Well about the closest thing to a guitar god to Shawn Lane (as in someone who really inspired him to explore the potential of the instrument) was Alan Holdsworth. Shawn was also a HUGE lover of Hendrix. Truth be told, Shawn was far more likely to look to people who played or composed for other instruments. Shawn didn’t really play guitar when he wasn’t playing a gig or recording and he barely ever sat down to practice on the instrument. He was a world class piano player who just happened to have an otherworldly gift for the guitar and the good fortune to have figured out the inner workings of the technical and mechanical side of the instrument very early on. At an age when most guys are picking up the guitar for the first time (15-16) he was already touring with Black Oak Arkansas and playing lines faster and cleaner than just about any other shredder of the day (DiMiola, McGlaughlin, Van Halen - the choices were a lot more limited in those days).
Then one fateful evening, he decided to go see a band live that he had never heard of, U.K. In that band was a skinny Brit by the name of Alan Holdsworth. His playing so impressed a young and impressionable Shawn that he (Shawn) pretty much walked away from touring in order to woodshed. And woodshed he did - for 2 or three years after seeing Holdsworth for the first time, Shawn’s entire waking existence was spent mastering the instrument. Fortunately for him and his social life, he was a musical genius of the absolute highest order, and he managed to master the guitar by the time he was 20. And when I say “master” I mean to learn how to execute things to such a high level of awe-inducing proficiency that literally NONE of the other so called “masters” could come close to touching what he was doing. In fact, I would argue that in all likelihood, by around 1983-84, the only person of any renown on Earth who could do things on an electric guitar that Shawn could not would have been Lenny Breau, and that’s mostly because Shawn wasn’t focusing on fingerstyle jazz. That said, I have seen video of him messing around with fingerstyle double stops at a speed that almost broke my brain. He was playing it faster than my mind could listen, if that makes any sense.
To this day, it pains me to think that arguably the most gifted mind ever to pick up an electric guitar had to endure so much physical pain for so long, and that he died so young in obscurity from complications of a disease that is effectively treated with relative ease these days. No one whose gifts benefit mankind should ever be denied fairly routine medical care because of a lack of insurance or money. I will never understand how the circles he traveled in could stand by and look the other way when it was so obvious that his health was declining so rapidly. Shawn should still be alive and making music. The really sad thing is that had the internet and social media been even one tenth as prominent just a few years earlier, there would have been a Go Fund Me campaign set up for him that would have covered the cost of the care he so desperately needed.
Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Fortunately for the rest of us, his memory lives on and his legend continues to grow.

Matthew You’re obviously in awe of the Shawnmeister, but are confusing playing notes on an instrument (either piano or guitar) at a high nps speed, with playing “music.” Shawn’s music is forgettable, disposable, like yodeling nonsense syllabication vs articulate, descriptive speech. It doesn’t communicate anything melodically or rhythmically. Its like listening to a rivet gun or blades of a fan.

@@ButterBallTheOpossum Anytime I hear someone paint Shawn into a corner as just a shredder, I direct them to one of several videos here on TH-cam. His live performance of Once Upon a Time in the West (the updated one with the improved audio) is one of the most perfect examples of absolute expressiveness on any instrument that I’ve ever heard.
The thing about Shawn’s playing… it is ALL deeply, deeply expressive. Take any of his absurdly fast stuff and slow it down and it will hit you right in “the feelz”. I think that’s why his super fast stuff always sounds SO perfect and unlike anything anyone else has done before or since on a guitar. His fast stuff (fast for Shawn, I mean) isn’t just a bunch of three notes per string scales played at warp speed. That certainly has a place in my heart, and anytime I want to hear someone shred absurdly fast stuff like that, I’ll go for Racer X era Paul Gilbert. Conversely, if I want pure, expressive guitar playing, I’ll put on some Andy Timmons.
And when I want the perfect blend of the two, there’s really only one guy who can do it, and that’s Shawn Lane.

stevedgolfer Tommy Emmanuel is world renowned. He can hear something once and play it. Has an extremely broad repertoire. Fingerstyle or pick. If he’d played a Strat or Tele, your mom would have fallen for him, and he’d be your dad, of course then, you could have gone to school.
JB’s legacy is secure. Gatton is probably the most skilled when a diversity of styles is considered, but is little known. Shawn is truly a fast guitar player, if you’re on drugs, don’t care about melody, harmonic lines, not into music, but like to hang around machine shops and listen to rivet guns, hammering sheet metal or secretaries type.

Anyway, after Lucas made that video, most of us agreed that it was just a big drama.
Also, people talking shit about this legend, must know that this is a practicing lick, which can be utilised in music. They should check his stuffs out, rather than talking shit out here. Also, every guitarists like to do some random stuffs(without drums or anything), just to interact with the audience. Even blues guitarists does that.
Those who don't, actually suck at guitar. And this sounds musical to me, rather than all the Eric Clapton wannabes, doing one note face wankery.

Not a household name but he was a terrifying guitar player. Played for Black Oak Arkansas at age 14.
Say him on a bill with Yngwie and Joey Tafolla. Shawn blew both of them out of the water. My jaw is still on the floor at that venue.
So much soul in his playing. And then he jumped on the piano and completely mind fu-ed everyone after that.
He suffered from psoriasis and arthritis and struggled with it. Sweet dude by all accounts and died way too young.

  • @jacksonlaframboise9367
    @jacksonlaframboise9367 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Lol. Theres a certain point of speed where you focus less on the mental side of shredding and more on the, “how can I prime my nervous system today so the nerves in my fingers can fire as fast as my brain sends the signals?” Nd than some days its sheer will power as a barrier. Like, you r playing sloppy nd stuff until you decide to try and it cleans up. But, its less fun. And than you get to a point where you finally fix these problems and have some introspective questioning. Where speed and technical stuff reaches a point where playing even normally fast, semi technical, palatable stuff, feels like driving a lambo on ice...in a school zone. And than you acquire adhd cuz everything is slow. So they put you on adhd meds and suddenly your only at 50% speed. And than you light your house on fire. You end up breaking the sound barrier and break windows while also struggling to keep tempo cuz reality is delayed. You than have an aneurism nd transcend out of your physical body. No longer limited by 10 fingers and logical physics. The universe collapses...somehow. Than it reforms and this guy is just chilling there waiting to teach you this new riff he’s been working on.

  • @db5837

That 3 fret stretch between the first and second finger, then also between the second finger and little finger gets the diminished scale on the first and one string with one pick and one pull off (3 notes) The 4th note on the second string with the second finger 2 frets from the first finger allows the string jump. Then the little finger on that string, 3 frets above the second finger starts the same 3 fret gap diminished scale again. It is doable. Crossing strings requires a 3 semitone interval between notes ie 2 frets for all strings except the one fret between 3rd and second string.
