Hey thanks for making this video it helped comfirm what I needed to know for my own purchase. I just picked up 2 pack of the TP-Link's on Amazon for $49.18 with prime. I searched on all the sites to see who had the best price. I made the purchase but never saw a comparison of the other one I was looking at. You summed this up nicely and I enjoyed your comparison. I figured TP-Link was good since I use them for my WiFi extender and powerline adapters for years.
I've used both of these in my house for a couple of years, but found that the TP-LINK plugs (with the KASA app) are far superior in WiFi connectivity, ease of setup, and functionality. Here's what I mean. 1. WiFi - The Wemo plugs and switches would lose connectivity on my wireless network. Where the device installed, I have a signal strength of -60dBm or better. 2. Setup - For the Wemo devices, you have to connect to their Adhoc SSID to set them up. For the Kasa, you do not as the setup is done entirely through the KASA app. 3. Functionality - They both seem to work with the Google Home or Alexa apps, although, the TP-Link devices don't lose connectivity I have 35+ WiFi /IOT devices in my house behind a Palo Alto firewall. I have built security policies for each type of device to maintain a good security posture.
I owned the Wemo for 8 hours and had to manually reboot twice after it lost wifi connection. The router was 3 feet away. I returned it and got the TP Link
I got the TP Link HS105 also. But my one gripe is that I cannot turn off the LED indicator. I have the two pack and I use one for the light and the other for the fan in my bedroom. The problem is when I turn off the light and just have the fan running. The LED indicator on the plug is very bright at night. almost like a night light. and there's no option to turn off that LED. I have to put something to cover that LED in order for the room to be completely dark.
I do hope they release some update and firmware update that will allow you to turn off the LED. Many of us can only sleep in a completely dark room. If there is some LED blaring around. You wouldn't be able to sleep.
By not turning on an appliance after after a blackout, the WeMo might stop power surges flowing back into appliances. With the use of smart speakers (Google Home and Alexa) you could have both. Did you buy WeMo sensors? It’s a real shame they discontinued those. IFTTT is toooooo slow.
@@Wanderer001_Reviews fyi. "Belkin has designated support for WEMO devices and for further assistance, you may contact our WeMo hotline at 844-745-9366. They are available 24/7". I never was able to get ahold of anyone, but, thru other means I found out that my phone was old enough so not compatible with the Wevo app. (meaning the android store does not list the Wevo app)
@Fabrice Lorenceau same here wemo has been buggy so far tp link has been pretty reliable. Could be a firmware issue but I've had a bunch of inconveniences by wemo not working remotely.
Good job with the video. The only point I disagree is your final assessment. I have been doing network automation for a long time. Because I travel a lot, it's important to me to be able access cameras, control my sprinkler system, etc. I can tell you from personal experience that nothing sucks more than a network peripheral going off-line for no reason. So for that reason, I would (and did) choose the WeMo. 45 seconds of reboot is very little trade-off for not having to physically be on site to reboot the plug. Honestly, for me, the "occasional reboot" was a deal breaker.
Ahhh....that's good to know! How would you compare apps? Honestly, I just need to be able to turn the thing on and off remotely. WeMo seems to do that. At this time I don't really feel the need for timed automation, but that me be something I consider in the future. That said... I have to say that, on my end, installing the WeMo app was a huge PITA. It wouldn't just download to my Air Pro OR Air 1. The WeMo app wasn't even visible in the App Store. I had to find it in the iTunes store, download it to my PC into iTunes, and then install it on my Air Pro via a legacy version of iTunes that still allows direct access to Apple devices. I'm a bit of a hacker, so this wasn't a huge deal for me, but I could see how somebody else would be dead in the woods. I found the entire WeMo set up very frustrating. I have a feeling my next purchase will be the TP Link offerings. That said... I notice there's a firmware update for the WeMo so it can be used with Apple HomeKit, which is something I never plan on using. I always refrain from updating WORKING units...LOL... Anyway.... Thanx again for the review. I subscribed to your channel. Please consider perusing my channel, as you may find something useful and/or entertaining there.
I liked the setup of TP over WeMo. TP has changed the layout a little, which bothers me, but if you are looking to just turn things on and off it works just fine.
I bought the WEMO first, but I did not like the size of it at all. For my second purchase, I got the TPLink, which was about $10 cheaper at the time. I am much happier with the TP Link's form factor. My only gripe is that the TPLink "clicks" loudly when you turn it off and on, whereas the WEMO does not. I ended up sticking with TPLINK for the rest of my purchases. I need many more of these plugs to get my house connected, and price is has become my concern. And again, I very much dislike the size of that WEMO -- I looks like it should have another outlet, but it doesn't.
Wemo has been nothing but a pain for me. I have two of the larger, older units and they maintain connectivity more reliably. The two Wemo minis I have are super flaky and don't work more often than they do. The app is buggy. For example, when I pasted my network password into the field to program a switch, the pasted characters aren't recognized. I have to add and delete a space from the keypad before the app recognizes the field has been filled. Troubleshooting tips from the support community have not been helpful resolving the flaky operation.
Have Wemo .. many .. tplink tried .. do prefer .. but my favorite by far is Insteon - more pricey, but has come down and far superior to both if you want something reliable and that will last
I'm gifting one of my TP Link smart plugs to a friend because I've replaced it's use on a lamp with a smart bulb. I've found it impossible to delete the old plug from my Kasa app. The app allows for adding devices & renaming them but not anything I can find for deleting them. Any ideas?
Where all your devices are listed, press and hold just to the left of the on off switch. A menu will pop up asking if you want to delete the item from your Kasa app.
I've had a couple wemos and they are super Buggy. the app lost connectivity many times where I had to manually reset the device it barely work remotely. The tp-link smart plug however it's been pretty Rock solid so far right now I have it controlling my Christmas lights and it's been awesome the app way more intuitive than the WeMo app if I had to recommend one it definitely would be the tp link
All of these companies (Eufy, TP-Link/Kasa, Wemo) do at least one extra thing that the other three do not. It's a ridiculous triangle of needing all three companies and apps to get the look and features that should be standardised.
I have many TP-Link products (2 of these mini outlets, and 5 color bulbs, 3 white bulbs) and I've fallen in love with the entire system! I also have many Amazon Echo's and Echo Dot's to control my amazing smart home devices.
Wemo Smart Plugs :None of the Chat room,or online community forum ideas worked, it came down to hooking these up close as possible to the router, eliminating any radio interference from lights and weak signal areas of your house. These were terrible to connect, no other way to call it. They acted like a 1400 baud modem trying to connect, i don't know why ,but really in this day and age of electronics, plug and play means plug and play now...not 3 days later after you have followed every conceivable idea in a forum including, unplug everything and reinstall everything to" trying another router" (dumb idea) to have it finally just magically "connect". if i had not thrown the box away i would have taken these back last week the day i purchased them. Software to connect is also quite cumbersome, connecting to Alexa requires "Skills" to allow Alexa to connect and control. Be prepared go through the complete setup process at least 3-4 times before you are "setup". All this to turn on Christmas lights...ugh..what we go through for our wives.. :)
I think its best to delete the APP...and reinstall it...Because i couldnt get this damn thing to connect to show up inmy BLUETOOTH seeting no matter what
Weemo's setup is horrible. Their answer is try again, and again, and again....and again until it works. Now if that was just a one time hassle, it may still ok, but noooooooo. All my weemo devices don't show up in the app 80 more like 90% of the time. Keep trying to find them does not work. Imagine if it takes 20 minutes to turn your coffee machine off. Weemos are worse than paper weight....
Please try to be more clear. For example, instead of saying "this one or that one", while your hand waves around randomly... try to be more specific, such as, "the TP-Link or the Wemo". Thanks.
The point of the video is to help people make up their own mind as to which they might find more helpful for them. I dislike giving a definitive this is better out look because what works for me might not work for others.
Both support IFTTT now.

