  • Going to Alaska and taking a cruise has been near the top of our bucket list for a while. We are so happy our travel agent suggested Holland America. We didn't want Disney World on a ship. We wanted a comfortable way to see the beauty of Alaska and experience a cruise.
Our cruise ship, the Nieuw Amsterdam is perfect. 86,700 tons, 936 feet long, top speed of 27.5 MPH, 929 crew and a guest capacity of 2,106. On this cruise there are about 1200 guests. We love it.
Day 6 put us in Glacier Bay early in the morning. The ship got close to a few glaciers, stopped and did a 360 so everyone could see the views. A National Park ranger came onboard to explain what we were seeing.
On Day 7, we travelled to College Fjord late in the day with golden sunlight bouncing off the snow capped peaks. Laurie and I also celebrated our anniversary.
We continued to have great luck with the weather. Clear blue skies with temps in the 50s.

Enjoyed your video. May 14th is our anniversary also. We have 39 years under our belt.

Love your videos. I am going to Alaska in 2025. I am cruising solo. I can’t wait to go. One question for you. How often did you use your balcony? Is it worth the extra cost? Or would you do an inside room to save money and do better excursions or a land tour? Being a solo cruiser the room cost is times 2 for me.

I’m going in May 2025 as a solo traveler and booked a balcony. I start with the land tour and they put me on the land side of the ship for the cruise portion. This is a bucket list trip and I splurged!

For a cruise to Alaska there is scenery out the window almost every day. For my wife and I it was worth it. If we were doing a cruise across the Atlantic or some other cruise with a lot of open ocean (we will never do that) we might consider an inside room. Thanks for watching.

Which one is better in term of glaciers?

Glacier Bay probably but we enjoyed them both. And we were there in early May so there was still a LOT of snow. Thanks for watching.

Absolutely LOVED your AK cruise series! Did you all purchase the drink package and if so is it worth the cost?

Hi. Yes we bought the package but not just for the drinks. It included better wifi and I think $200 each for shore excursions. The drinks were probably a wash. Unless you are a big drinker, you can probably do better paying for your drinks. But with the package, I never hesitated to get a drink :-). My company sent us on an all inclusive trip to Mexico in 2014 and I liked being able to eat and drink and not think each time about how much money we were spending. So I liked just not thinking about it. We had already spent a bucket of money on the cruise, what is a little more?

Great video! I am going on the same Holland America cruise through the college fjords. Did the ship go deep into the college fjord? I am trying to decide if it's worth doing the 26 Glacier tour post-cruise that goes through the similar route as Holland America.

I am sure we went as deep as is allowed. We considered the same question but decided the 26 Glacier tour after we arrived in Whittier would just be a duplication. I think we made the right choice. Thanks for watching.

My husband and I enjoyed your video. If you don't mind asking what kind of camera did you use for your videos?

I used a GoPro Hero 10 and did the editing with LumaFusion on an iPad Pro. Thanks for watching.

@@OurRetirementAntics Wow.. We are so impressed with the quality of your videos. We do have a GoPro 10 and we intend to bring it. Did you do a 4K video or a 5K video and did you set it at Linear, Wide or Narrow. The GoPro is new to us. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful videos.

@@lindahodgdon9606 Thank you. I shoot at 2.7 because when I upload that to TH-cam it often uses a better compression. Other than that I would just shoot 1080. 4K videos take up a huge amount of space and are a pain to deal with. I shoot at 60 frames per second. On this trip I used linear the whole time but on my motorcycle trips I often used the next size down toward a wider angle. 2.7k also allows some room for some zooming or cropping when editing.
