    I always enjoy Adam's content, his positivity and Slavic charm warm my black soul. Jakub has always felt like a natural addition, a knife throwing master visits a sword master is a beautiful background theme to a pair of geek scientists "playing around" with the skills they have trained. I love Japan, consider myself a student of many aspects of its culture, and had an instant liking for Sensei Zeman. He strikes me as a newish master who hopes to mature into a grandmaster, a life I have no doubt he will live beyond his body as so many traditions before. I thank both men who appear in front of the camera, and those who supports them behind it. This collaboration always gets better...

    Good test and good work
    I don't think the soldier wearing the helmet would be seriously injuried, even from the second cut: a good padding would assorb most of the force. Way more dangerous would be the force impressed on the neck.
    You could put a scale under the helmet and measure the force of the hit!

      To Gabriele Alfredo Pini : "I totally agree with what you say: I don't think the sword-strokeswould have caused much damage, the energy would have been absorbed by the padding and also by the spine (the intervertebral pads) which, unlike the support on which the helmet was resting, isn't rigid; moreover the position (from top to bottom) with which the strokes were dealt is the best (to produce damage to the armor), but I think it is not widespread in reality except in the case of a fighter on horseback and one on foot."

    The silk scarf test is from an old legend about how sharp swords could be. The legend I recall hearing was that it was an exchange between a European knight and a Saracen. the European knight in order to prove how sharp his sword was dropped a silk kerchief over the blade and it fell neatly in two. Not to be outdone the Saracen placed his Shamshir in a stream with the blade facing up stream and had someone place a tuft of cotton (some re-tellings say is was a tuft of lint, others say fur) in the stream and is it floated downstream it was cut in two by the edge of the Saracen's Shamshir. Whether the event ever actually took place has been a long standing debate in historical circles for a very long time, but it is a good story and many people have, over the years tried to replicate those feats.

    Great introduction and explanation of the helmet's properties! It's true that only low-quality helmets of lowly footsoldiers or ashigaru could be cut in this way. Otherwise, japanese warriors abode by the same principles as everybody else: Aim for the gaps in the (high-quality) armor!

      It needs to be tested against the equivalent of a taller opponent, in fast movement, with a weapon poised for code 187. It would of course have to be done on the run, with no time to charge up and aim as if cutting wood. The helmet should also be wet/slippery, in case it was raining or something.

    That is a battlefield technique in warring states period called Helm Splitter. (Don't ask me the proper name)
    The point is actually not to split the helmet despite the name. But to deliver enough shock to shatter the skull.
    It required very strong arm. And not uncommon to break one after you execute it.
    But it doesn't matter since the enemy will be dead anyway.
    Just pray that the sword won't break first.
    Note: it is more economical to fight armored opponents using wooden sticks.

  • @adifferentangle7064
    @adifferentangle7064 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    FYI the actual silk cutting test involves having the blade angled toward the ground, placing the silk cloth at the top and letting the silk run down the blade.
    if your blade is sharpened to 20,000 grit it should slice the silk.

  • @ronin3766
    @ronin3766 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder two things (hoping someone who knows more than me could give any answer):
    1)why when he cuts does he bring the sword all the way back, instead of leaving it parallel with the ground?
    I mean, It's taught (when charging a cut) not to bring the sword under the parallel line, right?
    2)Why he is using katana like an axe? I mean, isn't he supposed to "cut" with the sword (sliding the blade over the target) instead of smashing it all the way down?

  • @themodernmusketeer877

    So this would work as long as the soldier just stood there and let you hit him right on the top of the head without trying to move out of the way like any normal human being would. Otherwise the helmet would deflect the blow just like it’s designed to

    • @IronMikeyT

    • @Struggler_5
      @Struggler_5 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If someone manages to land a hit then the helmet guy would get a concussion and the helmet also won't bounce away like in this video and if that strike manages to cut in then the skull would absorb the impact and if the cut is deeper then the sword could also get stuck or lodged in the skull. If someone then keeps applying force on the sword then the helmet guy is fucked and he's gonna get cut in half

    Did you see that?
    Did you see how the sword caught on the fabric?
    That's why soldiers were thick padding and fabric, not just because they couldn't afford armour, but because of the fact that fabric can be armour itself.
    If the swords edge alignment is off, it can snag and glance off of the fabric without cutting through it, or even get caught in it.

