  • @Famijoly

I was friends with some of those who were decision-makers with the Cotton Bowl back when the Southwest Conference champion was automatically the home team for the game. Except for the University of Arkansas, every member of the Southwest Conference was located in Texas. SMU is in Dallas and the Cotton Bowl was its home stadium back then. Many of the rest of the SWC schools -- TCU (Fort Worth), Baylor (Waco), Texas (Austin), and Texas A&M (College Station) -- were 2.5 hours or less away from Dallas, and Houston and Rice were about 3.5 hours. Texas Tech (Lubbock) was the only Texas-based SWC member that was a little farther than an easy drive (about 5-6 hours). Add to that that the Cotton Bowl Association was intimately linked to the Southwest Conference, even sharing executive officers. Yet, the Cotton Bowl was able to attract some top notch "visiting" teams to play a high-profile January 1 game in their opponents' home territory (and, in the case of SMU, on their home field). Why? Because the organizers focused on making the Cotton Bowl a great college football bowl game that fans from across the country would look forward to watching and not on home-state partisanship. The Cotton Bowl's greatest score during its connection with the Southwest Conference came at the end of the 1969 season. During that season, Notre Dame had put the word out that it was open to ending its 45-year self-imposed absence from bowl games. Notre Dame wound up choosing the Cotton Bowl because the Cotton Bowl leadership kept up the personal touch, making several trips to South Bend in November. Notre Dame then accepted when it was highly likely (the bowl invitations went out before Thanksgiving in those days) that the Irish would face the top-ranked team in the nation on January 1. Arkansas and Texas had agreed to move their usual October matchup to December 6 in Fayetteville for what was being billed as "the Game of the Century" between the top two ranked teams on national television to end college football's centennial season (there were no conference championship games then). Texas beat Arkansas 15-14 and earned the home team designation in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns then won a terrific battle with the Irish, 21-17, on January 1 in Notre Dame's first bowl game in 45 years. But Notre Dame enjoyed its stay in Dallas and returned the next year and beat Texas in a rematch. It has to do with the proper balance. This is what was lacking with the Boise organizing committee for the 2005 bowl game.

Even in 2005, making a joke about a player's name being hard to pronounce is ridiculous, especially at a banquet where the player and his team are present. • @lannguyen902

It is offensive because they were making horrible jokes about his family on top of mispronouncing the last name. It is one thing to make a joke about mispronouncing a name and leave it at that but when you start taking jabs at the person and their family then the joke starts becoming more like an insult. If you make a joke about a person's last name being hard to pronounce and leave it at that then it is easy to laugh it off or just sit there and be quiet about it as they can accept that their name is hard to pronounce but when you start dragging the person and their entire family into the joke including a grandfather that was a public figure and got assassinated then it starts feeling like a personal attack on the person and their family and that the person giving the joke is only saying it to insult you. Also, the name is not hard to pronounce. You pronounce Kiwanuka like it is spelled. Ki (Kee) - wa (wuh) - nu (noo) - ka (kuh).
Also, if you meet someone the first time and mispronounce their name then the other person usually knows that it is an honest mistake and will kindly correct you.

Idk I think people are too sensitive. It being a great Ugandan name doesn’t mean you can’t say it’s hard to pronounce. Announcers make jokes about names being hard to say all the time.

Wow, crying about a banquet and a joke about a name... this was really tough to watch. You won the freaking game and maybe try n be a gracious winner. Ridiculous.

Dude, the game was 17 years ago and you're the only one who remembers or cares. As a Boston College graduate (I assume because my diploma is in Latin and there wasn't a lot of Latin in Geophysics so it could be the directions to the car wash. Note: I'm being verbose to emulate your video) I can say that maybe you should not be offended so easily. As someone who has five of my wife's cousins who are BSU graduates I can say, Stop Your Whining!
The video is repetitive and verbose.

Well.Idaho is known for their racism so this is no surprise, you go to a rural white state like Idaho and you kind of expect them to be racist.

Idaho like a lot of places that like are definitely pretty bad, but the major metropolitan areas are very blue. I mean look at Utah and Salt Lake City or Tennessee with Memphis and Nashville

@@LoneCourier2281 As an Idahoan, Boise is closer to purple. Any surrounding cities in the metro are just a lighter shade of red. Moscow and I believe Hailey are blue areas if that makes you feel better.

What a bunch of snow flakes! The BC players didn’t get enough tickets to a banquet that was 2,600 miles from their campus and admittedly not many of their fans traveled to? Then somebody makes a joke about it being difficult to pronounce a players name? The banquets can be dull and yes people speak but I doubt anyone was trying to offend anyone else.
What a non story the fact is rarely is their a bowl season when violence doesn’t break out between the fan bases or teams during the festivities leading up to a least one bowl game.
Oh by the way I was at this game it was a great game. Matt Ryan played like a future NFL 1 rounder and BSU had to climb itself out of a big hole to give itself a chance but came up short in the End.
The weather was miserable, cold freezing rain and wind and a late start time for ESPN.

Ah, a classy Boise State fan, no doubt. How many other banquets have you seen people being honored being roasted without being in an actual roast?
Kiwanuka is only difficult to pronounce if you're illiterate. Nguyen is hard to pronounce without prior knowledge. Kiwanuka is pronounced exactly how it's spelled.

@@encycl07pedia- And don't forget. This is the fan base that loved Ian Johnson when he scored the winning 2-point conversion in the '07 Fiesta Bowl. And then sent him death threats when he proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend afterwards. Why? Because Johnson is African-American, and his girlfriend/fiancee/wife is white.
