  • Our animated historical documentary series on the Thirty Years' War continues with the aftermath of the battle of Jankow, as French and Swedes led by Conde and Torstensson continue to pressure the Holy Roman Empire and the Electorate of Bavaria. Although all sides were tired, the intensity of the war wasn't letting and 1645 was extremely eventful with the battles of Mergentheim, Brunn, and 2nd Nordlingen.

@@StekliCujo The Ottomans fought a long and bloody war against a Christian alliance right before the 30 years war. It was called the "long war" (1593-1606). The war, lead mainly by Austria, cost the Turks dearly and kept them in check for a while. During the 30 years war, Turkey was content with skirmishes at the edges, mainly against Poland. There was no active fighting in the Balkans. One contributing factor was the weakness of the ruling sultans at the time. Mustafa 1 (1613-23) was mad, as was Ibrahim (1640-48). Murad IV (1623-1640) lacked the means and support for a grand offensive in Europe. One reason for this was the fact that he was embroiled in a bloody war with Persia, which kept him occupied for most of his reign. The Ottoman empire was also plagued by frequent Jannisary rebellions. When new blood and more active sultans arrived after 1648, the war was over and the Ottomans missed their chance to push the Austrians back. Soon thereafter, they suffered a disastrous defeat at Vienna (1683), which initiated their slow withdrawal back to Asia. Ibrahim of the Ottoman Empire

Regarding the Siege of Brünn (Brno in Czech), there is a legend that there was an information spreading in the Swedish camp that Torstensson decided to give the siege on last shot and launch the attack from the morning to the noon. This information somehow got to the defenders of Brünn and they decided to ring the bells one hour in advance, since they normally ring at noon (12:00). From that time, all the bells in Brünn are ringing at 11:00, making it the sole city in Czech Republic doing so. Or so the legend says.

The 30 years war would make for an awesome setting for a Total War Saga game. Just way too interesting a time period to ignore. Great video as always

I agree! They can basically take the Empire roster from Warhammer, get rid of the magical units and voila, you have something close to the Thirty Years' War roster.

I have become utterly nervous over this western front. Right after battle of Rocrui I thought, aint no way HRE coming back from that defeat. So General Mercy seemed like finally good answer for French. After Conde risked and lost almost whole center I felt genuily happy that this is gonna be that last check-mate what would turn France out of Germany. But when the narrator said. "Life is chaotic and not without of irony", I knew exactly what happen next. I think this sole win would boost up confidence of Imperials that war is possible to win. Because after this sole problem would be Swedes who were already retreating. There would be no Siege of Prague if this was a win for Imperials. Damnn sole shot changed everything.

Seeing alot of comments about Conde and his antics. That reminds me about of the greatest military commanders of the 17th Century, Prince Eugene of Savoy. It'd be great to do a series on him one day as his military career spanned 30 years.
