ you can see Michaels's biological sons and one of his adopted daughters (I think it´s the oldest, but I am not sure), really look alike. I actually think Michael is the biological father of one of the girls. This is also why he was so attached to them early on and later adopted them. Most of the time kids are being adopted by family members if both parents passed away not by ´family friends´.
I think Michael killed both women because they wanted to expose this big secret. Michael loves his girls so extremely much and he became desperate to lose them. You know how fathers are with their daughters. They come above everything. This is also why he took the girls to America when he and his first wife got a divorce and his sons stayed with their mother at first.
By the way, I am posting this post on different videos about the case because I have been thinking about it a lot haha

Here’s the problem I have with Mikes children. The more they staunchly defend that marriage, painting him as this loving, devoted husband the more it seems like they are desperately trying to defend him at all costs. All the factual evidence that continually kept spilling out, evidence that would have been a surprise to them, they just continually painted him as this perfect man. Their behaviour for me started to come off as cult like. All marriages have ups and downs, small arguments. This “perfect” portrayal of heaven on earth marriage comes off as contrived. Lots of things also not brought up in the doc such as the life insurance apparently awarded to Mike with the bizarre tumble death of his first victim. Also Kathleen’s life insurance of $1.4 million in his name. Mike continually is on camera citing “I had no reason to kill her”. When in fact there were several reasons. He sounds ridiculous every time he makes that statement.

The fact that Kathleen knew about the pictures does not mean that she knew about mike's sexuality. He might have told her that the pictures came with the virus or something close to that. Back in 2001, people still knew little about computers stuff, less alone the internet. Kathleen was 48. Her generation knew close to nothing about that. He could have told her anything except the fact that he downloaded those pictures himself.

Yep, can anybody give any time stamps for the documentary where they kids talked through tears about how much they loved their mother/stepmother, how much they miss her, what was so great about her? I can't recall one single minute where the kids talked about how much they adored their mother/stepmother. Not one. So that's one red flag.
His initial response about how the police followed him from room to room said a lot to me. For if Peterson was so shocked and devastated then why would he remember that? Don't know what it is about the last name Peterson, but Drew, Michael, and Scott all killed their wives. the last name may be spelled a little different, but it means the same thing. all 3 of these vial humans in some cases killed more than 1 person. for instance, Michael killed 2 women a couple of decades apart but i believe for the same reason. "MONEY" this is a strong motive in most cases, but sometimes other objects are seen more important and that could be the reason. either way murdering your spouse should never cross your mind and if it does you better seek medical attention because at that point in time you can take action and stop it, after you kill them it's too late to save them or you. Not once did you see a natural outrage for being accused or sentenced for doing this terrible thing. That says it all. He is just still trying to control in the little way he can here.
