The octane is an anti-knock rating, it has more to do with the ability of the fuel to resist detonation (pinging) at higher pressures found in high-compression engines such as boosted engines (turbo/super). Aircraft fly at altitudes and can over-boost at lower altitudes. It doesn't provide more "horsepower" or anything like that, you'd get the same amount of chemical energy burning 91 as you would 100 and >100 rated gasoline fuel.

Always put 91 to 93 in mine, but have been on a few trips where just couldn’t find high test all the time. I keep a couple small bottles of octane booster on my bike all the time. Thanks Doc.
In italy we have a very hard time finding 91 93. I put 87 E5 in as it was the only choice. Man a few hours later my 08 1200 started to have a fit. Strange stuttering vibration. I nursed it home. Now out looking for some unleaded and additive to see if I can clear that up
I have very little knowledge of fuel where you ride. I am curious. The 1200 has your country origin specs? An imported US spec bike would have a problem and need to be returned….Doc
Hey Doc, Great video, just wanting to add a-little more information about Filling up motorcycles, if your riding into a Fueling station and you see the Fuel Truck dumping a load of fuel into the tanks, you might want to going to another station if possible. Because all the settlement in those underground tank are being stir-up (take about 12 hours to settle down), so if you pump your motorcycle full of that, you'll be cleaning it out very soon there afterward (fuel filter, tank, carb(s)., injectors, and all). Depending on where you live, check the marinas out. Most around here (Western WA) sell 91-93 ethanol free because in most cases, gas sits in boats for a while.
All of the non-ethanol gas by me is the Rec 90 or 87. I’d run non-ethanol if I could find it in 91-93 octane. I’m sure the ethanol is destroying the carbs and such on my ‘05 Sportster 1200.
Pumps today are Single Hose. Try to pull up to a pump where you see a vehicle pulling away that also burns Premium Gas. Otherwise, you are likely getting a hose full of regular before the premium starts coming out.
a hose is about 2 cups , not going to hurt anything , the pump shuts off , I drain the hose into my tank I paid for it . plus got 2 cups free the last guy paid for . been doing that since they come out with self service .
I will say that aside from the advice you covered, it's also highly recommended to use E-0 if that's an option. Modern Harleys are designed to safely operate on up to E-10, but straight gas is it's best friend, and worth opening your wallet a little more for. Also, it's a good idea to add a small amount of stabilizer in the tank when winterizing the bike. It'll pay off when the bike runs the same when you pull it back out of storage. Plus, if you use something like Seafoam, not only are you stabilizing the fuel, but also cleaning the entire system, to keep it running like the day it rolled off the truck at the dealership. Costs a whole lot less than a repair bill.
I actually do that very thing. I bought a bottle of Royal Purple and put it in my bike. Because it is a 2015 Harley Fatboy, to not only keep the fuel injectors clean. Because I bought the bike used, and don't know how much the previous owner took care of using their choice of gas. I will say this' I can tell a difference in the way it rides, when I did put the additive in it, which actually made it run really good. But'VI was also told I don't need to put it in at every time I feel it up.
@@darrinleazer6784 I was talking about gas treatment. As for general fuel-ups, I would recommend you ONLY ever use premium gas. Harleys are precision engineered, so the higher octane, the better. Use non-ethanol if possible ( never seen E-0 that was less than 93 octane ), but NEVER more than E-10, and never less than 89 octane in an emergency pinch. 91 to 93 if AT ALL possible.
@@Hero_of_Legend Thank you for explaining that to me. I wasn't sure what exactly you meant, I did find out that we have actually non ethanol gas that's 93 here. It's only at a certain little country store from where I actually live. So' I definitely will be getting my gas there for now on.
A word to the wise. If you purchase from a single house dispenser, these a good chance the previous customer used regular. It takes a few gallons to blead the dispenser equipment before premium flows.
I am lucky enough to have 91octane Sunoco no alcohol unleaded fuel where I live also 94 and 96 if you want it, (I use the 91) which is also available and they have 110 leaded fuel if you need it for $9.50 a gallon, but on trips I have to burn what I can get. Always been a problem, I went to Mexico City in 1963 on a Panhead and had to rebuild the top end when I got home because there were places that had only 69 octane fuel, it did get me home but there were a lot of other problems, I had to retard the timing to make it run, the problem was there was no lead in the fuel, Harley Davidson has come along way just like everyone else, Love this video!
My dad flys and we keep a bulk tank of AV gas on the farm so when the plane is hear we can fill it . ( Bulk fuel is cheaper ). So i do run some 100 low lead AV gas in my Harley’s . And all I can say is they sure seem to run A LOT better with it . I try not to run straight AV gas though . I get premium at the gas stations and when I’m at home I top them off with 100 low lead AV gas . It burns very clean and it does not go bad when in storage over winter .
Good show. But if your ride does start to run odd then run that fuel out and get more from a good source. It may take a couple of tanks to clean it out good. If it still runs odd then you have an issue
The owners manual in the shop manual for my 2000 road king 88 in.³ says 87 or higher. It’s a lower compression engine and that’s good on 87 octane. But it runs higher octane as well. You cannot get 91 octane in every gas station, like North Dakota.
Doc, I concur. I've religiously ran premium in my '94 flhr (55,000 miles worth). But, I've always ran Marvel Mystery Oil too. I'm a firm believer in MMO for air cooled engines.
@Just J my condolences bud, the pain never goes away, I know. For the MMO, I add a shotglass every fillup. Every fillup. Doesn't do any good to go every other tank. Lucas is good stuff too, I just grew up on the mmo. My grandfather bought it by the case. Honestly, there's no way to prove or disprove it works. It may very well be snake oil. But at one time, if I remember right, it was endorsed by the FAA. My gf used it in ALL his engines, I just run it in my air cooled stuff.

