    Never will there be such a gifted and well-rounded musician as Shawn Lane. So sad that he never could even reach his full potential because of fighting arthritis. Amazing that he was so fast--nobody today can match his speed--but yet wasn't as fast as HE could have been. RIP, Shawn!

    • @OperationEndGame
      @OperationEndGame 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      What makes Shawn Lane's speed so unique is the intricacy of the patterns he does... Not only he does standard 1-2-3-4 fingering patterns, he does it in odd-patterns as well (1-4-2-3, 2-3-1-4, etc..)... His finger independence at full speed is unmatched by anybody.

    • @kc8ntp
      @kc8ntp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      OperationEndGame I am a guitarist and pianist who has studied Shawn's work since many years before his death. I can play many of Shawn's techniques--both on guitar and piano--but his precision and speed are just beyond comprehension. There are tons of players that can play out-and-out faster than Shawn on guitar now, but NONE have his melodic sense and wide, intervalic arpeggios.

    • @KiraPlaysGuitar
      @KiraPlaysGuitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kc8ntp Imo you should spend less time on studying the licks, per se, and more studying great compositions, jazz, classical, music from around the world, hell Stevie Wonder, all the fusion cats etc., those shoulders on which Shawn stood upon. Through this study you apply all the technique and licks, create genuine melodies after studying great compositions, and only once you're able to sing/play truly touching melodies and movements (which will naturally include all the intervalic jumps and whatnot), then you apply all the sheer technique you have been using/honing to learn all the great music before, to push the boundaries of those very melodic/harmonic/rhythmic concepts. I'm not a huge shredder, spending more time the last few years than ever really getting my right hand down, pick slanting properly and all that. I'm still far from the crazy shredder guy, but I've been writing music since I started playing (~2005, at 12 when I got my first guitar, but played piano/guitar around the home a little before), inspired by Bach, and a lot of video game music which was inspired by jazz fusion. Hearing this stuff is almost like nostalgia, I think it is for everyone. These are melodies that feel recognisable because they come from the human spirit. I've been writing pretty much bullshit music in a bunch of genres over the years so far, nothing noteworthy, not nearly touching the ingenuity or sheer genius/technical ability of Shawn. But I think I can see how that kind of creativity and skill could manifest itself... Whether anyone will have the discipline PLUS right outlook/heart PLUS desire to play music is hard to say. Honestly though, I think we can expect to see these pure sounds return somehow. I'm 27, surely there are other, younger (or older, whatever) people, who are also connecting all the big dots in music and dedicating themselves, in one way or another, in attaining this kind of pure, human beauty.

    Just before Shawn passed away, I was asked to jam at a friend's house for his wife's birthday. I said sure and took my guitar over to his house, my friend played drums. There were a good bit of people there and many said we sounded pretty good considering we had never played together before. I was feeling pretty cocky jamming on some old Ac/DC, Aerosmith, etc. We took a break and I sat at a table with 3 women. One of these women said to me "my stepson plays guitar". So, I'm thinking she's going to ask me if I could show him a few things. Maybe give him a few pointers. She then went on to say "Maybe you've heard of him, his name his Shawn Lane". There went my cocky! I looked over at my wife and said "could you please get my guitar case, I'm done here".

    Lots of people miss the point, Shawn was a musician, being a guitar player was secondary to him, he actually loved piano the most but top priority for him was being moved by the music regardless of instrument etc. Most of today's virtuosos meanwhile are only concerned with licks and they all have the same tone, intonation, vibrato, choice of notes.

    • @shredfreak83
      @shredfreak83 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I sincerely doubt we'll see another true virtuoso a la Lane or Holdsworth in this lifetime. Even in sheer technical ability i believe only marshall harrison gets remotely close to this level, composition wise not so much though.

      @@shredfreak83 I think there’s plenty of potential for more incredible players like this, but with the internet there’s just so many players that have a great technique who get famous just for covering other peoples work and it makes it hard to see who stands out cause everyone’s doing the same thing. In shawns, Holdsworths, Gambales etc… time, they needed to be both exceptional technique wise AND in terms of composition. Whereas now people get famous on youtube just purely for having a great technique (which is fine) but then you hear them play an improvised solo or some original work and you can tell it’s no where near the level of guys like Lane or Garsed. There’s definitely some though, Matteo Mancuso for example but even then, he’s not famous for original writings, he’s famous for short solo clips on TH-cam covering playing over other peoples tracks. I really hope hes going to realise an original album soon, but I feel like that’s not really something that happens in the guitar world anymore.

      Absolutely right, he was an outstanding musician first and foremost, a rare talent, once in a generation if that. I’ve seen John McLaughlin live many times at the peak of his powers in the 80’s and 90’s and I never thought I’d see anyone get close to him but Shawn Lane did. I can’t pay him a higher compliment than that. So sad he died young.

    Tony McAlpine is the only other guy I can think of that has similar prowess on both guitar and piano. Still, I feel like Shawn easily takes him on guitar and probably takes him on piano too. I hear that Piano is actually McAlpine's first instrument, so I'm not fully aware of how awesome he is on it, but for the few pieces I have heard him play on albums. It's simply amazing to me how anybody can get this powerful on two extremely difficult instruments. R.I.P. Shawn. You were truly a musical freak of nature and by all counts, a great dude too. #&@*!!! I can't think of any superlative guitarist in the rock/prog rock/jazz vein who was as proficient on keyboards as Shawn was! I wish I had the extra 1000 hours of time I probably would need to absorb all that he left us! He did with the guitar and keys what RJD did with vocals!

    The part at 02:42 resembles exactly the Wim Merten's style in composition, this is so epic. Does anyone know if it is a part of a specific song or is it just an improvisation ? The whole improvisation is godlike !
