Our Retirement Antics
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 พ.ค. 2006
We recently retired and are loving it. We've always loved traveling and most of our content is related to touring the USA in our 5th wheel RV or Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.
But we are also pretty big DIYers and are always doing some project around the house. So occasionally a "project" video may appear.
We also have a website at www.OurRetirementAntics.com. There you can find maps, photos, videos and detailed descriptions of many places across the USA. We have visited more than 100 Route 66 sights.
Thanks for visiting.

Cross Country Motorcycle Road Trip - You Know You Want to Do One - Let's Go !
Travel with us on the Oregon Trail and travel 7600 miles in 23 days. This is just the best scenery from several videos I made during the trip.
Give it a chance, I think you will enjoy it.
Here is a playlist of videos I made over two trips on the trail:

Helen, Georgia is a Bavarian village located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia. They have many festivals during the year but they do Christmas in a big way. Laurie and I heard about the town from a TH-camr we watch and decided at the last minute to visit. We had a great time.
Replacing Broken Springs, Shackles, MORryde Equalizer CRE3000, Disc Brake Pads on 2014 Keystone RV
มุมมอง 75หลายเดือนก่อน
During my recent walk around before a weekend camping trip, I noticed a broken spring leaf on our 2014 Keystone Toy Hauler 5th wheel RV. I had upgraded the springs years ago and still had the old springs handy so I switched it out in about an hour and enjoyed the weekend. I then ordered new springs, wet bolt shackle kit and new CRE/3000 MORryde equalizers. My disc brake pads were worn out so I ...

Mason loves exploring our "lower 40." We took the 1025R John Deere tractor and he finally got to dig a hole with the backhoe. I played with a new Insta360 X4 camera. There is a lot to learn but I think it will be a fun camera. The previous day we had gotten a couple inches of rain and Mason soon found a deep mud hole. He had a blast. Please watch to the end. It will make you want to find a mud ...

Gravel, dirt, and snow on a 920+ pound bike, plus pulling a trailer. That is truly impressive. Enjoyed seeing the sites along the Oregon trail. Thanks for taking us along with you!
Gravel and light snow is not bad. Ruts and washboard is another story. I am planning to go to Alaska this spring. The description has a playlist of the videos I did for each day on the trail with more info about the Oregon Trail sites. Thanks for watching.
Wow. Now tell me, what time of year was this? December? That snow was scary! I also thought you had the trailer for camping out...why did you bother towing that? Also, it would be a good winter project to paint the top half of it silver so it will match the bike.
This trip was in April. I take the trailer so I can change underwear everyday 😀. Actually I never thought I would tow a trailer but I Iove the thing. I have lots of toys. iPad, cameras, drone, etc. I also take a few tools. Then heated gear, jacket and several changes of clothes. And a cooler. A trailer makes that so much easier. Without a trailer you leave with every space packed. If you then buy a tee shirt there is no room for it. And everything has to be packed back in its place every day. Life is just so much easier with a trailer. And at 250 lbs loaded, it is no more weight than a large passenger. Thanks for watching.
Few things can match the experience of seeing this country on two wheels,
You can't really appreciate it, until you do it! Thanks for watching.
Wow I can't believe you are running down gravel rode's on that behemoth like it's a duel sport. 7600 miles, I bet you used a lot of fuel pulling a trailer, Gold Wings aren't known for their fuel economy.
You can't go too slow and you can't go too fast 🤣. I don't mind gravel but I hate washboard and dried ruts in the road. I got about 32 MPG. I have an oversized windshield and on the freeways I run about 5 MPH over the limit. I do better than that in the eastern part of the USA but the winds out west really cut down on the MPG. Gas is not a big expense. In my last video from this year's spring trip I break down all my expenses. Thanks for watching.
Gotta love this country. Seeing the country by motorcycle is one of the greatest things to do. You are not LOST until you run out of gas. Thanks Bobby for the posts.
