I was 13 years old in 1978 when Steve turned professional and I grew up watching Steve play. Steve is a brilliant snooker legend who has done so much for the game. Steve knew how to behave like a professional snooker player on and off the table. Steve's record for career tournament wins around the world is just incredible. Steve has such a funny sense of humour as well. I have seen some of his exhibition matches on TH-cam and he is so funny. I hope Steve continues to be in the studio and in the commentary box at snooker tournaments. Brilliant player, fantastic ambassador for snooker, total legend. Thank you, Steve.
The best tactician of the game I've seen. A credit to the sport and his parents. How he hasn't been knighted is beyond me. Good luck Steve, you'll be missed.

I got to play Jim Meadowcroft at Pontins once. Had a drink with him afterwards. He summed it up when he said that Davis, in the early 80s, was so dominant that everyone was scared of playing him. I don't think anyone has matched that aura since... maybe Ronnie at a stretch, or Hendry. But Davis was proper frightening.
Yeah he was like Tiger Woods was in 1999-2004, unbeatable except for maybe one rainy day a year or so. I mean all one gotta do is look at the World Championship in the 1980s, Win, Crucible Curse, Win, Win, RunnerUp, RunnerUp, Win, Win, Win - 8 finals in 9 years, winning 75% of them --> 38-3 record over 9 years, or 38-2 over 8 championships if we forget 1982.

And in fact John Virgo said in an interview that "they were all curious about this new player who didn't stay late drinking with the boys, didn't smoke or drink & no girls". I think that also won him the image of the "good son" and "family man". Doesn't time fly :"-(

And as a consequence lost his world #1 spot to Stephen. But Steve Davis is the greatest ambassador in snooker. He's definitely not the greatest like Shaun Murphy says. But when we look at all the tremendous champions since 1990. I would put Steve Davis at #20 on the all time list of greats since 1990.

He is the birth of the modern age of “clean” professionals... he may or not be “as good as...” but he was the first of a new age...

Will Hendry get the same wonderful send off when he decides to retire for good in 2025 without without another world championship title at the Crucible? It was impossible for tte same man to completely dominate in the 2000's, 2010's and now in the 2020's and also without appearing to be under too much aignificant pressure the way it was previouely in either the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's, certainly up until about 1996 anyway.
Mr Davis would never of lived with the great players after his pomp I'm afraid. I watched alot of his best championship wins and he wouldn't of been strong enough for any great player of today. I'm stating a fact. He missed more and he wouldn't of scored heavy enough either.!!
Why wouldn’t he be ? Clothes , tables , cues all better today. Young players have countless hours of material to watch and learn when practicing. Davis was a trail blazer. His cue ball control would still be top 5 today, break building would let him down now but if he was born after hendry changed the game he would have learnt that on the way through. He would be pretty much the same player as mark Selby
For someone like me who was a kid in the 1980's, when you hear "snooker" you automatically think "Steve Davis". He's a real legend of the game.