    • @Edward0919
      @Edward0919 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess that's the reason for cape wearing medieval warriors too

    • @Kurokubi
      @Kurokubi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Edward0919 you're probably thinking of cloaks. Capes are different, They don't usually close in the front, reach below the waist, are usually round pieces of fabric that are worn similarly to a shawl and, most importantly are worn over cloaks. Capes are meant to add warmth and weather proofing ( keep out the wind and rain) in this, it is similar to a cloak. It has been used as a way to display rank in the military, social status in society, and hierarchical status in nobility. However, it's base function has changed little. (Well, while it was still in use. Now-a-days, people think of superheroes when they here cape, which isn't very accurate)
      As previously stated, cloaks were used as a wind block, warmth and protection against the rain. Not only that, they were used for a blanket during particularly cold nights during travels, or a small tent for shelter. When they didn't need to use it as a piece of clothing, it could be used as a bag or could have the warrior's (or common person's) belongings rolled up into it, tied, and secured to a horse or on their person as a backpack. There are many, MANY other uses for cloaks but I'm too lazy to list them all.
      Edit: oh, but fighting in a cloak is difficult, annoying, and impractical. The cloak gets in the way 9 out of 10 times and makes swinging a sword a pain, forget about any kind of agility. You basically have a sail on you.
      I mean, you could _potentially_ wrap it around your off hand arm if you need to but I'm not too sure that's any more helpful... in fact I'm pretty sure that's actually unhelpful.

    I have a question: How thick these helmets was? Could you cut through it with, for example, a longsword or an axe?
    And, if I understand well, was the sword, which the test was done with, blunt? 1:53 If the "edge" was that wide, of course the sword isn't damaged if the helmet is made of iron or mild steel while the blade is made of hardened steel. Even a cheap medium carbon steel, if it's hardened, i don't expect it to be damaged if the sword has no real edge.

    • @kingjoebail7300
      @kingjoebail7300 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thicker edge is at a wide degree of angle. So this sword is more for chopping with great force. It will be abit shrap to the touch. But it's true edge isn't razor shrap until you swing it. The steel has alot goings on here it is why the hardest steel always wins when it comes to cut each other. The blade he banished was just for this test on armor and other harder targets. A waskbsi is a much sharper blade and is famously the blade that cut silk.

    Helmet cutting is possible. I saw a Sword Master from Japan perform at the National martial arts competition at Crystal Palace. He had studied the art of helmet cutting all his life, and he did manage to cleave the top of a traditional helmet as pictured
    Not completely in half but it cut through the metal right across the top and would have instantly killed anyone wearing it. I don't believe it was faked, I really think he could do it. He even cracked an American Football helmet,that as previously demonstrated couldn't be harmed by a claw hammer!

    But still, the blade probably isn't penetrating that deep. However, if the inside of the helmet indents enough to touch your skull, it would be a serious concussion. The blade wouldn't actually need to touch you as the blunt force trauma alone would knock you out, or worse.

    love what you did here. i only have a few critic points. if you dont mind ofcourse.
    1. the helmet was placed too low, its should be on head level. like it would be in a fight. when you place it that low its much easyer to put in a lot of force.
    2. the helmet was placed on a solid piece of wood. a person wearing a helmet isnt as solid as a piece of wood wearing it. a person would give in a little when you hit him. absorbing a lot of the force.
    i think you wouldnt have been able to cut the helmet if you changed these 2 things.

    a few things to note:
    -silk is hard to cut. multi-layer silk armor was used by various asian cultures throughout different time periods.
    -their sensei guy (im sure hes great) didnt cut the tatami well. a good cut will leave the bottom half and stand in place with little movement, this suggests that the alignment of the edge of his blade was not in alignment with the direction of his cut.
    -the helmet was not set up correctly. there would have been a leather strapped harness to keep the helmet off of the head (or at least padding of some sort). additionally, a human head wearing the helmet would not have stayed in place like that helmet does on the wooden block, a real human target would move and sway with the blow, causing the cut to glance off the side, or at the least not receive near as much damage, as the force of the blow would be decreased by the movement of the target. im not saying it would be impossible to cut, but waaaaay less likely than what this video tries to demonstrate.

    • @adenyang4398
      @adenyang4398 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For longswords and Han jians probably depends on the blade type. Something like the svante probably comes closest, Han jians would also need to sport thicker later era blades as opposed to thin long ones.

    To see the real deal check out the video of kabutowari performed by Kawabata Terutaka using a sword made by Yoshihara Yoshindo.
    I first saw the entire video at a London Token Kai,standing next to me was a very slight Japanese gentleman who reached roughly my shoulder in height,I realised it was actually the man himself,I smiled,bowed,he smiled in return,no words necessary,he understood from my reactions how I felt about his performance with that blade and he appeared to be pleased.
    Watch it for the technique and focus.
