Their demise was a result of how they expanded so fast by getting work by low ball bidding to force the competition into liquidation. Large fleets like Yardelys of Leeds and Browns of Carsile were east to undercut, their management was old and complacent and when the next generation took over as in Yardely's case they didn't have the hungry killer instinct of Eddie S.
I bet the "next generation" went to public schools. It has happened ever since the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s. Hard working parents, spoilt sons.
I remember my trainer talking about Stobart when I did my National and International CPC back in the mid 90’s. I seem to recall him having his “O” licence taken away on several occasions because of the way he ran his fleet operations. Clearly he was “influencing” someone in the right way as he seemed to bounce back each time!
Had a 'run in' with one of their drivers a few years ago. He was in the wrong lane at an island and tried to cut me up on the exit. We stopped side by side, he put his window down and said i had to let him in because they were the elite. Not so elite now are they?
I’m not saying this was the case here but sometimes Class 1 LGV have to be in the ‘wrong’ lane at the approach to a roundabout or T junction in order for the trailer to be able to negotiate the corner without mounting kerbs or obliterating something. A fact that many car only drivers fail to understand.
I recently did my Class 2 licence and there was a lady doing her Class 2 as well and it turned out that she is the niece of Andrew Tinkler and she explained that although the name and brand colours still exist, the main reason why the Culina group ended up buying Stobart's was because they wanted their contracts with companies and the fleet was a nice addon to the deal. She also mentioned that the Stobart family do have a trucking firm still though, they are called WS transport.
I used to play a game for two players while driving on the motorways- Eddies and Norberts. Each participant chose the trucks they would look out for, either Eddie Stobart or Norbert Dentressangle. The first to reach ten won the game and then you started again. However, if either player spotted a Preston's of Potto truck, that trumped everything and was a game winner.
while them two were popular in later life, when we were on holiday in France and Spain as kids in the late 70's early 80's, we would spot Lloyds of Ludlow Ltd and and Swains of Stretton Ltd (two small Shropshire UK based companies) who's trucks we would often see aboard, and given we live in Shropshire an equal distance from both to the mile, it was a reminder of home, as they were often seen locally too.
No longer with us? That's arguable. Yes, it's been bought out, yes, the lorries are being rebranded and re-liveried, but Eddie Stobart Ltd is still a UK registered company, 2023 accounts are at Companies house and due to be published in about 10 days.

Only avid fans of The Simpsons TV show will like this (the one where Sideshow Bob was trying to kill Bart). Driving along the M6 one dark night, my headlights caught the words "Die Bart" on the back of the vehicle away in front of me. I was puzzled by this for a long time before I eventually caught up with the vehicle. It was an "Eddie Stobart" lorry, but only part of the firm's name on the back doors was showing because one door had been removed. 😂 [ "EdDIE StoBART."]
Culina just don't seem to have the same mentality that Stobart had, just look at the names of the trucks for example which are like the driver's partner on the job.
If you started counting Culina units now it would be around 30% of everything out there! At the base of the cab door you’ll find the name of the former haulier that they bought out. Stobart represents the majority.
Hated them with a passion, took a lot work away from my old firm back in the late eighties, not many hauliers in East Anglia had any time for them. ' I had a run in with one of their gobby shunters in an Amazon RDC in Leicestershire four or so years ago a few weeks before I retired. Good ridance to them and all the other global 'logistics' companies, that word alone was a nail in the coffin of British road haulage.
They got too big for their boots. Tried to muscle in on transport area’s they didn’t know (cars). Lost millions and that was they’re demise. Bye bye! No loss.
Miss seeing Eddie stobart big fan but did actually see tractor unit and trailer heading north on m40 north bound last weekend and sad little chacter am shouted steady a proper one not culina stobart 😢
I did dock security for many years, and Stobart drivers were very often cocky and arrogant - some were just bloody rude. One hated to be told where he had to go, and his catchphrase was: "I know where to go, Hitler." What a charmer.
Such a shame for this iconic haulage company to go. I always thought it was so wealthy nothing could stop it growing & being ever popular by it's megga fans. But, i am sad to hear that this company is no longer in existance. Certainly not the way we loved their drivers for being so sociable to their fans at truckfests & when they get a spare moment to get their pic taken with a happy fan. They always tried to be very obliging to a fan as much as they could. Some of the drivers seemed a bit more popular than others. But, that is the way it was But, all was popular in their own way it just depend on the fan. Once again i am deeply sorry to hear that this HUGE ICONIC!!!! company is no longer more. I thought it went bust , huge debt , liquidation or some other reason. But, i honestly thought that is impossible. . But, like many thousands of others we are so very sorry to hear E. Stobart haulage is no longer no more certainly not the way we loved it. 😂😮😯😟😟😟😟
That's all that Stobart drivers were good for, soaking up the perceived "glory" at truckfests and shows and waving at their "adoring "fans as they drove by. Total tossers the entire lot of them. Ask any of them to tie a dolly and they'd stand there scratching their empty heads.
