That look on her face (.27) at the beginning! Hahaha. Lex isn't sure what to make of it. I love her reactions. But this is BY FAR one of their best songs. This song has so many surprises, breaks, it's completely unpredictable; it injects you with so much energy and you really have no choice but to let it take over. The guitar solos are mad, crazy all over the fret board... just perfection, in my opinion, of what a metal song should sound like. Rob and crew were unstoppable during this period of their career.

I knew you'd come around, Lex. Judas Priest are Metal Gods. There probably wouldn't be a Slayer without Priest. I've been listening to them since their 70s stuff (still my favorite Priest era, the Victim of Changes era). I bought this album on vinyl when it came out, then went to see them in concert when they toured to support it. Great White opened for them. Think it was about 1984.
It was a LOUD concert. One of my friends who came with had just went to the doc that day to have her ears unplugged after years of not hearing well, and that was a big mistake. 🙉 She couldn't wait to leave, and was out of there before the encore. The rest of us almost left but then we heard the Harley Davidson fire up and stayed. 🙂

Every time I hear this song, I still picture the two of them side by side playing and moving in sync. It was a cool thing to see. Hard to believe I was in 8th grade when this album came out!
EDITED: Also not to horn in on Judas Priest, but if you like the whole classical music and metal thing, you can check out some compositions of that some of the metal guitarists have done and played along with symphony orchestras. Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, and Dave Mustaine have all done performances like this and they are amazing.

I totally love Judas Priest! They and Scorpions are my all time favorites who are still around jamming from that late 60's early 70' time period.
Lex when you say "Heavy Orchestra" I'll bet that you would like the Metallica S&M album!

After Painiiller, this was probably the second or third Judas Priest song I ever heard and I still love it :D
What Lexi was saying about orchestral metal, that does totally exist. Nearly all symphonic bands use orchestral sounds in their tracks. Bands like Nightwish, Dimmu Borgir and Ayreon use this quite frequently. Metallica also performed live with the San Francisco Symphony, just check out the S&M concert. If you liked the original Master of Puppets, this version will surely bring your house down :D

Alice Cooper has small events at his youth community center in Phoenix. The center provides free lessons in art, music & production. Students who excel are rewarded with the opportunity to play along side big name talent. A few years back, pre-COVID, my niece's boyfriend at the time was one of those students. He got to play an event with Rob Halford. First, Rob's voice is as strong as it has ever been. But even more notable was the way he interacted with the kids rotating thru the set on various intruments. He encouraged them to get up front & rock the fxxk out as if they'd been jamming with him his entire career. Afterward, he did a meet & greet, pics, autographs, etc specifically for the kids. Someone of Halford's status doesn't need to participate in such events. The fact that he did with such vigor & encouragement is one of many reasons he is THE Metal God.

There are so many crossovers of metal with classical, baroque, opera and symphonic music. Here are a few samplers of the directions this has gone to:
Savatage - This is the Time, This isn't What We Meant, Chance, Morphine Child and my personal favourite of their phase that eventually evolved into Trans-Siberian Orchestra: Not What You See.
Therion - The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah Live in Poland 1998 (For a more gothic vibe with operatic vocals).
Rhapsody - Emerald Sword (Gourmet Italian cheese with orchestral overkill).
Rhapsody - The Dark Tower of the Abyss (Shamelessly ripping off Vivaldi and it's glorious).
Stratovarius - Black Diamond (Essential European power metal megahit).
Vinnie Moore - April Sky (Instrumental cover of Largo from J.S. Bach's Concerto No.5 in F minor. Pure joy).
Yngwie Malmsteen - Far Beyond the Sun Live in Leningrad 1989 or Fugue live with the New Japan Philharmonic or really half of everything he ever did. He's THE neoclassical metal guitarist and influenced entire subgenres of melodic metal. Also he did Aerosmith's Dream On with Dio and it's just beautiful.
Devin Townsend - Why? (No guitars here, just arguably the most impressive vocalist of modern metal doing his thing with a big orchestra and choirs).
Btw love your channel and how you catch on to elements even some lifelong rock/metal listeners don't seem to notice :)

Tipton and, Downing are beasts and, I believe underrated. Also, don’t know if you already have but, I think you should react to Sisters of Mercy “Lucretia my Reflection”. I think you would dig it.
