    I have many of the “Away We Go” episodes on my channel. They’re not great quality but it’s a miracle that they exist at all.

    I’ll just add: during BR’s last endorsement with Ludwig, there are videos of him playing a smooth bronze snare; I myself saw him play one circa ‘81. Good to hear Tommy talk about his passion - he’s amazing.

      Rick! THANK YOU for the very nice words! .. and .. you are correct! Turns out that he played both, and there are pics to back that up. That was not the case back when I did the lions share of all this research though. As I'm fond of saying, NEW things come to light every day with things of this nature. Hope you are well!

      but its a brass super not bronze certainly not hand hammered if nothing else and dont get me wrong i love tommy hes been a great friend for many years but i have to question the hand hammered drum (btw i did see the stick chopper ten lug tdr) with buddy playing it its on the cover of some recent cd so that was one mystery solved notw i need to see the last two i question the hand hammered/bronze ive seen the brass on boston pops thats when i first saw that drum that was a catlog drum but didnt have a bronze drum yet and def no hammered ones yet so i HAVE to doubt it and hoping tommy can point me in the direction of even a blurry pic of br using any bronze hammered drum..i highly doubt he even had one bc ive seen buddy live and on tv fartoo many times for it to be considered even healthy lol so ok i need proof there..also the claim he used a chrome plated brass super sensitie..ive seen the chrome super in fact i had that drum in my hand at toads place in new haven ct in 1981 but it was the exact drum i had a ludalloy shell i believe those drums were not steel but aluminum chrome plated ALLUMINUM but chrome plated brass? no i have to refute that claim bc as i said ive seen the man far too many times esp in that era..that was the era i was literally hooked on that band and of course buddy himself i traveled all over the east coast within some reason i believe my limit was 350 or so miles one way never saw any of the aforementioned

      one interesting point im sure many peeps missed i almost did myself..bc buddy had ten lug choppers made for the tdr..where are ALL the other hoops that were made bc companies wouldn't tool up just to produce one or two or even ten pair of hoops..so im QUITE SURE somewhere theresa shit ton of ten lug nos stick chopper hoops out in some god forsaken warehouse..not prob Buddys warehouse but possibly slingerlands warehouse..i mean its a dream i hope im right but beyond that im hoping at some point someone finds them and start selling them..id be the first in line you can bank on that one not to mention those would be a goldmine find..

    Beautiful drum, the Ludwig bronze. But when I asked Buddy about it backstage at the Palladium in December of 1980, he was lukewarm & he shrugged it off: "Ha! It's just a f*ckin' drum - it's got two heads & a snare!" Then I added that it was the way he played it that was special. Again, he shrugged it off, lol! What a great night that was! But sure enough, not long after, he left Ludwig & got the refurbished Radio Kings, which was probably the only set he ever actually "owned" in his life, since he had always been supplied with drums by all the companies!

    Very good Podcast,Buddy and his snares is a Story by itself,what Snare Buddy played at the Berlin Concert 1984(with the rose Pullover),i saw this Concert live and got a autogramm from Buddy ,still hanging in my Drumroom.

      Thomas ... My collection/history of Buddy's snare drums are from 1949/50 to 1982. Reason for that date range was that period was the most active as far as playing different snare drums, as well as endorsements! That said though, in 1983 Buddy was given a set of restored 1940's Slingerland Radio King's .. as well as the snare drum .. by Joe MacSweeney who owned the EAMES Drum Company at the time. Buddy did not have an endorsement deal, so Joe restored that set and gave them to Buddy. Those are the drums that Buddy played 'till his passing in 1987. That snare drum from the 1984 Berlin Concert is also a 1940's era Radio King. From what I have heard, Buddy had a couple of those during this period. 😎

    Brilliant podcast!! So interesting and informative. Any thoughts on the Slingerland Radio King snares he played from 82-87? I'm kind of surprised he didn't go back to the Fibes snare at that point, as he had no endorsement to adhere to but maybe there's something I'm missing?? I guess he must have really liked those radio king snares too.

      Hello Robin! Actually 1983 to 1987, but that's splitting hairs! 😁 Your question however, is a good one! According to Buddy, and I don't have exactly where/when he said this in front of me .. but .. at this point in his career with the restored 1940's Slingerland Radio Kings, he said of the snare drum specifically: "Best snare drum I ever played!" ... which of course he also said on more than a few different occasions about a few different drums over the years! I honestly think at this point he was indeed really liking the Slingerland RK. But, that was Buddy in general! He never really raved about too many of the drums/sets he played over his incredible career ... so when he did, it was neat to hear! 😎

    Nice to hear you again, Tommy. (We communicated for some time, about 12 years ago, and I also purchased one of those 4" X 14" Slingerland drums from you, and enjoyed playing it.) So, I knew much of what you described here, but still enjoyed hearing the details. I hope you and your family are doing great. Take care!

