There is also a metal clip that holds that sensor in that you are missing. You can see the slots for it.

Mine just started acting up. To my knowledge it is the factory sensor and has never been replaced. Doing that today. 😀
Update: Temp sensor swapped. Running like a champ now.

When I replaced the Temp II sensor I also cleaned the electrical contacts on the wiring harness and the sensor with electrical contact cleaner. I did apply a little bit of dielectric grease to the connector. I've driven through some intense rain since and so far the issue has not presented itself again.

You answered all the questions I had. Thanks. Only vanagon owners know that you should always carry weird spares like that. I actually carry a spare ECU hahaha.

You should look into replacing that connector. It looks like it is broken on the top. Also like Marco said it looks like it is missing the rubber seal. I recently replace my whole wiring harness (video on my channel). I think I am going to go back and put dielectric grease on all my connectors just to be safe (as I do live in wet Washington).

Hey I have a 1.9 Vanagon digijet. The bentley manual says the AFC should read 2300 to 2700 ohms for pins 2 and 7. My reading is 0 ohms with ignition on. I removed the female connector on the Temp II to test, and no ohms. Do you think I'm having a wiring issue or am I reading this wrong?

Check page 108 in the Bentley manual. Pins 6 & 9 on the ECU connector are for the Temp II sensor, ignition off.

Von Westy Hm my book isn’t numbered like that. I’m looking at page 24.20 for the pins and 9 is empty on my ECU.

@@GJOSE15 this is the link from The Samba that had the test recommendations and chart for the Digijet Temp II. Hope this helps! www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=692589&highlight=temp+ii+sensor

Did you check ohms on the sensors? They shouldn't go bad like that so quickly, so maybe the problem is somewhere else?

I didn't check the ohms on the sensor or from the Temp II plug to ECU. If the issue reoccurred that would have been the next troubleshooting step, along with probably replacing the plug. So far the issue has not returned since the last sensor swap.

Check the resistance value at the ECU plug as well - super easy to do. I found both my O2 and coolant sensor values way off (almost open) due to corrosion at the plugs. Probably the best thing to do at this point is replace the entire ECU harness.

I got a 91 same thing happens to me and I don't know now where to go did you already resolved the issue?
