Only going by a tiny paper of instructions from a refurbished nes cart during the pre-internet days, you would've imagine the hours it took me checking almost every block hoping to find an opening to get power-ups. That "instructions" only mentions the controls and what power-ups does what, so it serves as a bit of a checklist. Kudos to whoever has beaten this game pre-internet days.
I started watching you a few years ago and I come back for the nostalgic feeling of classic and retro video games of my childhood! Plus I like your unbothered commentary lol.
Still one of my favorite games. I can still remember the first time I saw it too, in my parents room on the huge tv. They had no idea what to do. We rented that game so many times. My older half-brother had a bunch of notebooks with hand drawn maps and notes and collumns of passwords. I honestly kinda miss those days. We had a stack of notebooks for every game we played, all filled with little maps and notes and little journal pages that detailed where we were. It just made the whole game feel more real and alive and engaging.
I always hated wandering blindly in this game, to the point that I started and quit the game several times, but I eventually really enjoyed it when I just decided to use a map the whole time and plan out a route. I particularly liked when I figured out that you could get back to the start of the game after killing Ridley in like 10 seconds if you use the "Up + A on controller 2 kills you" trick that works in a lot of NES games. It's not super practical if you don't have an E-tank to refill with, but the one right inside of Kraid's area is great for that; you can then do the same thing after Kraid and refill using the E-tank in the ceiling to heal, avoiding the very annoying climb after you kill him and having to farm. My preferred route is basically grabbing the starting items in the loop in the first area (including the second Ice Beam), including getting Varia with a somewhat tricky bomb jump. Then I go into Norfair, head right, grab the loose missiles in the upper area (which also requires some bomb jumps but they're way easier than the Varia one), then I head down and get High Jump Boots, followed by Screw Attack. After that, I beeline to Ridley, kill him, grab his E-tank, and then go back to the start, then I go kill Kraid and then I go beat the game. I find that path both easy to remember and also fairly easy to execute; it doesn't bother with the Wave Beam because it's really not worth the trip, it still gets all but one of the E-tanks, and it has a minimal amount of wandering through very samey areas. It also grabs a decent chunk of missiles but doesn't bother with the really out of the way ones because 200 missiles or so is good enough, especially since Metroids can drop 30 missile pickups if you kill them.
I am so glad to see you review Metroid, but a B+ on an S tier game?! Haha, I guess you make good points, and I can't argue with the score. Seriously though, I have been watching your channel for years, and your narration, insight, and comedy are the best! You rock! 🤘🎸🤘
Am I the only one having trouble watching this one in 1080p? Seems to freeze around 10:16, but if I switch to 720p, it plays fine. I thought my internet was down for a minute, but it seems to be TH-cam.
Crazy u did metroid i happen to meet the wr holder, he also restores and hydro dips nes snes which i bought one. my icon is a nes which he did, learned alot about this game
Of all the times I've watched the speedruns, I never knew you had to get back the ice beam to finish the rest of the game. Those damn Metroids! Now we await your ranking of the soundtrack (but why do I get the feeling #1 isn't gonna be what I have in mind!?).
Originally it was for the Famicom Disk System. Games if that size were expensive to put on carts initially. Better carts made the FDS unnecessary quickly. The FDS did have an extra sound chip. Zelda was also and FDS game first. The FDS had a save function because the floppy dis could be rewritten. I dreamed of visiting Japan back in 1989, and it was partially because of Nintendo video games. Most of the desire was because of the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo. It would have been known as the Fairlady Z32 TT over there.
I have a feeling that you gonna eventually cover the Metroid series and if you do, are you gonna also cover the Prime games assuming that you have the proper capture card or emulator to get footage from the games.
This game was so ahead of its time. I can only think of how complicated must have been to think of all the branches leading to the rooms, back in the 80s. The soundtrack is still top notch and it caught me immediately as I got my NES, this was one of the first cartridges I have got. Mainly because my father thought the cover art was cool. I thank him so much Also kudos to you Aqua, for delivering an effective walkthrough to such a lengthy game with no map in less than 30 minutes
I've been watching your videos since late 2008 and Metroid is my favorite video game franchise. So I've been waiting for you to finally do a review of a Metroid game.^^ So thanks.
One of my absolute favorite games growing up, but never could finish it without the JUSTIN BAILEY password. Hope you do a super metroid review/walkthrough in the near future. Been a huge fan since your mega man videos.
Metroid 1 is my favorite game on the NES. I like to make a b-line for the screw attack so I always go for Norfair first. I always get the Varia suit early by doing a bomb double jump in the room before, bypassing the need for the Hi-jump boots, followed by acquiring the ice beam early in Brinstar.
One strategy that can be slightly easier if you're lucky is to get the Brinstar Ice Beam before Varia and then try and freeze the enemy in the room where you have to bomb jump. It's way easier if you get the enemy up there but actually getting him there is surprisingly difficult, so I end up bomb jumping instead most of the time.
It's like someone played both Super Mario Bros and Zelda and wondered how to effectively combine the two. And boy did they do it well! Great review and walkthrough as always Aqua, interesting to see the direct path through without the trouble of getting lost.
In the Tourian, You can actually kill the metroids by freezing them with the ice beam and then pump 5 missiles at them while they're frozen. I do it every game. Metroid's my #1 favorite NES game. Can't wait to see you do Metroid 2 on GameBoy.
It was actually released on the Famicom Disk System, it was never released on a Famicom cartridge. However, this game would be good for a request gameplay. However, I would have you do the FDS release instead of the NES release because I find the FDS release to be a little more difficult. Trust me, I did a gameplay on it!
thank you for not being how it feels like most TH-camr's talk about this game. Complain about no map. It's like "You go to an unknown planet and see if there is a map for it!!" 🤣
Surprised you didn't complain about the beeping that's heard when you are low on health like you did on your LOZ and Widget review/walkthroughs. And a fun fact, there is actually a fake Ridley in the game's coding but for some reason it was never implemented.
I hate to be Captain Obvious here: The ending is a homage/callback to Alien's Ripley. That one scene where she's in a tank top and panties. The name Ridley is a homage to Ridley Scott, the creator of the series. The whole Metroid series has been based on the dark, isolation that the Alien movies conveyed. Only lonely guys watch movies I guess? Sorry but I've been seeing a lot of youtubers parroting the same shit about how the ending to Metroid 1 was somehow just supposed to be cheesecake for gamers in the 80s. It's a fun easter egg, since most people wouldn't be able to complete the game in under 59 minutes, which is the only way you can get the space bikini ending. 1hr-3hours gets you the leotard ending, 3-5hr gets you Samus without her helmet. So the majority of people would at least get the gender reveal at the end.
It is slightly more obvious during the opening scene in "Super Metroid" that Samus Aran is a woman, since her left eye that is visible through her spacesuit has a very characteristic feminine design, and you can sort of tell that she has a feminine face. Also, her writing style feels like the kind of style that a woman would typically use, with a lot of first-person pronouns etc.

