  • Not much is really known about the Man who taught many of the modern-day karate masters. His name was William Kwai Sun Chow. Born in Hawaii, he spent much of his life there. He is directly or indirectly responsible for many of the more well-know masters of our day. There aren't many photos of Professor Chow and even less video footage. Thanks to SGM Eugene Sedeno we have a short video of Professor Chow demonstrating at the 1982 California Karate Championships, aka the 'CKC'. He is assisted by Professor Marvin Cunningham. Listen as those who were there talk about Grandmaster Professor Chow. Part 1. More to come

I don’t understand how this incredible podcast has only 1300 views and only 10 comments.

Nice comment, thanks. It just needs to be out there for a while.. As the one who brought these masters together, I don't understand either but... its there now for the history records.

I made a video on my experience training Chinese Kempo here on Oahu back in the 70’s while Professor Chow had an active school. It’s about what Professor Chow meant to all the Kempo Practitioners and how he was revered to the Kempo Practitioners. It’s equal to how the BJJ practitioners in Brazil respect Helio Gracie and his brothers.

What is the sparring like in Chinese Kenpo?

@@TshepoKotelo I cannot reply for all Chinese Kempo practitioners or all Kempo practitioners. But I made a vid many years ago that is still on TH-cam. Try and put in What is Chinese Kempo Tavares. It shows some class sparring and competition bouts. Also some self-defense techniques that have since been modified. We had some bad comments but that’s how TH-cam comments go. Take the good with the bad. Aloha. Keep training.

I read that his father was Korean, not Chinese. Don't know if Chow is a Korean sur name, we know that it is a Chinese sur name.
