BMW 340i vs Jaguar XE S Driving and Interior Comparison

- The premium sports sedan market has been dominated by the three German manufacturers: BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. For years these three have tussled for top-dog honours and it has been the BMW 3-Series which has emerged as the most dynamic of the three. Fast forward to 2015 and British carmaker Jaguar is trying to muscle in on this segment. The Jaguar XE has been tested by Cars.co.za previously in 2.0-litre diesel guise and while we were impressed with what it offered, it's pricing was fatal.
With the launch of the BMW 3-Series LCI highlighting the top of the range 340i, we thought it would make for a perfect comparison to put the flagship German against the top-of-the-range Jaguar XE S. Upon closer inspection and you'll see in the table below, both of these cars are exceptionally close in terms of engine outputs, performance and size.
The test consisted of two parts: a dynamic driving test through one of South Africa's finest roads as well as an interior/space comparison as both of these cars still have to cater for passengers. We learnt a lot about both cars and why they're both well balanced and entertaining, but at the end of the day there could only be one winner.

The jag is def the hottest car in its class! Just beautiful!
T K I bought a brand new 3.0 Supercharged XE in 2016 but legally rejected it within four months because of hopeless build quality and, most of all, a totally functioning InControl Touch Pro infotainment system I went back to Mercedes (after having three before the Jaguar) with a C43 AMG Coupe which was also not good (jumping front tyres and juddering wipers - both well documented in TH-cam videos). I ended up with a brand new 2018 BMW 440i Coupe which is easily the best car I’ve had; totally reliable and the best to drive.
Jag interior is so underwhelming dashboard nowhere near as good, questionable design. Otherwise BMW is superior in build quality, performance and handling.

One comment on that car, i do believe its a little pricey, and i do honestly think the extra R20k is worth while if one considers it can buy a brand new Fiesta ST. Use-it, don't Use-it.

I actually commented without having watched the video XD......This presenter is good but the normal one is epic. + I could only find a review of the Cosmo on RPMtv. I'm not looking to purchase a Corsa but it is one of the nicest new cars I have driven in a long time. I'll stick with my Lumina SS until Chevy brings out something similar or else I'll just have to defect to Ford for a Mustang.

Unusual for me as a Jag FUNatic! Bmw took this one. But while the design DNA in bmw has been static and tired for years now, Jaguar is a lot fresher and inspired, they just need to stop playing it safe with conservativeness and ROCK it out!
4:29 at BMW everything is gonna cost you extra. It has been their politics since ages. Rumour has it that one day you will have to pay extra if you want your badge to say BMW. Otherwise you just get the BM or just B.

Jaguar is so much more special than boring that BMW. White or suede leather in the Jag makes the interior a very classy place to cruise in.

i am nor bmw fan but in jag in some places they put werry cheep plastic in audi merc or bmw this not is happend on firs look jag interior looks better but when you looks clouse there is some lag in build quality or material best interior have c class or a4 second bmw third jag but but for my passat interior is on top 3 specially in hi wersion

Jag interior looks really basic and cheap compared to the BMW, I think the BMW looks better and it’s more family friendly.

That touch screen seems to be lagging. On 4:58 he touched the next arrow it took about 1 second to go to the next page.
It behaves odly. 1st touch has a lag while all following touches are way more responsive. I guess it was a thing back then. Like "Yeeees Sir! I aknowledged your pressing of the screen and I shall now commence your command. Please stand by" accompanied by a fanfare and a lightshow except there is none of that. You just have to imagine it while you wait that 1st one second.
..or the CPU is just simply on a dynamic clock. Mostly on sleep (low clock) and once you need it it overclocks itself for better performance.
Infiniti and Lexus you see how the BMW and Jaguar trunk function? And if you haven't have it yet as part of an option in your cars yet I hope you do soon.
Id like to see drag start/race between these cars, to many talking, ok, but these top models ale about engines, so whitch one i realy faster? And I like to see more dynamics test, acceleratin 0-100kmh, or 50-150, or accel. from low rpm on one gear... more street tests plese! :-)

Herakles well good thing its a 335. The N55 can pretty reliably hold up to a tune. I bet it would feel real nice if you added like 30 extra torque to it

Considering these were the performance models I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about how the performance compares between the two cars.
Because the Jag would embarrass it with a 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.
Ultimate driving machine
The BMW engine didn't even make an impression with it's sound, yet the Jaguar which clearly sounded better got negative marks because it didn't sound as amazing as the F TYPE Sports car? Where is the logic.
The Jaguar looks better aesthetically, and more importantly it's a little more upmarket than a BMW in my opinion.