Fun fact: Ridley is named after this filmmaker called Ridley Scott.
Still one of my favorite games.

HECK YES! FINALLY! I was waiting for the old styled reviews to make a comeback. This made my day.
26:53 This was before Super Metroid, where U can actually cycle back 2 previous weapons.
Am I the only one having trouble watching this one in 1080p? Seems to freeze around 10:16, but if I switch to 720p, it plays fine. I thought my internet was down for a minute, but it seems to be TH-cam.

That was a masterpiece well done as usual

This is a long time coming
I have a feeling that you gonna eventually cover the Metroid series and if you do, are you gonna also cover the Prime games assuming that you have the proper capture card or emulator to get footage from the games.
great work again sir. glad you did one of the best NES games
This game was so ahead of its time. I can only think of how complicated must have been to think of all the branches leading to the rooms, back in the 80s. Same! This is a real treat.
This walkthrough is absolutely excellent! I now have the urge to visit Zebes again!

I think the pink door is more purple than pink.
AGR is the real deal, the real quest for reviewing everything
It's like someone played both Super Mario Bros and Zelda and wondered how to effectively combine the two. And boy did they do it well!

One of the GREATEST NES games ever made... 😎👍

Aqualung is back... again!
This game has the best soundtrack along with mega man
Fucking amazing

Keep chugging!
B+???
I DIDN'T expect that Samus is a WOMAN after playing Metroid for many years.
The pipes, the enemies, come out of look just like the Mario pipes.
Another Nintendo Icon franchise. That deserve to be review. Better late than never. Metroid is such underrated gem.

Don't like games with long passwords.😠
River City Random password is a fucking notepad lol
Yeah well there was no battery backup during that time.
