I was friends with some of those who were decision-makers with the Cotton Bowl back when the Southwest Conference champion was automatically the home team for the game. Except for the University of Arkansas, every member of the Southwest Conference was located in Texas. SMU is in Dallas and the Cotton Bowl was its home stadium back then. Many of the rest of the SWC schools -- TCU (Fort Worth), Baylor (Waco), Texas (Austin), and Texas A&M (College Station) -- were 2.5 hours or less away from Dallas, and Houston and Rice were about 3.5 hours. Texas Tech (Lubbock) was the only Texas-based SWC member that was a little farther than an easy drive (about 5-6 hours). Add to that that the Cotton Bowl Association was intimately linked to the Southwest Conference, even sharing executive officers. Yet, the Cotton Bowl was able to attract some top notch "visiting" teams to play a high-profile January 1 game in their opponents' home territory (and, in the case of SMU, on their home field). Why? Because the organizers focused on making the Cotton Bowl a great college football bowl game that fans from across the country would look forward to watching and not on home-state partisanship. The Cotton Bowl's greatest score during its connection with the Southwest Conference came at the end of the 1969 season. During that season, Notre Dame had put the word out that it was open to ending its 45-year self-imposed absence from bowl games. Notre Dame wound up choosing the Cotton Bowl because the Cotton Bowl leadership kept up the personal touch, making several trips to South Bend in November. Notre Dame then accepted when it was highly likely (the bowl invitations went out before Thanksgiving in those days) that the Irish would face the top-ranked team in the nation on January 1. Arkansas and Texas had agreed to move their usual October matchup to December 6 in Fayetteville for what was being billed as "the Game of the Century" between the top two ranked teams on national television to end college football's centennial season (there were no conference championship games then). Texas beat Arkansas 15-14 and earned the home team designation in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns then won a terrific battle with the Irish, 21-17, on January 1 in Notre Dame's first bowl game in 45 years. But Notre Dame enjoyed its stay in Dallas and returned the next year and beat Texas in a rematch. It has to do with the proper balance. This is what was lacking with the Boise organizing committee for the 2005 bowl game.
Cotton Bowl has always been a GREAT Bowl game. You can look back and see basically since the 50’s at the great matchups and some really close games. Nice to see it host the 1vs4 game this past playoff. Excellent comment
The Idaho Vandals played all 3 of their bowl games on the Smurf turf in Boise. Boise is the biggest alumni base for the Vandals so those were close to home games for Vandal fans. Just a classier set of fans in Black and Gold.
A front of mine went to The University off Idaho whom I knew since the 5th grade. They could never beat us on the blue turf. I think the last time the Vandals beat us was at the Kibbie Dome in 1975. But that’s got another day and time. Having said that, they had success in the bowl games there, even when they were in the Sun Belt Conference.

Considering the CEO of MicronPC took great umbridge over an alleged "Empty Seats Bowl" joke, you'd think they'd understand it's not a good way to go.
Usually the "home team" in bowl games alternates every year between the conferences involved. The WAC (and later the MWC after the WAC didn't want to be in the bowl game anymore) were the "road team" in odd years and "home team" in even years.
Boise State hasn't played in another Idaho Potato Bowl because they've always qualified for a better bowl. The Potato bowl is typically a consolation bowl for lower tier qualifiers.
This video took 15 minutes to tell a story that could have been done in five minutes or less. The highlight for me was: started discussing Kiwanuka at 7:13, listing all the stats about him, then saying at 8:29 "To make a long story short". At that point it's too late. Boston College was mistreated at the banquet. That was it? No poor refereeing? They weren't forced to sleep in the lobby of the hotel because their rooms hadn't been correctly reserved? Etc. I mean, okay, that's bad, sure, but man... what a waste of my time this video was.
Thanks for the vid! To touch on a more sensitive topic: Idaho has historically not been a very racially sensitive state, and that's putting it extremely lightly. I'm not sure how much of that went into the harrassment of Kiwanuka, but it's hard not to think about factors such as these.
Idaho has the second-largest percentage of Mormons behind Utah. In the early days of their religion they openly said Blacks couldn't be members. Only when BYU faced losing its tax-exempt status (like Bob Jones University, another racist school, did), did they suddenly have a "revelation from God" and changed their views. (Just like they did with polygamy when they wanted to join the USA.)
Outside of the way BC was treated, the biggest bummer in all of this is that it wasn't called the "Humanitarian Bowl". As bad as all this was, that would have just pushed it over the top. Side comment on not real life, Boise State's blue field really did feel like a cheat code in the NCAA Football games. I HATED playing with them on the field. The only good thing, to me, was that it didn't matter if you played against or with Boise State, it was hard as shit to see the players.
Interestingly enough, just 2 years later, most of the players on this Boise State team would get to play in one of the best Bowl Games of all-time..... defeating the mighty Oklahoma Sooners! Fiesta Bowl, baby! "They hand it off to Johnson!"