Thanks for watching. I keep a spare gallon of gas in a side bag. 😂
Great video. I am thinking about getting a Insta360 X4. I use GoPro's now. What is your opinion on the Insta? Is it worth it? How hard is the editing compared to the GoPro? Thanks! Rex
I liked the quality. The latest version is really good. It was fun. But most of my videos are edited in motels at night while I am traveling. The editing is not very hard. But the X4 was another step in my editing workflow using a different editor and I just did not think I would use it enough. I sold it a few weeks ago. Thanks for watching.
@@OurRetirementAntics Thanks for the info. I use Wondershare for my video editing. Always like watching your videos. They are inspiring for me to go out and do some trips.
@@safe_rex That is very kind of you. I use LumaFusion on an iPad Pro and find it works well for me. I am planning a nearly month long trip to Alaska in May, so keep watching 😃
@@OurRetirementAntics I'll be very interested in your trip. My wife and I are taking a Alaska Cruise in the fist of August for our 20th Anniversary. I also, ride a 2008 Goldwing and am planning a trip in June to the Tale of the Dragon. I am a history buff so I have really enjoyed your video's on the Oregon Trail.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you both!
And the same to you. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Thanks!
Radial tire's guy's best ! All around no hopping smooth running.❤
Always thought it would be a kick to ride the Oregon Trail from Missouri. Where did you get your maps? Did you camp or stay in motels? great stuff thanks.
I am a bit of a computer geek. I got the GPS routes for the trail and displayed them on a Google Map. You can find them on National Parks websites. I stayed in cheap motels. I gave up camping a long time ago. 😀 Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas.
13 minutes in and you didnt show how to do anything? You should change the title to Talking about replacing these parts over and over again.
Valid point I guess. I did not want to go into detail about repacking the bearings as I have another video for that. I will add a link to that video in the description and here. th-cam.com/video/d-aPvuHWBX0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=q0jogVXmkyZceYf7 I have an entire blog post about the disc brakes and that is listed in the description. This video was really about the crappy Chinese leaf springs and how easy they are to replace. Also to reinforce that if you put more than 10k miles on your RV, you need to start thinking about your suspension. Thanks for watching.
Will be doing a 10 day cruise from Vancouver June 2025, S Excited!
Loved the video, can you tell me the length and width dimensions of the cargo box it’s self? I can’t seem to find it online. Thanks
ouch... 6 years later they are now $700. I bet they can be found used for a good deal.
❤❤❤❤🖐
What tour did you do in Skagway? Love the videos and I would just like to do your itinerary, any chance if you could help out?
We took the train ride which was great. But there was a lot of snow remaining from the winter. Thanks for watching.
We are also planning this trip. Is it really 8 hours to the park from Whittaker? By my calculations it a total of 18 hours on a train?
It took most of a day to get from Anchorage to the park. We traveled from Whittaker to Anchorage and stayed one night there. Thanks for watching.
leaf springs.... going back to horse and buggy technology...🤣
Just wanted to mention that if it has two stiff of springs a tiny pothole could send it upper foot off the pavement. You need to remove a leaf go down to one leaf and you put that center bolt it's called a tie bolt back in and shorten it by cutting it off with a hacksaw torture grinder anything. Add Thai bowl has to be there like you said to keep it centered in the plate. I'm building one with the aluminum Northern tool trailer and a Sears brand fiberglass cargo top. That's just about like yours. But with the aluminum trailer gives it a new and old and I have a lighter bike so we'll see thanks for the video!
I have not had any problems with bouncing. I only put about 15 lbs of air pressure in the tires so that helps. Send a photo of your trailer when you get it finished. Thanks for watching.
I just purchased a 2007 Aluma trailer and what is truly amazing as how much better the build quality was on the older units. I believe they used to be made in the USA and now they’re imported from China.
I'm looking forward to watching this series, but the cowboy hats in the main dining room - Geez.
Hey, those are our Saturday night "going into town" hats. 😁 Thanks for watching. We really enjoyed this cruise.
Great Video, glad you and your wife are enjoying your retirement!
Thank you for your kind comment and for watching.
What date is this?