864,000 rand (South African currency) is $60,000 in US currency.
It time consumers went on strike now. These car manufacturers are ripping us out. R850 000 for a 3 series even if it loaded. At least r720 000 for a bmw 340i fully spec. As for the jag i gve up you paying over a million for a fully spec one.
Seem to me that at the end the tester chose the BMW not because of the overall performance but because of the cheaper price..

Damn, these cars are eye-wateringly expensive! 😳 Close to R1m!!! They're pretty cars but the price is absurd, especially considering that I can buy a 320i and make it look exactly like that. Fine, the 340 will outperform the 320i but where you gonna fully enjoy the driving dynamics of that car legally? It certainly ain't a track toy. I'd rather buy a Golf R or a S3 and use the change to pay lobola 😂. Nice review though...where's that other chap who usually does these?
+Pakisa Tsekiso 320i has a low output 2.0T engine, which VW/Audi does much better if that's the size you're looking at.

+Hubscharber problem with VW/Audi is that with similar engine output they are slower than a bimmer. I have a L4 engine F20 and i like it very much, and it is fast enough for me.

Hubscharber I would. I already lease a 320d xDrive and it has got enough power to have fun with. But do not go with the 320i. 320d has got 190hp and 400Nm of torque, you don’t need anything else unless you are a sissy bitch.

Bothered me as well, especially since I drive a legit manual transmission equipped car. I think he said it because you can put the car into sport and shift it manually using the paddles🤷♂️

iv driven the f type and the exhaust note was pretty good and the car was fun but i also own a bolt on bmw 440i and i have to say the bmw is a special car, especially with some tasteful modifications making about 400hp 400+tq
All I had to do was add a CAI and just a flow master exhaust which cost with installation 550 dollars, into my Supercharged Jag and i was at 400 hp. I bought a Jaguar 35T AWD and after the additions i beat my friends 2017 Bmw M3 in a race from 0 to 100 mph. I tested Mercedes, Bmw, Audi and Jaguar and no doubt i went with the best.
You are not comparing like for like in the rear. You sat in the middle in the Jaguar yet you sat in the outside seat in the BMW. How biased is that.

Sorry it's not the range toping model of the 3-series. The range topper is the M3.

XE looks good but it doesn't look modern. Especially those taillights look old fashioned and chubby. Even Toyota has more modern taillights.

Unfortunately due to government taxes and a horrendous exchange rate, the Jaguar isuch more expensive than it should be here in South Africa.

Manco Kwan it still FEELS better than an XE. after a couple of years the XE will be scratched all over (just like the mercedes C piano gloss center consoles) unless you can opt for wood/aluminum/matte plastic instead of gloss plastic, it'll stay looking cheap.

your rear seat comparison is bullshit. I'm no fan of either car for the record but that was hardly fair or transparent. Look at how crunched his legs are when he's sitting in the front seat of the BMW, then how conveniently they don't show the same angle of much much leg room he has in the back seat. Hmmmm.

I thought I was the only one wondering what was going on. I will say however that everyone says the BMW has a little more room, but they are both terrible in this class. The C Class and A6 has more room around the back.

I've owned both, unlike this guy. The jag is a lot more fun. Rly impressed by the handling and the chassi and the looks get a lot more ayballs. The problem with the jag tho is that it's not made in Germany, the build quality is not a match for the bmw.
I have tested both. The Jaguars interior is poorly assembled and finished (for this segment)... if you look at leather stitching for example you'll see that it's very, very approximate and for a car that price it's unacceptable.

340i suck... right out the damn box they need a recall gj bmw when they 1st came out i remember doing recall after recall after recall on the new ones off the truck at our dealer. bmw no longer cares about quality only marketing and money. i mean yes money flows the business but your business is customers and they work hard for these machines, show them some respect and give them a quality product so they can spend more time on the road and not in the service drive.