The higher octane levels help prevent pre-ignition from occurring which can damage an engine over the long term. This is particularly important when running engines at higher compression ratios. Top Tier Gasoline have additives that help prevent the build of up carbon on the piston heads (carbon deposits: can also cause pre-ignition, due to both slightly reducing the chamber combustion area at TDC and thus increasing the pressure but also because of the higher specific heat capacity than aluminum pistons...this means that that more energy is stored on the piston heads (carbon deposits) than transferred to the combusted gases and expelled through the exhaust valves or transferred to the cooling fins on the piston heads.)
I live in the UK, I only put Shell V-Power fuel in my XL883N. Shell V-Power is 99 RON, I consider it to be the best fuel for my motorcycle, it gives me crisp, responsive performance.
Hi Doc. Jaime Here. I have a problem with my bike. A 2013 H.D. Heritage Softale Classic. I took it out for a ride after storing it for the winter. I started it up and let it warm up. I then went out for a ride with a full tank. After riding for ONLY 30 miles. I came back home and was able to observe that my gas gauge meter was displaying E for empty. In addition the the dash board was displaying Low Range. I looked into the tank and was able to observe that I still had 3/4 of a tank. After speaking with numerous friends, looking through TH-cam calling several H.D. Dealerships. They all stated that it may be my (SENDING UNIT GAS TANK FUEL LEVEL FLOAT SENSOR). The H.D. Dealership suggested that I bring in the bike for a diagnostic test. I wanted to know what your thoughts were on my issue. In addition, how does H.D. diagnose my issue. Do they connect my bike to a computer. Thanks
There's a lot of stations around Erie PA with 90 ethanol free. AV gas is also designed for constant rpm at altitude, so going to perform bad at sea level and the lead is not good to breath in or handle when servicing the fuel system.
Great advise Doc but hard to purchase fuel at the same location when you are traveling cross country. So recommend purchasing fuel from the same reputably gas provider. I also recommend getting a gas card from a top end gas station chain of your choice and use it for your motorcycle only. This way you have a record of the fuel purchase over the years you can refer back to. Just a tip from the road.
Lead was used to cushion the valves when they closed ,a by product of adding lead to gas was a higher octane ,aviation fuel is a low lead ,thus having a higher octane ,Doc Harley is correct use what manufacture recommends
My dyno superglider has had full service less then 500 ks ago..big ride through Adelaide hills month go.strat it up once week keep battery charged.it's running low on fuel went for splat around the block it throughout a backfire and started playing up I am using high octane fuel
I checked my fsm for my 93 fxrs and it recommends 87 or better octane. I recently removed the float bowl of my S&S Super E and it was clean as can be after 27yrs on the bike. I'm sure it would be good to use premium but it doesn't seem necessary.
What about Europe? I live in Belgium and we got 95 and 98 octane feul. Is this any good for my engine? If i go lower in octane (91 or 93) my bike starts to idle and ride differently. What about that?

Been buying rec gas 91 instead of premium 93 as it is getting closer to end of riding season. I try to keep rec gas with stabilizer in motorcycle for winter. I don't start it in the winter. What about those high altitude places that run lower octanes? When 89 is premium.
It is always a choice. If that’s the only fuel available, I personally would purchase a tuning device and have my bike professionally tuned for that octane…..Doc
I accidently put 87 in my 883, put in a bunch of oct boost, it ran as long as I was giving it gas, at a stop I had to keep revving the engine to keep it running, it took twice getting it down to half tank and filling with 93 to get it running normal again. Did it again in my Dyna, no problems and MPG jumped from 46 to 50. I still use the 93 even though 4mpg less, I think its due to the 93 being older cause most cars use 87.......I don't know of any calling for 89
Hi Doc I have a 2016 street glide with the Stage IV 110 Tire Shredder Kit. 10.5 pistons. Is it a good idea to use Octane Booster. I use the same station all the time the pump says 93. I heard some detonation and I added Octane Booster. I started with 2 oz. then went to 4 oz to a tank and it ran fine. My bike was tuned with the HD Race Tuner by an excellent Harley Tech and Dealer. Like your opinion
I have learned to use ethanol-free 91 octane in all my smaller engines (lawn mower, atv, side-by-side, lawn trimmer, etc.) otherwise the fuel gums up and I have to disassemble the carbs and clean them. Does ethanol-free gas create any problems for the Harley (mines an 2005 twin cam with fuel injection).
I would think it hard to find 91 ethanol free. Bike should run fine. Just understand the factory mapping was made with ethanol. So timing and fuel maps are not perfect….Doc

I'm sold on AV fuels, not because it's "100LL" but more because it has never had an issue, even when being stored for YEARS. If the bike sits even for a couple of years it's still gonna fire up without a problem. Emergency generators, they can sit for a few years before being needed, and fire up in seconds. My question about use in Harleys is the fuel system reaction? Being told for many years that AV can be used in anything that hasn't got cat-converters and not only not harm anything, but is less damaging to the fuel systems, what about the plastic type of Harley fuel lines? Fuel pumps? Regulators? I know the injectors are happy with AV, but I'm concerned with the in-tank stuff.
Will non ethanol regular be ok with octane booster? I'm asking because of the difference in mileage 37 vs 46 mpg. Im not talking about getting crazy with the octane booster, enough to get to the 91 - 93 range

My senior moment is impeding my memory as to the cam's i.d, think its a ' 538' which my Harley trained mechanic, David Crouch, installed replacing a set of '211' which I found, too 'lumpy' around town. Would burning 91 or 93 octane suffice for that level of modification and what can I expect, wear wise, using 95 or 98 octane, please'. The price of fuel in Oz bounces around at the fuelo's ' whim' - a term worthy of the NYT word of the day - ranges from 91 oc. about $1.97 @ litre to the premium 98oct. about @ $2.17 on any given day notwithstanding the, general, old public Holiday gouging practices. Concerned more about undue wear than performance. Thank you for all your previous advice.
Your fuel identification is far different than ours. Our owners manual highly suggests Premium fuel for Stock configuration. A Cam selection could concentrate compression in an area of RPM. A good Tune will help a lot. In our part of the World we have 89, 91 and 93. 91 is my choice. Do not choose the lowest octane…..Doc
If you need to increase octane you can still buy the real lead used in pump fuel 50yrs ago online from BILL’s corvettes,it’s the real deal & not cheap but it works great. Been using it for over 30yrs in my bbc chevelle & classic 2 stroke triple & big 4 kawasaki’s too.

