  • The confusion in the Miltonia and Miltoniopsis classification is always present on store shelves, but this will not be the subject of our film. It is important to us that it is a fairly widely available orchid, which can be an alternative to the most popular phlegmopsis. And if someone would like to have an orchid at home, which smells ... should be interested in these specimens.
They are epiphytes. Most of the hybrids of Miltonia and Miltoniopsis have relatively large, flat flowers, somewhat reminiscent of pansies 5-6 cm in diameter or even larger. The flowers are colorful and there are such colors as: white, yellow, red, pink or purple. Miltoniopsis produces oval pseudobulbs on which there are single leaves.
These orchids were clamoring for the fact that they were difficult to grow, not for beginners. Meanwhile, do not be discouraged because they bloom long and beautifully. You only have to meet several conditions.
First - light. Miltoniops like light scattered. Suitable for them will be the eastern or western window, as well as the southern window, provided that appropriate shading is applied.
They feel good at room temperature. In truth, it would be best if it fell to 15-18 degrees Celsius at night, and in the day it increased to temperatures above 20 degrees, but our housing conditions are completely tolerated.
Another important element of cultivation is watering and humidity. If our orchid is properly watered, the humidity will not matter, it should be over 50%. This can be achieved with a humidifier, or placing a tray with water and expanded clay or pebbles on which plants will be placed. With spraying, be careful because the water remaining in the corners of the leaves can lead to their yellowing and falling.
Miltoniopsis likes to have a moist substrate, but it should dry slightly between watering. If it is too moist, the roots and leaves from the bottom will start to brown and will rot. On the other hand, during flowering these plants are sensitive to complete drying of the substrate, then the flower edges dry up. On the other hand, a continuous excess of moisture can cause flower rot.
Miltoniopsis has very delicate roots, they are extremely sensitive and we must remember about it during fertilization.
So let's not apply nutrients to a dry substrate, because it is unhealthy for the roots of these orchids. Before fertilizing the plants should be poured. We fertilize them on average once a month with an orchid preparation.
Miltoniopsis leaves are excellent indicators of the state of the plant. You just need to be able to read what they are telling us.
An indication of water scarcity is the formation of harmonias on the leaves. In this situation, we need to increase the frequency of watering. If the leaves become yellow-green or even red, it is a sign that the plant has too much light. If our orchid has too little light, the leaves will turn dark green. Stains on the leaves may be a residue after wetting the plant or the onset of fungal disease, often caused by too moist substrate. For our miltoniopsis to be healthy, it should be replanted every year, after the flowering period. He likes narrow pots, so it's often enough to replace the substrate with new ones, removing brown or rotten roots on the occasion. We use a permeable substrate for orchids.
If this orchid feels good in our home, it will release 2 or even 3 stems on each new increment. In addition to being lovely flowers, they still smell.
The smell can be sweet, honey or simply floral depending on the variety. Feel it well in the whole room, and often even in the whole apartment. The flowers on the plant last from 4 to 8 weeks, but as a cut flower they are unstable. Healthy miltoniopsis often produce another floral shoot a few months after the previous flowering, so a well-cultivated plant can decorate our home with flowers for most of the year.
After the fading, when the floral shoot withers, we can cut it down, low at the pseudobulb, but be careful not to damage both it and the leaves.

Pozdrawiam.
