  • Awesome day on the water! I took on 13kt winds and constant light rain to catch an early season lingcod.

Thanks! It was a LONG winter. Managed to get out there for some perch but nothing too exciting. Feels good to be back in the thick of it!

Good catch! You should come on up to Vancouver island sometime and fish here!

Nice! Out in ma 4? I’m not aware of it being open in the sound this season.

@@kayakfishingpnw I’m at the northern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Just got back and caught a whole bunch of rock crab pretty much every species of them and one sole but no lincod. Had three strikes while trolling from probably pink salmon as well.

Great job! What pound test are you using for your leader? Always wonder what would be safe in a kayak if you got hung up.

Thanks!!! Good question. I was using 50 lb braid to 30 lb fluorocarbon using a uni to uni knot. Super heavy for the size of the fish, but I snag off much less with that horsepower.

@@kayakfishingpnw Thanks! I have been running 80lb braid to a snap swivel and then a short section of 30lb mono leader to my terminal tackle, but that's from a boat and was debating what would be safe from a kayak as it can be a challenge to break off the 30lb mono when snagged even from the boat. Sounds like 30 might be ok though. AND you never know when you might hook one of the oversized behemoths that require that heavier leader!

@@bentrod4255 good to see you out there the other day! From what I understand, your setup is actually a little more kayak-friendly than mine. 50# braid can bind into itself if you get a big fish and that can either yank the rod out your hand or pull you in. 80# is less likely. I've been considering upgrading. Good luck!

@@kayakfishingpnw likewise! I learned that day that my 30lb big game mono is a bit strong as I really had a hard time breaking it off once my jig was securely fastened to something on the bottom. I’m glad the conditions were not worse as it could have created a nasty situation. I’ve since downsized to 25 lb leader.