I have a2015 fat Bob …is Exxon non ethanol gas ok to use ? I couldn’t find octane info on it - on my carbureted bikes I definitely use it … is it a better choice for fuel injected bikes?
@Ronin Some states "OK & TX" gas station still offer uncut gas. Pure gas as they call it. I do get better gas millage and the bike runs a little better. Will not hurt the seals, lines or change the detonation as long as you run the recommend octane range 91-93.
Wow, 2 edge sword question. First non ethanol but second low octane....I would lean towards the 91 since the factory set up the fuel maps FOR 10 % ethanol....Doc
could you do a follow up with what the ethanol based fuel does while sitting around in the tanks during down time. Here in Arkansas I try to find the highest octane nonethanol fuel available. I've heard bad stories about what ethanol fuel does to engines like boats and lawn mowers while sitting through winter. Thanks for your posts!!
Those stories are true! I had an older Murray riding mower & put ethanol gas in it. It would spit, sputter & backfire & not want to run or start to where eventually, I had to buy a brand new mower. From that day forward I put nothing but pure gas in it & not once have I had those running & starting problems. That was 18 yrs. ago. So it does ruin motors over time. I personally will avoid using it if possible.
You talked about everything gas. I’ve one more question. Is 100% real gas better than 10% ethanol in a Harley? I’ve heard real gas has a longer shelf life and does not deteriorate soft metal and rubber hoses. Go ahead and set me straight on the issue. Certainly enjoy your channel, thank you…..
Your facts are all true. Here is the side note. All current models and Twin Cams are tuned by the factory for the 10% ethanol. So for the best running you would want the fuel and ignition retuned…Doc
I don’t suggest that. Your Stock Harley-Davidson motorcycle was tuned fuel and ignition by HD knowing the content of ethanol of every pump from coast to coast. Non-ethanol fuel burn differently which would suggest a different tune……Doc

Yes! drain the old fuel out..it wont be easy if fuel injected. Also it is possible the inside fuel pump parts are bad. The ethynol stuff turns to crystals and destroys parts. I wish you well. Doc

Ride less aggressive with slow throttle opening. Be in the right gear so less stress on timing. A Tuner suggested a long distance trip might include a tune made for 87 octane. You’re not racing, you’re enjoying the ride….just some thoughts….Doc
Yeah I hear that those numbers equate to lower octane here in the states but I’m not sure. So I’m assuming 97 is about equivalent to our premium here. I could be totally wrong though.
Yeah I’ve been using ethanol free in my m8 Harley. Runs good. Doesn’t feel much different but I’ve heard it runs a lot cleaner and does leave as much or really any carbon residue on your pistons.

First it is always your choice. You already chose wisely with the non-ethanol for a bike that sits longer than 2 weeks. HD does not recommend any additive. If you choose, use sparingly. Remember instructions are for cars with big fuel tanks…..Doc
Here in Florida we have available at many stations “recreational fuel” with no ethanol at 90 octane. Your thoughts on running that 100% gasoline appreciated.

When I was on a coast to coast trip I tried every octane gas there is and it ran the same on anyone I used tried 87 all the way home and I got better gas mileage
Well' I actually have a question about this. Because where I live here in Lexington NC, we have both non ethanol and 93 octane. I was told to use the non ethanol gas because it's better for my Harley. I have a 2015 Fatboy, and I have used both. So' I guess my question is' which is better to use in my bike, non ethanol or 93 octane.

Doc, I think the "top tier" designation of fuels has to do with the amount and effectiveness of added detergents that prevent combustion chamber deposits. Octane is a discussion which you covered well. Additionally alcohol (ethanol or methanol) content is another discussion. Then lead (no longer in gas except for airplanes) content for old motorcycles is a consideration. "Top tier" can be any octane.

I'm just checking here in Australia we have 91oct 91ct with 10% ethol 95 oct and 98 oct so I normally run 95 oct in may bikes and cars so is 98oct to high to run in a 2016 street glide
I heard Harleys from 1999-2006 have a lot of issues with bad engines is it true? I want to buy used Harley as my first bike like 2003 Softail or something like that but I'm scared to get screwed and get a bike with engine problems or whatever it might be.
You're listening to the wrong people. To say ALL 1999-2006 have bad motors is wrong. Out of all the engines, yes a few might have issues but no two engines built side by side are the same. My opinion: 1999 Softtails vibrated more than I wish. First year Twin cams had cam bearing failures but by this time all have been fixed. You can ask any dealer for the history of a bike you are interested in. The early Twin Cam motors 88 and 95 ci were built strong (actually under powered ). The 96 and 103 are good. I own a 103. Do your research. Ask questions. Buy a Harley-Davidson. Thanks ~ Doc

@@Voltomess I just bought a 2004 883 sportster with a stage 1 upgrade, 28k miles. The bike runs really well and i rode 282 miles on it recently with zero problems, and i didn't actually ride it nice either. I only put on a saddleman seat and a Memphis shades detachable windshield. I could not be more happy.
We are getting ripped off from gas stations that use one hose for all grades. Thirty percent of the first gallon is whatever the last customer purchased. I seek out gas stations that have a separate hose for each grade of fuel.
A few years ago, I had a '92 Evo built up by Mid-Ohio HD. It had Branch heads, SE pushrods, SE manifold, Mikuni 45, SE air cleaner, EV-57 cam, stock displacement, I forget what the compression ration was, 9.5:1 I think.. Tuned, it was 80/80 Hp & torque. It would go from 60-90mph in a blink. The mechanic asked me about gas. I told him I always use high-test. He said you are blowing gas out the pipe. Only use 93 if your engine is over 10:1 compression. Now I'm riding a '16 Ultra Limited. I only see three grades of gas in FL: 87, 89 & 92. I gas at Shell and alternate 89 between and 92 octane so my mix is close to 91.
Doc how can you tell if u geting dedtnation have 88 s&s with aw6 cam s&s 10.2.1 piston E carb.some time i wonder if it doing it .i been run 93oct in all my car,bikes,ford truck sent i start driveing in the 80. Yes use diffence gas station.
It is tough, especially with loud pipes. I don't know the ignition you are using. I would experiment. mark where the ignition plate is now and retard the timing 2-3 degrees and ride. if the bike feels stronger and quieter, keep it or try a few degrees more with re testing...Doc