    With all due respect, Gene Krupa was the 1st paid drum endorser. Gene and Slingerand had an exclusive deal giving him a % of the Company Gross.In addition to his other inovation tunable toms, stripped down hardware and pearl finishes. I think Buddy avoided Slingerland because Krupa was always regarded as number one. End of 1960s Genes star was fading and Buddy made his move to Slingerland. In 1973 Gene dies and Louie Belson came in behind Buddy.

    • @TheSoundsOfFrank
      @TheSoundsOfFrank 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arthor! ... indeed, and I did not know that about Gene, as my focus has always been more so on Buddy. That said though, comes as no surprise, as Gene was deserving and certainly the 1st in bringing the drums fore front! The other points made I did actually cover in the interview .. Gene being number 1 with Slingerland, and Buddy not coming aboard 'till that started reversing. I did also mention Gene's passing in 1973 which completely opened the door for Buddy being the MAIN GUY at Slingerland. THANKS for the comments and the way they were presented! There is always room for additional info and dialogue. 😎

    one questionone thing though you speak about a hammered bronze drum ive never seen him w that i did see him many times with ok possibly bronze but always thought it was a brass drum a brass super can you give me any source where its plainly obvious hes using a hammered bronze drum boston pops is a smooth finish the canada concert in i believe 82 is also smooth i just cant find one pic of him using the hammered drum any pic or source will do

  • @KenAldrich1958

    hey guys so i finally found a stick chopper tdr snare its on a buddy rich cd re release its quite clearly a tdr w stick choppers top and bottom.. i still haven seen br w any hand hammered drum smooth brass ludwigs? YES but not a ONE hand hammered or i supposs plain machine hammered but either way i cant find one pic of it..also have not found any evidence of him using s brass chrome plated ludwig..that would be very hard to spot but i honestly cannot find one and if he played drums off the rack as he said a brass super would be a special order bc its not in any catalogue much past 1959 which were actually common in that couple of year span..so if possible could you lead me to any pics with ANY of the above mention drums i listed that buddy played..one comment i wouldnt NEVER EVER buybuy a snare claimed to owned by ANYONE unless it can be very very documented it wouldnt much matter if we were speaking about 300 buck drums but guys are coming out all over the place claiming they have proof but their proof..is most times extremely weak so i wouldnt dare touch one and would advice everyone to pass on any such drum unless there is unrefutable evidence to support the claim. one comment buddy did play drums off the rack SORT OF because i know for a fact his rogers dynas didnt have tone controls..those were then specially made not merely removed those drums were NEVER drilled for mufflers.. if you see a muffler on a so called buddy owned rogers or id venture a guess any other drum but im positive of this fact when it comes to rogers dyna..you can pay that kind of money but without pure documentation i doubt youd ever see your money back id never buy one and im a buddy freak and i still wouldnt buy itto go one further..i wouldnt even believe ANY of the story they may tell you at that point id simply turn my back and say tell it to my ass..and keep walking theres a guy claiming all of these snares he "brokers" for other drummers that are claimed to have been owned by louie buddy gene..hey? it COULD BE true but no docs? no sale not beyond vintage drum collector money

    According to Bill Ludwig in his book, Buddy had his 1st. heart attack in 1960, while he was in the hospital, he was approached by Rogers and offered $10,000 to play Rogers! The 1st. incident of payola or pay to endorsee!

      Type85 … THANKS for adding that! I have that book as well .. it’s a great read! .. and completely forgot that fact. I will say that the Trixon stipend was substantially more of course! From there on … game over on no payment endorsements. Was certainly worth it for Rogers no doubt. 😎

    ok this question is for tom..tom you say buddy played a stick chopper tdr now the 4x 14 had 8 lugs my first thought was that sling just pulled the 4 by stick choppers and put them on the tdr but the tdr was a ten lug drum hes the question did they just tool up to make one very limited run of 10 lug stick choppers?? im asking these things bc ive never seen any of these things never saw him use a hammered bronze lud super never saw the ten lug stick chopper tdr can somebody show me a pic of any of these drums w buddy using it/them?

  • @KenAldrich1958
    @KenAldrich1958 ปีที่แล้ว

    the only OTHER question i have is i never knew ludwig made a brass chrome covered drum in the 80's i remember them in the 50's and 60's but 80"s i most certainly would have found one by now so was HIS super really a brass drum chrome plated?? i mean i have i guess steel or aluminum one or whatever lud aloy was i picked up his snare before the concert at toads and it wasnt any different than my drum complete w lud a loy sticker inside.. that was 81 im not clear on what exact snare he used at toads that next year but def sure of what i saw in 81 i was a total snare addict from say 80 to ..well now to be honest but those two drums the hammered drum of which i never ever saw him play and the chrome over brass 80's super?? really?
