He is a kind soul who wanted to believe that the average people were good and were worthy of being protected because the strong should defend the weak. But then he learned the corruption of some of that non curse users, mostly the politicians and the ignorant who wants to destroy what they don't understand and it became apparent with him losing his friends because of it. The two girls are defenseless and the village blamed them for the incidents happening and they couldn't understand that the curses were to blame because they can't see those ghosts. Geto was wrong for killing the villagers because he had the power to bust the girls from the cage or convince the villagers that he'll take them away but the earlier incidents made him snap and going on a killing frenzy. Geto is also having a grudge towards Gojo because Gojo is so strong that he can make everything go his way and Geto I believe is also wanting that freedom.
Also Gojo never had to pay for his power. While consumption of every curse is a mental torture. Along with your reasons and lacking any emotional support from his closest friend, Geto reached breaking point. I feel like Geto totally could've convinced Gojo to side with him, but deep down, he didn't want Gojo to be evil.