Hey Doc, I'm heading out soon around the states on my 2021 Fatbob. I was planning on carrying a few bottles of TruFuel just in case I run into an area with no premium gas or any gas at all. The Tru Fuel is sealed and hi octane so I figured it would be the best thing to carry. Would the Tru fuel be ok for my motor? And it is the grey 4 stroke type. Thank you for your time!
Harley-Davidson does not endorse any additives. Your bike is always your choice. Follow instructions carefully. Remember most store sell for the automotive world. Your tank is so much smaller and air cooled motor….Doc

Gret video, but I have to disagree with the notion that if I get my gas at the same station, I can eliminate bad gas as the problem my motorcycle may be having. That gas station may buy the gas from different suppliers depending on their cost and we as consumers, may never know. Also, if you use your bike for touring, not for commuting to work or school, you will never get gas at the same station consistently.
Last summer I did a road trip every 150 miles I fill up have a smoke go , hit a Luv truck stop and had to fill up at 100 miles did not get 20 mpg even flipped on reserve think it was water or water with 100% alcohol , had it happened at a Speedway on my way back , I try my best to get Shell , Exxon, BP, Mobil or Texaco but when you need fuel and have no idea how far you can go and find gas you have to get what you find :( I been in the Rockies and only have corner store with a fuel pump , nothing for 150 to 200 miles . Even got bad gas up there , thought it was the carb and altitude nope bad fuel 35 to 40 mph up some of the mountains
When we’re out on a long (3 to 7 days) ride, we always make a stop in some kind of rest stop just before we need to fill up to scan the navigation system for an upcoming station in a fairly upper class neighborhood which usually means they fill their luxury & higher end sports cars with PREMIUM. Usually Mobile or Exxon 93*. Has worked so far. When at home, I always go to the same mobile station just off Palm Beach Island. Always see RR’s, Bentley’s, Porsches, Ferrari’s, etc at my station.
You should have mentioned to buy non-ethanol fuel if possible, my Harley runs much better without it. This is especially important for someone who rides only occasionally. Ethanol fuel will start to break down in a matter of weeks creating major problems in the machine trying to burn it.

I get 93 octane gas with ethanol (ethanol free is not available here, and not close by) I remove the ethanol, then use octane booster to bump up the octane rating lost from removing the ethanol

Supposedly 9.3 : 1 or lower compression modern gas motors operate best at 87 octane my 96b motor stock compression is 9.2 : 1 do I have the right idea bike seems to run better and get better mileage
Please share your information. The lower the compression the possibility of using low octane. Using 93 would be a waste but at least 89 or even 90 would help keep the motor running clean and cool....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson this has been a 6 month thing that started when my buddy was wondering if there was a reason for using 93octane in his 88ci duece as hes been told by everyone to do...at first I thought he was crazy he wanted to save money so I understood it but the milage on a bike is good anyways so to me it didnt seem to be much of a concern over a few bucks every fill up at most ... then he was claiming to get better mileage and it seemed to run better w 89 ... then we were riding one day and he was talking about his mileage all happy and I noticed he was filling up with 87 ... when I asked about it he said his around town mileage went from 25 ( w 93 ) to 40 ( w 87 )and to 50 plus on the highway and he rides very aggressive high.reving the whole time... the information I'm talking about regarding compression ratios and which octane in general to use isnt on harley forums or anything like that it's what multiple engineering documents I've looked into have said ... I didnt really understand until I looked into it but lower octane gas is actually more volatile and more explosive... and once you understand that concept it makes so much sense why the lower octane gas is causing a diesel like effect in a motor that.is compressing the more explosive gas for a longer time .... unless the motor is designed specifically for 93 or 91 the compression ratio and way the harley motors run at least the 96 88 and 82 v twins ...not the Milwaukee's .. seems like it makes the most sense to use 87 from everything I've researched ... so after making sure that I could be confident it wouldnt hurt anything i tested it out with 89 and the 87 and i had pretty much the same thi g happen ... way better milage and the bike sounds a little better and runs smoother in my opinion ... and I'm saving money ... if you work at a dealership I would encourage you to test it out I was amazed myself
We have 98 octane in Western Australia and I use it all the time for my fxrd 86 and 07 ultra, I find if I'm using lesser octane I can hear the pinging and there is not enough power developed and it feel like I go through lugging until I an at a higher rev rate???? Will this hurt my engine or be of more benefit, I understand and appreciate the 91 to 93 octane in Australia is not very good for Harley
Go Day Mate. I am not familiar with the Octane composition in Australia so go with what works. You did not mention performance modifications to either the 86 or Ultra. They sound like they are on the lean side. Both tuned? Even a slight adjustment in timing can make difference.....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thank you very much for responding, The 86 was not modified but 2 into one exhaust and no baffle in the tapered turbo, and the 07 has s&s exhaust and stage 1 air element and for some reason the exhaust Sensors have been removed??? Down here in panama we have 91 and 95. Which one would you recommend for a fatbot '19? I'm always using 95 because it thought it was better for the engine.
You are between a rock and a hard place. H-D states no additives should be put in the fuel, but they also recommend 91 octane. I cannot endorse a product when there are so many out there. I do advise to figure the math. Most instructions are for auto big fuel tanks. Thanks ~ Doc
I have a 2012 Dyna Fat Bob with a stage 3 kit and i live in Australia, where the premium fuel is 98 (non-ethanol), so that"s what i put in it. I'am i doing the right thing or should i drop to the 95 or 91 ?
The octane is an anti-knock rating, it has more to do with the ability of the fuel to resist detonation (pinging) at higher pressures found in high-compression engines such as boosted engines (turbo/super). Aircraft fly at altitudes and can over-boost at lower altitudes. It doesn't provide more "horsepower" or anything like that, you'd get the same amount of chemical energy burning 91 as you would 100 and >100 rated gasoline fuel.

