When we see something that is odd, or that we don’t fully understand, our brains often go into defense mode. And just as he was describing, there’s a rational part of your brain that knows that more than likely we are not in any real danger, but there is also the defensive part of your brain that is noticing every tiny detail that could possibly become a problem. We have to then be cautious, because it could be that you are in danger, but at the same time listen to the rational and logical part of your brain that is usually correct in telling you that you aren’t in any danger.

I was at the airport where there were a lot of armed enforcers and I was lining up to check in my tool bag but a lovely staff advised that I could take that onboard with me. I showed him the contents and he then kindly advised me to check that bag in. On that very early morning drive to the airport, I was pulled over by a police who asked for my ID and my motive. I had to show him my place of employment, my air ticket in order to explain where I was heading. So many things to explain...
I started flying again 2 weeks after, the attendant came and offered Champagne, I told her that I don't drink, and she asked me to look around, and do I realize that I am virtually flying a private jet, so why not live it up a little, sure enough, there were just a few of us on the plane, totally out numbered by the crew

I actually did fly to St Louis a week after 9/11 , the plane was less then half full . Three weeks later returned to England and there were more cabin staff then passengers. Fact is all ten of us would have been better off without any cabin staff. It was a TWA flight and a couple of days later the airline went broke , so their lack of enthusiasm is understandable.
I remember having the back of the bus all to myself on a relatively busy bus just after 7/7. It was actually very uncomfortable. Looking back now when I tell people about those times I can only laugh

I was due to fly back to the UK on the 12th but the flight was cancelled and I got a flight on the 14th. I paid careful attention to my fellow travellers and I don't apologise for that. I honestly wanted to see nothing but white European faces. Looking out a window I saw the baggage carts arrive closely followed by two black SUVs which came to a sudden halt and disgorged a dozen black-clad, heavily armed men. They pushed the baggage handlers to the ground and pointed guns at their heads while waving their arms around. No idea what was going on as I obviously couldn't hear anything but after about ten minutes they all got back in their vehicles and drove away leaving a couple of bewildered-looking airport staff to continue loading. At that point, I wanted to get back off the plane but there was no way they would allow anything irregular. Obviously, it didn't explode and Ricky's story is hilarious.

I flew shortly after 9/11 too and the guy in the seat directly in front of me was Arab with “the gear” on and as the plane starts to taxi he chants some prayer with “alahu ackbar” in it. The rational liberal in me took a hike at that moment. I was scared shitless. In the ensuing years I’ve come to know quite a few Muslims and I realize it’s nothing, but 9/11 had everybody absolutely terrorized.