I've always had a soft spot for BC (2021 refball game excluded). They beat Notre Dame to give FSU a shot to win its first national championship, they have great colors (maroon and gold is pretty close to garnet and gold), and are generally pretty pleasant fans from what I've seen. Even in 2005, making a joke about a player's name being hard to pronounce is ridiculous, especially at a banquet where the player and his team are present. That's locker room talk at best and the name sounds exactly how it's spelled, so it's not really a hard name to pronounce anyway. The fact that his grandfather was assassinated just makes it worse. I'm really happy they beat Boise State. They're a really annoying G5 team, almost as bad as UCF.

Plus they got screwed the week before at Illinois when Illinois jumped offsides on a 3rd and 4 and it was not called and Colorado had to punt where they could have run out the clock with a first down from the penalty.

So as far as I can tell BC was offended that some understandably biased Boise locals ended their remarks with "Go Broncos", and one made a pretty stupid joke about being unable to pronounce the name of a BC player...? Is that right? Yikes. Whatever it takes to motivate yourself I guess. Michael Jordan was known for taking things personally to fuel that competitive fire... And it seems like BC was looking to get their feelings hurt. Strangers mispronounce my last name without exception, but I have never done the mental gymnastics required to pretend like they're disrespecting my dead grandpa who happens to share that last name.
WOW!!! Just...wow. Talk about not getting it. Even *I* was getting outraged just hearing about the Banquet From Hell 16 years after the fact. This was not a bunch of SJWs reee-ing.
Am I the only person who was not offended by the I can't pronounce his name Joke? Is it a joke if it's probably true? If you went up to people who did not know how to say his name I'm guessing that most would mispronounce it. I don't see what's so offensive
It is offensive because they were making horrible jokes about his family on top of mispronouncing the last name. It is one thing to make a joke about mispronouncing a name and leave it at that but when you start taking jabs at the person and their family then the joke starts becoming more like an insult. If you make a joke about a person's last name being hard to pronounce and leave it at that then it is easy to laugh it off or just sit there and be quiet about it as they can accept that their name is hard to pronounce but when you start dragging the person and their entire family into the joke including a grandfather that was a public figure and got assassinated then it starts feeling like a personal attack on the person and their family and that the person giving the joke is only saying it to insult you. Also, the name is not hard to pronounce. You pronounce Kiwanuka like it is spelled. Ki (Kee) - wa (wuh) - nu (noo) - ka (kuh). Also, if you meet someone the first time and mispronounce their name then the other person usually knows that it is an honest mistake and will kindly correct you.
After everything that happened to get BC up for the game and they almost lost? Are you kidding me??? This shows that if things were 'neutral', the Broncos would have destroyed BC. I bet both team's players walked away frustrated and disappointed.

If you go to a bowl game in Idaho in December, you should not get your hopes up.

No one cares about nor respects your opinion so just do everybody a favor and shut up.