Always put 91 to 93 in mine, but have been on a few trips where just couldn’t find high test all the time. I keep a couple small bottles of octane booster on my bike all the time. Thanks Doc.
In italy we have a very hard time finding 91 93. I put 87 E5 in as it was the only choice. Man a few hours later my 08 1200 started to have a fit. Strange stuttering vibration. I nursed it home. Now out looking for some unleaded and additive to see if I can clear that up
I have very little knowledge of fuel where you ride. I am curious. The 1200 has your country origin specs? An imported US spec bike would have a problem and need to be returned….Doc
Hey Doc, Great video, just wanting to add a-little more information about Filling up motorcycles, if your riding into a Fueling station and you see the Fuel Truck dumping a load of fuel into the tanks, you might want to going to another station if possible. Because all the settlement in those underground tank are being stir-up (take about 12 hours to settle down), so if you pump your motorcycle full of that, you'll be cleaning it out very soon there afterward (fuel filter, tank, carb(s)., injectors, and all).

Depending on where you live, check the marinas out. Most around here (Western WA) sell 91-93 ethanol free because in most cases, gas sits in boats for a while.

All of the non-ethanol gas by me is the Rec 90 or 87. I’d run non-ethanol if I could find it in 91-93 octane. I’m sure the ethanol is destroying the carbs and such on my ‘05 Sportster 1200.
Pumps today are Single Hose. Try to pull up to a pump where you see a vehicle pulling away that also burns Premium Gas. Otherwise, you are likely getting a hose full of regular before the premium starts coming out.

a hose is about 2 cups , not going to hurt anything , the pump shuts off , I drain the hose into my tank I paid for it . plus got 2 cups free the last guy paid for . been doing that since they come out with self service .

I just started noticing that in WI, the Kwik trips have 91 octane with 100% gasoline, NO ethanol.
I will say that aside from the advice you covered, it's also highly recommended to use E-0 if that's an option. Modern Harleys are designed to safely operate on up to E-10, but straight gas is it's best friend, and worth opening your wallet a little more for.
Also, it's a good idea to add a small amount of stabilizer in the tank when winterizing the bike. It'll pay off when the bike runs the same when you pull it back out of storage. Plus, if you use something like Seafoam, not only are you stabilizing the fuel, but also cleaning the entire system, to keep it running like the day it rolled off the truck at the dealership. Costs a whole lot less than a repair bill.
I actually do that very thing. I bought a bottle of Royal Purple and put it in my bike. Because it is a 2015 Harley Fatboy, to not only keep the fuel injectors clean. Because I bought the bike used, and don't know how much the previous owner took care of using their choice of gas. I will say this' I can tell a difference in the way it rides, when I did put the additive in it, which actually made it run really good. But'VI was also told I don't need to put it in at every time I feel it up.
@@darrinleazer6784 Nah. Not necessary for every fuel up. The general rule of thumb is 1 treatment per oil change, or while winterizing.

@@darrinleazer6784 I was talking about gas treatment. As for general fuel-ups, I would recommend you ONLY ever use premium gas. Harleys are precision engineered, so the higher octane, the better. Use non-ethanol if possible ( never seen E-0 that was less than 93 octane ), but NEVER more than E-10, and never less than 89 octane in an emergency pinch. 91 to 93 if AT ALL possible.
@@Hero_of_Legend Thank you for explaining that to me. I wasn't sure what exactly you meant, I did find out that we have actually non ethanol gas that's 93 here. It's only at a certain little country store from where I actually live. So' I definitely will be getting my gas there for now on.
A word to the wise.
If you purchase from a single house dispenser, these a good chance the previous customer used regular.
It takes a few gallons to blead the dispenser equipment before premium flows.

I am lucky enough to have 91octane Sunoco no alcohol unleaded fuel where I live also 94 and 96 if you want it, (I use the 91) which is also available and they have 110 leaded fuel if you need it for $9.50 a gallon, but on trips I have to burn what I can get. Always been a problem, I went to Mexico City in 1963 on a Panhead and had to rebuild the top end when I got home because there were places that had only 69 octane fuel, it did get me home but there were a lot of other problems, I had to retard the timing to make it run, the problem was there was no lead in the fuel, Harley Davidson has come along way just like everyone else, Love this video!
Great tip doc. I get my gas at a no ethanol premium pump except when I'm on the road if I can't find one. Then I put in a gas additive.
My dad flys and we keep a bulk tank of AV gas on the farm so when the plane is hear we can fill it . ( Bulk fuel is cheaper ). So i do run some 100 low lead AV gas in my Harley’s . And all I can say is they sure seem to run A LOT better with it . I try not to run straight AV gas though . I get premium at the gas stations and when I’m at home I top them off with 100 low lead AV gas . It burns very clean and it does not go bad when in storage over winter .

Good show. But if your ride does start to run odd then run that fuel out and get more from a good source. It may take a couple of tanks to clean it out good. If it still runs odd then you have an issue

The owners manual in the shop manual for my 2000 road king 88 in.³ says 87 or higher. It’s a lower compression engine and that’s good on 87 octane. But it runs higher octane as well. You cannot get 91 octane in every gas station, like North Dakota.

Doc, I concur. I've religiously ran premium in my '94 flhr (55,000 miles worth). But, I've always ran Marvel Mystery Oil too. I'm a firm believer in MMO for air cooled engines.

For the MMO, I add a shotglass every fillup. Every fillup. Doesn't do any good to go every other tank. Lucas is good stuff too, I just grew up on the mmo. My grandfather bought it by the case.
Honestly, there's no way to prove or disprove it works. It may very well be snake oil. But at one time, if I remember right, it was endorsed by the FAA. My gf used it in ALL his engines, I just run it in my air cooled stuff.

