This is one of the loudest pops I've ever heard by the crowd in regards to a player winning a title/frame.... They went absolutely ballistic when Joe was just potting those last few colors in.The only other time I can compare it is the 1985 last ball final & Ronnie bringing up his 1000th century against Neil Robertson where the crowd rode that one all the way through. ... but this crowd.... awesome!!
Remember following this final at the time, and despite rankings etc Davis never at any time looked like he would win this. JJ was absolutely fearless and his potting and all round game was something to behold. Good memories.
Davis was in 8 finals in the 1980's - winning 6. He admits he is still haunted about his black ball loss to Denis Taylor in 1985, but had no problem losing to Joe - who was playing awesome snooker.
And living close to him growing up the whole family was like that and when he suddenly appeared on TV although he should've been making the area proud it was all about him. Snot faced little shit. Now he knows he isn't the greatest in the world he pretends to be everybody's best mate. But if you listen to him closely you can still hear the 'I'm better than you' in his voice.
@@bendream544 Ha - that's interesting. Ever since The World Snooker Championship came to Sheffield back in 1977 this is the biggest ever upset ever in the final no one though Joe Johnson would become World Snooker Champion in 1986 I still pinch myself when I see this
Griffiths missed an easy colour when 12/9 up against Joe in the QF. From that moment on Johnson played snooker like a man possessed. won the last 4 frames against Griffiths, thrashed Knowles with a session to spare and Steve Davis couldnt live with him in the final. one remarkable stat about Johnson is apart from the two years he reached the final he only ever won one other match at the crucible. remarkable
Joe Johnson didn't have a safety game at all in 1986, he just went for every pot going...and it worked!!! Davis himself said that Johnson was a deserving champion that year
I was not a gambler but after seeing joe beat terry griffiths and the snooker he was playing i put £5 on him to ein the title my mates thought i was crazy but their jaws dropped when he won it i think i got him at odds of 25/1
Joe was 500-1 to win and this was his only ever win in a major ranking final and only the 2nd title win in his career + he was playing the great Steve Davies And he not only won but beat him 18-12 Dennis only one on the final black of the final frame. That’s what makes it remarkable
I know there was that part in the Alex Higgins documentary where Dennis Taylor expressed disappointment at Higgins threatening him and his family and I know it's bad and all but there's always a part of me that thinks "well look on the bright side, he probably wouldn't be commentating if that happened."
Steve avis admitted the loss to Dennis Taylor in 1985 still haunts him, but he admitted he had no gripes to complain about here. Joe Johnson was potting off thr lampshades by the end, totally deserved it.
Joe Johnson was raising money for Help for Heroes at the November Handicap meeting at Doncaster Racecourse back in 2016. He was taking people on at pool. i stopped to watch for a while.
@@baggieboy1473 Being of a certain vintage, I was snuck in as a boy to the 1972 final (Spencer v Higgins). In those days, the crowd not only smoked and coughed but were free to talk and move about, all during the match. Each player was allowed to have someone in a chair next to him in his corner, Alex had his sister, Isobel. It even rained on the table but both players agreed to continue.
It was called the Embassy World Snooker Championship back then, after Embassy Cigarettes, there was also the Rothmans Grand Prix, everything back then, regarding indoor Sports, was heavily influenced by smoking and drinking, hence the coughing and sniffing.
did you see the interview that he got from Ronnie few weeks ago. he just went out and smiled and relaxed coz he won more money than he imagined in the semi final... snooker is the most skilful sport there is ....
Judging by amount of coughing Embassy did the right thing sponsoring snooker. Target audience 🎯. Lol Here after watching Joe and Ronnie reenact the last few balls so had to rewatch this.
I remember Cliff Thorburn commenting about how the partisan English audiences would suddenly have attacks of whooping cough when it was his turn at the table.
i remember watching this and was happy when joe won it. Becouse ye knew steve would win it again and again, and people forgett especialy kids at age 12 that i was back then, that these guys are playing to pay to pay there rent and have to win as much money as possible. They werent over paid footballers who were guaranteed at least 2 million over the next 3 years and just ran about a park often getting carried as a passenger as its known. And set up for life. These men here had it alot harder in terms of training at least 6 hours a day maybe every day. And if they won 20 grand that year then thats all they had to live on that year. A dont know how the players that won nothing got by? They must have did other work surely. In the 1970s and 80s alot of players would buy pubs or a snooker club, it made sense to invest what they had. Then when the money became alot better they were all millionares even if they lost, they just threw matches. And got 60 grand at least. To lose. That was in the mid 1990s wich by then i stopped watching it, when alex higgins stopped playing. To me by then every player played the same way? And thats not entertainment. Its boring. Its on my tv just now and i cant watch it.
He got his own back by winning the next three World Championships - 18-14 in a rematch with Joe Johnson in 1987,then 18-11 against Terry Griffiths in 1988 and a record margin 18-3 against an already wiped-out John Parrott in 1989.
Around 1986-1987 Joe Johnson was on fire and as good as anyone in the world. It was no fluke either. He was a top 16 player rated by his fellow professionals. To have beaten Davis in the final was an incredible achievement. To have reached the final the following year against the “nugget” was just as good a feat. When he had his potting hat on he was electric and a wonderful character too. Legend in his own way. ⚪️🔴🟡🟢🟤🔵🟣⚫️.x
i like these tables alot better too very forgiving pockets...nowadays you can only roll a ball along the cushion into the pocket at a certain speed..usually it has to be very slow...it sucks because it limits your positioning with the white ball....also acute angles have to be hit dead perfect on todays table to.
Cobblers...Joe battered him in this match, and Dennis beat him fair and square in 85....You don't win the world snooker through luck, you have to win 7 matches, and that's what Joe did here, and Dennis in 85.
The fact he made it to the final the following year and almost successfully defended the title shows this wasn't a fluke
Same with Ken Doherty.