The WEMO is currently 2 for $40 at Costco (in store- not sure about online) through December 24, 2017.
Its now on sale for around $20. I'm regretting it.
There is always going to be a sale to regret. Sometimes you just need to not look back.

Ifttt can work with TP Link
You are correct it does now. However, when I filmed this it could not.

A firmware update took care of the occasional reboot, if that helps. Has been great after that.

WHo has the best scheduler? Can I schedule up to the minute?
Personal favorite is the tplink. Yes it can be adjusted to the minute.

I will have to check that out thanks for the feedback.

Just happened to leave my finger on the screen longer then I should have next to the on off button.

Just looked at IFTTT, TP-Link Kasa is now available in beta
Yes, I am happy that they added it. Just was not an option when I made the video.
Great review. Thank you for your time to make this.

Which one is more secure? Are these WiFi connections encrypted?
They are both the same, and they are not.
You don't know that.
I have many TP-Link products (2 of these mini outlets, and 5 color bulbs, 3 white bulbs) and I've fallen in love with the entire system! I also have many Amazon Echo's and Echo Dot's to control my amazing smart home devices.
Can tp link work with home kit?
Does not seem to at this time.
Does the tp-link,s robust app tell you why the fucking things wont stay connected and the Wemo does ??
GREAT JOB, SIR! It's the HS-105 for me.

+Gary Greco What type of wifi router do you have?
Cisco Linksys E2000
Very similar experience with my Archer C9 router. My Minis initially worked okay and then a firmware update killed that.
Had two wemos... spent hours to setup only to have them fail in minutes. Back to Amazon...
Is it surge protected?
It is not.
what one works with homekit haha
Wemo works natively with home kit.
TPLINK does work with IFTTT
+Steven Munoz It does now but not when I filmed this.