The higher octane levels help prevent pre-ignition from occurring which can damage an engine over the long term. This is particularly important when running engines at higher compression ratios. Top Tier Gasoline have additives that help prevent the build of up carbon on the piston heads (carbon deposits: can also cause pre-ignition, due to both slightly reducing the chamber combustion area at TDC and thus increasing the pressure but also because of the higher specific heat capacity than aluminum pistons...this means that that more energy is stored on the piston heads (carbon deposits) than transferred to the combusted gases and expelled through the exhaust valves or transferred to the cooling fins on the piston heads.)
I live in the UK, I only put Shell V-Power fuel in my XL883N. Shell V-Power is 99 RON, I consider it to be the best fuel for my motorcycle, it gives me crisp, responsive performance.

I have a problem with my bike. A 2013 H.D. Heritage Softale Classic. I took it out for a ride after storing it for the winter. I started it up and let it warm up. I then went out for a ride with a full tank. After riding for ONLY 30 miles. I came back home and was able to observe that my gas gauge meter was displaying E for empty. In addition the the dash board was displaying Low Range. I looked into the tank and was able to observe that I still had 3/4 of a tank. After speaking with numerous friends, looking through TH-cam calling several H.D. Dealerships. They all stated that it may be my (SENDING UNIT GAS TANK FUEL LEVEL FLOAT SENSOR). The H.D. Dealership suggested that I bring in the bike for a diagnostic test. I wanted to know what your thoughts were on my issue. In addition, how does H.D. diagnose my issue. Do they connect my bike to a computer. Thanks
There's a lot of stations around Erie PA with 90 ethanol free. AV gas is also designed for constant rpm at altitude, so going to perform bad at sea level and the lead is not good to breath in or handle when servicing the fuel system.
Great advise Doc but hard to purchase fuel at the same location when you are traveling cross country. So recommend purchasing fuel from the same reputably gas provider. I also recommend getting a gas card from a top end gas station chain of your choice and use it for your motorcycle only. This way you have a record of the fuel purchase over the years you can refer back to. Just a tip from the road.
Lead was used to cushion the valves when they closed ,a by product of adding lead to gas was a higher octane ,aviation fuel is a low lead ,thus having a higher octane ,Doc Harley is correct use what manufacture recommends
My dyno superglider has had full service less then 500 ks ago..big ride through Adelaide hills month go.strat it up once week keep battery charged.it's running low on fuel went for splat around the block it throughout a backfire and started playing up I am using high octane fuel
I checked my fsm for my 93 fxrs and it recommends 87 or better octane. I recently removed the float bowl of my S&S Super E and it was clean as can be after 27yrs on the bike. I'm sure it would be good to use premium but it doesn't seem necessary.

Been buying rec gas 91 instead of premium 93 as it is getting closer to end of riding season. I try to keep rec gas with stabilizer in motorcycle for winter. I don't start it in the winter. What about those high altitude places that run lower octanes? When 89 is premium.
It is always a choice. If that’s the only fuel available, I personally would purchase a tuning device and have my bike professionally tuned for that octane…..Doc

I accidently put 87 in my 883, put in a bunch of oct boost, it ran as long as I was giving it gas, at a stop I had to keep revving the engine to keep it running, it took twice getting it down to half tank and filling with 93 to get it running normal again.
Did it again in my Dyna, no problems and MPG jumped from 46 to 50. I still use the 93 even though 4mpg less, I think its due to the 93 being older cause most cars use 87.......I don't know of any calling for 89
Hi Doc I have a 2016 street glide with the Stage IV 110 Tire Shredder Kit. 10.5 pistons. Is it a good idea to use Octane Booster. I use the same station all the time the pump says 93. I heard some detonation and I added Octane Booster. I started with 2 oz. then went to 4 oz to a tank and it ran fine. My bike was tuned with the HD Race Tuner by an excellent Harley Tech and Dealer. Like your opinion
I have learned to use ethanol-free 91 octane in all my smaller engines (lawn mower, atv, side-by-side, lawn trimmer, etc.) otherwise the fuel gums up and I have to disassemble the carbs and clean them. Does ethanol-free gas create any problems for the Harley (mines an 2005 twin cam with fuel injection).
I would think it hard to find 91 ethanol free. Bike should run fine. Just understand the factory mapping was made with ethanol. So timing and fuel maps are not perfect….Doc

I'm sold on AV fuels, not because it's "100LL" but more because it has never had an issue, even when being stored for YEARS. If the bike sits even for a couple of years it's still gonna fire up without a problem. Emergency generators, they can sit for a few years before being needed, and fire up in seconds. My question about use in Harleys is the fuel system reaction? Being told for many years that AV can be used in anything that hasn't got cat-converters and not only not harm anything, but is less damaging to the fuel systems, what about the plastic type of Harley fuel lines? Fuel pumps? Regulators? I know the injectors are happy with AV, but I'm concerned with the in-tank stuff.
Will non ethanol regular be ok with octane booster? I'm asking because of the difference in mileage 37 vs 46 mpg. Im not talking about getting crazy with the octane booster, enough to get to the 91 - 93 range

Concerning fuel, could you enlighten me about a 2012 Fatbob with a mild cam. My senior moment is impeding my memory as to the cam's i.d, think its a ' 538' which my Harley trained mechanic, David Crouch, installed replacing a set of '211' which I found, too 'lumpy' around town. Would burning 91 or 93 octane suffice for that level of modification and what can I expect, wear wise, using 95 or 98 octane, please'.
The price of fuel in Oz bounces around at the fuelo's ' whim' - a term worthy of the NYT word of the day - ranges from 91 oc. about $1.97 @ litre to the premium 98oct. about @ $2.17 on any given day notwithstanding the, general, old public Holiday gouging practices.
Concerned more about undue wear than performance.

Your fuel identification is far different than ours. Our owners manual highly suggests Premium fuel for Stock configuration. A Cam selection could concentrate compression in an area of RPM. A good Tune will help a lot. In our part of the World we have 89, 91 and 93. 91 is my choice. Do not choose the lowest octane…..Doc

If you need to increase octane you can still buy the real lead used in pump fuel 50yrs ago online from BILL’s corvettes,it’s the real deal & not cheap but it works great.

@Ronin Some states "OK & TX" gas station still offer uncut gas. Pure gas as they call it. I do get better gas millage and the bike runs a little better. Will not hurt the seals, lines or change the detonation as long as you run the recommend octane range 91-93.