May 2022. Thanks for watching.
I bought the northern tools version. It should have been an easy build. They wired the tail lights backwards. Tried pulling the working through the frame which was rough and sharp, this knicking the wires down to the wire. Had to replace it. They have a custom harness which take 6 wires (3 ground) and converts then to the standard 4 pin flat. I couldn't find that custom harness. Bought the standard 5 wire to 4 pin flat. Now the lights had to be grounded and the connector had to be grounded to the trailer. It took me longer to rewire the trailer than building it. Even the taillights themselves were backwards. It was a mess
Sorry to hear about your troubles, but the trailer is a real bargain I think if you are ok with a functional trailer without all the fancy paint. Thanks for watching.
My brother has traveled this country many times on a Honda Goldwing, he is currently on his 4th trip to Alaska from Pennsylvania, actually arrived in Skagway today. He will be 80 years old in August and still going strong. Goldwings are a pleasure to travel on, done many trips across this country myself. Enjoy the rides.
Wow!. I will be 65 in a few days and I hope I can ride until 75. I think I will be happy if I make that but will ride longer if possible. There is nothing like a Goldwing for traveling cross country. I have done 7 trips now and hope to do at least a dozen more. Thanks for watching.
Love your videos. I am going to Alaska in 2025. I am cruising solo. I can’t wait to go. One question for you. How often did you use your balcony? Is it worth the extra cost? Or would you do an inside room to save money and do better excursions or a land tour? Being a solo cruiser the room cost is times 2 for me.
I’m going in May 2025 as a solo traveler and booked a balcony. I start with the land tour and they put me on the land side of the ship for the cruise portion. This is a bucket list trip and I splurged!
For a cruise to Alaska there is scenery out the window almost every day. For my wife and I it was worth it. If we were doing a cruise across the Atlantic or some other cruise with a lot of open ocean (we will never do that) we might consider an inside room. Thanks for watching.
OurRetirementantAntics Thanks for an AWESOME detailed and demonstrated of packing or replacing the bearings. I purchased a used pull behind motorcycle trailer and im getting ready to check, but better replacing the bearings and seals. Thanks again for an AWESOME demonstrated detailed step by step easy to follow video. I subscribe, Liked, and following. Dj
Thank you very much. The cost for bearings and seals for these trailers are so minimal that anyone should replace/inspect/repack them for peace of mind. Thanks for your kind comments.
I rode for over 50 years and pulled a timeout camper behind my heritage soft tail since 1999. That top link setup is the sweetest idea I've ever seen. Much safer than the ball and coupler. Keep the shiny side up.
Yes, I love it. Simple, cheap and very safe. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
I want to get one of these to tow for my miata on local camping trips, would be perfect!
I don't know the tow rating for a miata but these trailers are sweet. Thanks for watching.
@@OurRetirementAntics they don’t have one, but people have been towing bigger things behind their Harley 3 wheelers forever
Id recommend removing the leafs. I have the 40"x40" trailer that i set up to haul my motocross bike. The whole thing total goes to about 400-450lbs including trailer and bike weight and it had no movement out of 2 leafs. So I removed one and now it only has the leaf with the eyelet and slipper and now the trailer doesn't bounce all over the place as I tow it. You move less weight so youd be even safer doing that I'd imagine.
I know people do that and I have thought about it. But I don't have any problem with bouncing so I just left it. Thanks for watching.
@OurRetirementAntics if no issues then yea, leaving it's the smart move... my trailer was going skyward on every expansion joint on the highway
When you mention upgrading the tires and bearings, where do you get them and do you need any special tools for the bearings, like a puller of some kind ? Thanks !
You can get tires from Northern Tool. I get the bearings from Amazon. No special tools required. I did another video where I replace and pack the bearings with grease. Check it out and thanks for watching.
there is a grease zerk on the inside of the hub so you don't have to go through all of this.
Yep I know and I use them from time to time. But every year or two I like to take the bearings out to inspect them. It is very easy and gives me peace of mind when I am thousands of miles from home. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful trip and telling us the history of the Oregon trail.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you, i watched every episode and this series made my life a bit brighter over the last few weeks.
