Four pairs of jeans, normal cycle, low soil level (8 mins wash time), medium water level, Catalyst option. Part 1 of 3 -- Catalyst treatment and main wash period.
I remember finding this video a while back and thinking “man I really love this washer.” Today, after spending years searching, and wishing I had one, I am finally able to say I own one of these. A Kenmore Elite Catalyst built in March of 2001!
@SpazChat Oh, nah not over washing. I know you can run these without the catalyst cycle. I just think having all the automatic dispensers, while they do indeed have their positive uses, was a bit much for me. I just like the standard set up with mechanical controls, like our 1990 and 2010 machine.
You are right. It doesn't do anything for small loads, but it's very effective with larger loads. That auger actually scrubs the clothes with its nubs on the underside of the auger spirals that you can't see. They aren't just for pulling the clothes down to the paddles quicker.
the ultra handwash cycle of this machine is interesting 1: it has a catalyst treatment regardless of if the option is on or isn't; the option just extends the treatment 2: the agitation portions are mostly soak cycles because the machine only does two periods of extra slow agitation that last about 10 seconds. this is part of why you can't turn off the catalyst treatment, because most of the cleaning is done in that part of the cycle (i know this because in a different video by someone else, the water being drained (or spun out because the agitation didn't thicken the oil enough to engage the neutral drain mechanism) is a brown color, meaning it's full of dirt
Can you give me the model number. I want to see if we can contact whirlpool and have them free make the whirlpool catalyst. I want one. I want a washer and the dryer. I want to have a tour of the washer and dryer and one video please.
+Whirlpool Washer Yes. 3-speed motor. High speed is used for drain and spin (except the initial Catalyst treatment) in the cycle shown. Agitation speed is determined by the cycle selected and water level. Normal cycle with medium water level = medium agitation speed.
@@howarddaley1161 You don't need boil washes or three hour long cycles to do what a classic agitator top loader will do tops in 35 -40 minutes or so at their longest cycles . What do you people do that you need to boil your clothes ?
@@patcola7335 you think I'm an idiot? DO NOT WASH STAINED CLOTHES IN HIGH TEMP. You use water 30-55c to remove stains or wash them by hand. Colored and black clothes should not be washed in temperatures higher than 60c
What is different about the Catalyst model's physical/mechanical design that causes balancing issues in your experience vs. non-Catalyst direct-drive machines?
Flushes the detergent and spins it out [to the drain]? No. The detergent is flushed into the tub and mixed with a small amount of water. The concentrated solution sprayed over the clothes while the tub spins for a pretreatment.
@@DADoESofTX I have this machine and what colt said is something I always wondered... should I add more detergent when it starts to fill? It doesn't look necessary watching your video. I often don't use the catalyst setting b/c I just couldn't understand it. I always thought the detergent must be exiting!
@@tkgaines No need to add more detergent. The full normal dose of detergent is to be added at the start so the Catalyst spray is a concentrated solution for stain treatment, that's its purpose. There's a valve that diverts the water during the Catalyst spin to shower over the clothes instead of draining. The Catalyst water is retained and the wash fill is added to it.

This was by far the best conventional washer they ever had. The catalyst soak action really worked
Brilliant design by Whirlpool. I wish they had these machines today.
One of Whirlpool's better machines.

I just love watching that thing spin.
I am a HUGE fan of direct drive Whirlpools, but in my opinion, the Catalyst was just a little too excessive for me. (used it at a friend's house once)

This is one cool machine!
does it heat the water i mean a frontload gets really hot and takes about 40 mins on main wash
i love this machine
I need to try and find one of these used. Was there a kenmore version too?
There was a Kenmore version. It was called catalyst...not to be confused with calypso which was a completely different design.
How do u run it with the lid open?
It belongs to a neighbor, always intended for use by tenants at one of his rental properties. It was moved there after the testing run.
The spin is the catalyst action
Thanks. Wow. From the look of it I expected 2010.
That is a cool washer. Can you show me a load of laundry on a regular cycle on a regular speed?
Per the serial number, manufactured 39th week of 2002.
Watching a washer spin with water is just confusing
It's a spray rince
Catalyst treatment. Sorta like Waveforce action.
Even on this small load the bottom of the auger has some effect on the turnover.
Does that machine lock the lid during the Catalyst treatment or stop if it is lifted at that part?
No, it doesn't lock the lid. If you open the lid it will stop, and once closed it starts back up. Had mine since 1999.

Get me one of those washing machine for my house 🏡
These had high failure rate, mine lasted 3 years before breaking.
what happened to your Calypso?
hello i have this same washer it doesnt soak or spin neither does it wk on other cycles can u help.me
what do these retail at?
Doesn't the machine have a high speed winding?

LOL i want this WASHING MACHINE!!!!!!!!1!!!
DARN IT!!
These Kenmore/Whirlpools were the best conventional top load washers ever. I don't know why they stopped making them with the catalyst feature
This video is giving me a serious woodrow. I don't know if I can last much longer. Not going to make it to Part 2 tonight.
i love catalyst, and i am from germany
henene4. Germany makes American washers look like moronic toys. My Mom had a Miele, my Aunt had a Bauknecht 488S, you want to see clean clothes.

@SpazChat whew, that's a lot of stuff!
Ha! And I thought the LG Waveforce and Samsung AquaJets were new ideas! :)
I have one of these
My dad got rid of the same whirlpool because it was loud
And she actually doesn't have enough water in the tub, Water level is set too low
wow
an upright trying to ack like a front loader
tell me what the tophalf of the agitator is doing---NOTHING!!!!!!!! Just sliding past the clothes

spin