I had an older Murray riding mower & put ethanol gas in it. It would spit, sputter & backfire & not want to run or start to where eventually, I had to buy a brand new mower. From that day forward I put nothing but pure gas in it & not once have I had those running & starting problems. That was 18 yrs. ago. So it does ruin motors over time. I personally will avoid using it if possible.
You talked about everything gas. I’ve one more question. Is 100% real gas better than 10% ethanol in a Harley? I’ve heard real gas has a longer shelf life and does not deteriorate soft metal and rubber hoses. Go ahead and set me straight on the issue. Certainly enjoy your channel, thank you…..
Your facts are all true. Here is the side note. All current models and Twin Cams are tuned by the factory for the 10% ethanol. So for the best running you would want the fuel and ignition retuned…Doc

I don’t suggest that. Your Stock Harley-Davidson motorcycle was tuned fuel and ignition by HD knowing the content of ethanol of every pump from coast to coast. Non-ethanol fuel burn differently which would suggest a different tune……Doc

My '10 V-rod VRSCAW is stock. Runs best on no alcohol.

Yes! drain the old fuel out..it wont be easy if fuel injected. Also it is possible the inside fuel pump parts are bad. The ethynol stuff turns to crystals and destroys parts. I wish you well. Doc

I guess he just put it in with the existing fuel. I pray it didnt ruin the engine. We rode it all day and it Rose fine. Thank you for your help. Do you think he harmed the engime?!

What is your recommendation for travel into areas where 91-93 are not available?
Ride less aggressive with slow throttle opening. Be in the right gear so less stress on timing. A Tuner suggested a long distance trip might include a tune made for 87 octane. You’re not racing, you’re enjoying the ride….just some thoughts….Doc

Yeah I hear that those numbers equate to lower octane here in the states but I’m not sure. So I’m assuming 97 is about equivalent to our premium here. I could be totally wrong though.

Yeah I’ve been using ethanol free in my m8 Harley. Runs good. Doesn’t feel much different but I’ve heard it runs a lot cleaner and does leave as much or really any carbon residue on your pistons.

First it is always your choice. You already chose wisely with the non-ethanol for a bike that sits longer than 2 weeks. HD does not recommend any additive. If you choose, use sparingly. Remember instructions are for cars with big fuel tanks…..Doc
Here in Florida we have available at many stations “recreational fuel” with no ethanol at 90 octane. Your thoughts on running that 100% gasoline appreciated.

If you want to run that gas you can but you must only use that gas. You can’t switch back and forth between pure and not.

@@steveh4564 i have the same , an EVO engine..use 89 or 90 ethanol free you'll never have carb or tank issues , plus manual states to use 87 or higher..you'll be ok with that octane

When I was on a coast to coast trip I tried every octane gas there is and it ran the same on anyone I used tried 87 all the way home and I got better gas mileage

Well' I actually have a question about this. Because where I live here in Lexington NC, we have both non ethanol and 93 octane. I was told to use the non ethanol gas because it's better for my Harley. I have a 2015 Fatboy, and I have used both. So' I guess my question is' which is better to use in my bike, non ethanol or 93 octane.
The manufacturer recommends the 93. I do endorse non ethanol when storing….Doc

And I actually ride in the winter time, as long as it's not raining or snowing here. And since we don't live to far apart, you definitely should know how the weather is like, both here and down there in SC.
Doc, I think the "top tier" designation of fuels has to do with the amount and effectiveness of added detergents that prevent combustion chamber deposits. Octane is a discussion which you covered well. Additionally alcohol (ethanol or methanol) content is another discussion. Then lead (no longer in gas except for airplanes) content for old motorcycles is a consideration. "Top tier" can be any octane.

I'm just checking here in Australia we have 91oct 91ct with 10% ethol 95 oct and 98 oct so I normally run 95 oct in may bikes and cars so is 98oct to high to run in a 2016 street glide

I heard Harleys from 1999-2006 have a lot of issues with bad engines is it true? I want to buy used Harley as my first bike like 2003 Softail or something like that but I'm scared to get screwed and get a bike with engine problems or whatever it might be.
You're listening to the wrong people. To say ALL 1999-2006 have bad motors is wrong. Out of all the engines, yes a few might have issues but no two engines built side by side are the same. My opinion: 1999 Softtails vibrated more than I wish. First year Twin cams had cam bearing failures but by this time all have been fixed. You can ask any dealer for the history of a bike you are interested in. The early Twin Cam motors 88 and 95 ci were built strong (actually under powered ). The 96 and 103 are good. I own a 103. Do your research. Ask questions. Buy a Harley-Davidson. Thanks ~ Doc

@@Voltomess I just bought a 2004 883 sportster with a stage 1 upgrade, 28k miles. The bike runs really well and i rode 282 miles on it recently with zero problems, and i didn't actually ride it nice either. I only put on a saddleman seat and a Memphis shades detachable windshield. I could not be more happy.

We are getting ripped off from gas stations that use one hose for all grades.
Thirty percent of the first gallon is whatever the last customer purchased.
I seek out gas stations that have a separate hose for each grade of fuel.
On my second bike (XL1200S), fuel without ethanol, I got 15 more miles per a tank of gas.
A few years ago, I had a '92 Evo built up by Mid-Ohio HD. It had Branch heads, SE pushrods, SE manifold, Mikuni 45, SE air cleaner, EV-57 cam, stock displacement, I forget what the compression ration was, 9.5:1 I think.. Tuned, it was 80/80 Hp & torque. It would go from 60-90mph in a blink. The mechanic asked me about gas. I told him I always use high-test. He said you are blowing gas out the pipe. Only use 93 if your engine is over 10:1 compression. Now I'm riding a '16 Ultra Limited. I only see three grades of gas in FL: 87, 89 & 92. I gas at Shell and alternate 89 between and 92 octane so my mix is close to 91.