Wow! Thanks for sharing and for watching.
Very cool ride idea!!! Thanks for sharing the adventure.
You are welcome. I enjoy doing the videos.
Thank you for taking us along on this amazing trip! What's next?
I am thinking maybe Alaska next year. Thanks for watching.
Excellent! Thx so much!!
Thanks for watching
I enjoyed the trip as always. Safe travels.
Thanks for watching.
Awesome trip that was so well documented and narrated. Seems like I was always anticipating the next one... and then it was over. I lived this trip vicariously though you. I have another year or so before I retire and then hopefully will be able to do some longer rides. I'm thankful that this past year I've was able to make trips to Florida and the Outer Banks. Thanks to your review of the Northern Tool trailer, I purchased the same one and also changed out the bearings and it pulled without an issue from Eastern, NC to Bradenton, Fl. and back. Also wanted to thank you for posting the expenses for the trip, great info. I haven't spent much time on your website, so I'll have to check it out. Get some rest. Well done.
This is about the kindest comment I have ever received. If you are like me, you will love retirement. We saved our entire careers but 3-4 years before retirement I actually worked the numbers in a HUGE spreadsheet and realized I could retire at 62. So I did and I love it. Good luck on your pending retirement and thanks for watching.
55 gallon drum, steel or plastic is a thought.
Beautifully captured landscape. I've been following since the first episode. When you get back I'd also be curious on any maintenance that had to be done to Silva or the trailer.
I covered that in the last video which I know you watched because I see you commented on that one also 😀 Thanks for watching.
Which one is better in term of glaciers?
Glacier Bay probably but we enjoyed them both. And we were there in early May so there was still a LOT of snow. Thanks for watching.
Dude! Hard core ride!! Love your videos, brother. Thanks so much for the adventure! We just love these history tracing routes and info!
The history stuff is not for everyone but I enjoy it also. Thanks for watching.
Another good video although I continually struggle with your preference for riding early in the season when conditions are risky. Independent of heated gear, motorcycle tire compounds have less traction in cold weather. I ride in the high thirties when crossing mountain passes but it is a transitory temperature change. But you do you and keep chasing those western trails with your North Carolina climate calibration.
I hate the heat. And crowds. Going in early Spring avoids both. And this is like talking religion or politics and I avoid both..... but I have a car tire on the rear so a little snow does not bother me much. Thanks for watching.
McD’s serves breakfast until 1030.
I thought so, but not this one. Strange. Thanks for watching.
Not sure if you read these comments or not, but MOST decent size airports have an F.B.O. or a pilot shop where you can get a bag of microphone wind muffs for just a couple of bucks. 👍🏻 Always enjoy your vids, cousin!
Hey cousin. I read and reply to every comment. I don't get many. 😀 I am not far from RDU. I may have to check them out. Thanks for watching.
Another great video. I enjoyed the biscuit story. Lol. Thanks for sharing.
Yep, still want to know what those people were ordering at 9:30am. They were very busy. Thanks for watching.
Makes you wonder what folks living in that area do for a living. Beautiful landscapes. I've heard to many stories about GoPro's over heating, locking up, etc., so I purchased a DJI Osmo 4 and am very happy with it. Safe travels as you continue on your trip home.
I would get the Osmo 4 tomorrow if it had a decent mic adaptor. GoPro is the only camera that has a mic adaptor that works like magic and always works well when riding the MC. Maybe the Osmo 5 will have a good mic input. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Bobby for bringing us along again. This time of year its tough with the wind snd the SNOW. Damn! Ride safe and get some tire chains for next year.
Wonder if I can get those chains from Amazon? 😜 Thanks for watching.
Drove an 18-wheeler for years back and forth from GI to Denver and beyond.....the first 3:05 minutes here, those tracks are on the East bound lane of I-80. A Rest Area. Those wagon tracks head South across the Platte from the North side of I-80.
Those were some neat ruts. Thanks for watching.
