This book always made me cry. The first time I was reading it, I was reading it aloud to a group of children in our local community library, so it was very hard and embarrassing to cry in front of them, but they ended up crying a little with me -- I'm not sure if because of the book itself or because they took pity on me. =P
I actually never read this until I was a teen or perhaps even and adult. (I'm not sure exactly which.) But I always thought it was a traumatic sort of story! I don't know why it's considered a classic for children! I find it one of the most depressing things I have ever read.
@@KindCountsDeb3773 I'm not sure what the lesson was intended to be. The boy was utterly selfish, even after he grew up. He never once cared about the tree's feelings/needs. He just used it up, until there was nothing left. He never seemed to recognize that fact, much less feel bad about it. Imagine if the tree had been another person and he treated them that way!
Hopefully the book is made from recycled paper, but that aside, it has a very strong lesson here, not just for children but adults alike.... humans seem to want what they want and be damned who suffers for it. The meak shall not inherit the Earth, we should be saving it, for ALL our children.
Old subject, but : lived in england till 11, the fomrative years. Has lived there for last 20 years. She has BOTH accents, depending on what place. Not uncommon. I like both !
I always greatly dislike it when people make comments like this. What they fail to take into consideration is that in majority of the world trees especially wood and paper trees are sustainably harvested and are planted for the purpose of being harvested and those areas will then get re-planted and young tree produce more oxygen than old trees. The entire forestry process also produces many, many jobs in a variety of areas and so people need to take all these factors into account when makeing comments like this

A lesson in love from the tree. Children, and adults, need and can learn it.

What a sad history :'(
I almost cried. Someone can tell me the name of the book?
the giving tree
Вы давно так книги пишете или недавно начали писать хорошая писательница, просто прелесть. Для детей давно пишите книги
I'd like her to read sth. to me. such a beautiful voice and woman - inside and -out.
she's done quite a bit of voice work (and this for charity) and some animaed film characters. A very soothing, emotional voice (as needed).

why is she being british

Ironically the book uses a lot of nearly blank pages to tell this story... What a waste.

a book on giving, love, and then Peace and you choose to make al negative and short sighted comment. Try to see.