It is tough, especially with loud pipes. I don't know the ignition you are using. I would experiment. mark where the ignition plate is now and retard the timing 2-3 degrees and ride. if the bike feels stronger and quieter, keep it or try a few degrees more with re testing...Doc

Hey Doc, I'm heading out soon around the states on my 2021 Fatbob. I was planning on carrying a few bottles of TruFuel just in case I run into an area with no premium gas or any gas at all. The Tru Fuel is sealed and hi octane so I figured it would be the best thing to carry. Would the Tru fuel be ok for my motor? And it is the grey 4 stroke type. Thank you for your time!
Harley-Davidson does not endorse any additives. Your bike is always your choice. Follow instructions carefully. Remember most store sell for the automotive world. Your tank is so much smaller and air cooled motor….Doc

Have some head work done on your engine buy someone who knows what they're doing.
Gret video, but I have to disagree with the notion that if I get my gas at the same station, I can eliminate bad gas as the problem my motorcycle may be having. That gas station may buy the gas from different suppliers depending on their cost and we as consumers, may never know. Also, if you use your bike for touring, not for commuting to work or school, you will never get gas at the same station consistently.
Last summer I did a road trip every 150 miles I fill up have a smoke go , hit a Luv truck stop and had to fill up at 100 miles did not get 20 mpg even flipped on reserve think it was water or water with 100% alcohol , had it happened at a Speedway on my way back , I try my best to get Shell , Exxon, BP, Mobil or Texaco but when you need fuel and have no idea how far you can go and find gas you have to get what you find :( I been in the Rockies and only have corner store with a fuel pump , nothing for 150 to 200 miles . Even got bad gas up there , thought it was the carb and altitude nope bad fuel 35 to 40 mph up some of the mountains
When we’re out on a long (3 to 7 days) ride, we always make a stop in some kind of rest stop just before we need to fill up to scan the navigation system for an upcoming station in a fairly upper class neighborhood which usually means they fill their luxury & higher end sports cars with PREMIUM. Usually Mobile or Exxon 93*. Has worked so far.
When at home, I always go to the same mobile station just off Palm Beach Island. Always see RR’s, Bentley’s, Porsches, Ferrari’s, etc at my station.

Good info Doc. The gas station I use is offering a 94 octane, in Pennsylvania. OK to use or not? ride a 2017 Road King , stock.

You should have mentioned to buy non-ethanol fuel if possible, my Harley runs much better without it. This is especially important for someone who rides only occasionally. Ethanol fuel will start to break down in a matter of weeks creating major problems in the machine trying to burn it.
I actually heard the exact same thing. I try to put 90 non ethanol in it all the time. But' I also do do a lot of riding to. So' I was also told that it's ok to, as long as I ride it more when I do, because of the way the 93 can do
I get 93 octane gas with ethanol (ethanol free is not available here, and not close by)
I remove the ethanol, then use octane booster to bump up the octane rating lost from removing the ethanol
Wish I could find good fuel here in Northern Nevada. Ours is crap that comes out of CA. Can get no ethanol gas but only 87 octane

I have no idea what 93 is. Here in Australia we have 91, 91E10(10%ethanol), 95 and 98. I’ve been told by my dealership to use 98 only. 2012 stage 2 fat bob

Supposedly 9.3 : 1 or lower compression modern gas motors operate best at 87 octane my 96b motor stock compression is 9.2 : 1 do I have the right idea bike seems to run better and get better mileage
Please share your information. The lower the compression the possibility of using low octane. Using 93 would be a waste but at least 89 or even 90 would help keep the motor running clean and cool....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson this has been a 6 month thing that started when my buddy was wondering if there was a reason for using 93octane in his 88ci duece as hes been told by everyone to do...at first I thought he was crazy he wanted to save money so I understood it but the milage on a bike is good anyways so to me it didnt seem to be much of a concern over a few bucks every fill up at most ... then he was claiming to get better mileage and it seemed to run better w 89 ... then we were riding one day and he was talking about his mileage all happy and I noticed he was filling up with 87 ... when I asked about it he said his around town mileage went from 25 ( w 93 ) to 40 ( w 87 )and to 50 plus on the highway and he rides very aggressive high.reving the whole time... the information I'm talking about regarding compression ratios and which octane in general to use isnt on harley forums or anything like that it's what multiple engineering documents I've looked into have said ... I didnt really understand until I looked into it but lower octane gas is actually more volatile and more explosive... and once you understand that concept it makes so much sense why the lower octane gas is causing a diesel like effect in a motor that.is compressing the more explosive gas for a longer time .... unless the motor is designed specifically for 93 or 91 the compression ratio and way the harley motors run at least the 96 88 and 82 v twins ...not the Milwaukee's .. seems like it makes the most sense to use 87 from everything I've researched ... so after making sure that I could be confident it wouldnt hurt anything i tested it out with 89 and the 87 and i had pretty much the same thi g happen ... way better milage and the bike sounds a little better and runs smoother in my opinion ... and I'm saving money ... if you work at a dealership I would encourage you to test it out I was amazed myself
In much of the West, there are Maverick stations. Ethanol Free 91-93 octane. That’s what I’m talkin about.
We have 98 octane in Western Australia and I use it all the time for my fxrd 86 and 07 ultra, I find if I'm using lesser octane I can hear the pinging and there is not enough power developed and it feel like I go through lugging until I an at a higher rev rate???? Will this hurt my engine or be of more benefit, I understand and appreciate the 91 to 93 octane in Australia is not very good for Harley
Go Day Mate. I am not familiar with the Octane composition in Australia so go with what works. You did not mention performance modifications to either the 86 or Ultra. They sound like they are on the lean side. Both tuned? Even a slight adjustment in timing can make difference.....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thank you very much for responding, The 86 was not modified but 2 into one exhaust and no baffle in the tapered turbo, and the 07 has s&s exhaust and stage 1 air element and for some reason the exhaust Sensors have been removed??? I have only acquired the bike recently 2 weeks,

You are between a rock and a hard place. H-D states no additives should be put in the fuel, but they also recommend 91 octane. I cannot endorse a product when there are so many out there. I do advise to figure the math. Most instructions are for auto big fuel tanks. Thanks ~ Doc

Good information! In my old shovelhead I add a little dose of additive every 2 stops. Here in France we have mostly 95 and 98 octane. 98 is the best!