I've always worked in road haulage and i believe that Stobart as been disliked over the years by other hauling companies and inpart responsible for small haulers go to the wall unable to complete,he seemed to flood the market with vehicles and undercut anyone who stood in his way,it was well known that loads coming out of England when reach Carlisle they would deliver for free products going on into Scotland, there are many great haulers apart from Stobart like Nights of Old,Jack Richards and many more, after Eddie past away the strict rules fell away, gone were the white shirt and tie which was a stupid idea anyway, after all truck drivers are not meant to look like coach drivers,Stobart will exist but not the way club members remember it.
They have gotten hold of a number of companies. I think the bit they got was the Tesco contract. Stobart thought they could deliver a load to Tesco then go to another customer around the corner for a load of whatever. Didn't realise they had to take stuff back to the depo..🤡. Drivers given unrealistic targets and times to get from A to B.
@@michaelwalker1145 Culina hasn’t just taken over the Stobart Tesco contract they’ve taken everything as well as another 6 well known hauliers and they’ve still expanding. Talking to one of their drivers recently and he said they’re a joy to work for compared to Stobart.
@@winco68 will they be going the same way as Stobart. Going bust every few years. Looks like Stobart are still going as I've seen a few of there trucks out and about, or are they just the last to be rebranded.
@@michaelwalker1145 I doubt Culina will go the way of Stobart. They’re a German company wholly owned by the dairy conglomerate Müller that is renowned for efficiency. Transport companies that have been acquired by Culina have remained intact operationally although they’ve been rebranded in Culina livery with the old operator name at the base of the unit cab doors. This enables them to be sold off more easily at a future date if necessary. Trailers are slowly being rebranded with the original operator name on the side in the Culina typeface and Culina on the rear doors/shutters. It will take years to rebrand/replace all of the original Stobart trailers as there were literally thousands of them although there are now very few Stobart units around in original livery. There are quite a few of the rebranded Culina typeface ‘Stobart’ trailers out there now although i suspect what you saw was an original Stobart trailer being pulled by a yet to be rebranded Stobart unit - a sight that is becoming rarer by the day. Stobart as we knew it has gone though and few tears have been shed except perhaps by those ‘spotters’ and fans who know little about the industry.

Plus well before CULLINA bought it out and it was on telly a massive share was bought by a London banking firm with William and his mate tinkler how he fell out with had part running of it somewhere round November 2017 it had to be bailed out again with a some of 51 million pound at this point William stobart put a lot of us own money back in to buy more shares back and try running it his way again
Remember up North are 30 years behind 😂😂
This computer generated commentary is utter crap and ruins the subject...
Sorry about that. Would you be interested in a similar video with a proper voiceover?
Well if anyone looked on Google it was culine and turners of Ely Suffolk and ws transport and Cambridge has all of the new trucks and new trailers but not the Eddie storbart trailers they use there own trailers to do the job and there own trucks
Why the computerised voice?
Switched off
Sorry about that. Future videos will always be voiced as they are now
Only avid fans of The Simpsons TV show will like this (the one where Sideshow Bob was trying to kill Bart). 😂
[ "EdDIE StoBART."]
Eddie was taken over by culina good or bad😮lwas a spoter and still can see a stobart liverd track ter trailer some time 😮
Culina just don't seem to have the same mentality that Stobart had, just look at the names of the trucks for example which are like the driver's partner on the job.
Culina are a German company, totally different mind set.
Culina are owned by Müller the German dairy conglomerate. Their end game is efficiency not sentimentality.
Grief! I hate these "Dalek" commentaries!!
On our coach trips.we use to count how many trucks we would see.
If you started counting Culina units now it would be around 30% of everything out there! At the base of the cab door you’ll find the name of the former haulier that they bought out. Stobart represents the majority.
He passed away and the company was financed by a larger group to expand keeping the name and brand.
Edward stobart died. Eddie was the father. I dont know weather he is still alive or not .
Got greedy and believed there own hype
Hated them with a passion, took a lot work away from my old firm back in the late eighties, not many hauliers in East Anglia had any time for them. ' I had a run in with one of their gobby shunters in an Amazon RDC in Leicestershire four or so years ago a few weeks before I retired. Good ridance to them and all the other global 'logistics' companies, that word alone was a nail in the coffin of British road haulage.
Ha ha ha!! Myself and my fellow 113 drivers back in 2010 to 11 had to put up these when working for tesco and they just took our jobs...
What a shame, their drivers were known for their courtesy
Clowns more like
I did dock security for many years, and Stobart drivers were very often cocky and arrogant - some were just bloody rude. One hated to be told where he had to go, and his catchphrase was:
"I know where to go, Hitler."
What a charmer.
I think i stand corrected
Sorry mate, they were a bunch of wankers
@@brianartillery ... 🤣🤣... There's always a couple.
What happened to Eddie Stobart
Culina bought them out and got rid of the name...just like some other companies they have bought recently.....
You can find the former company name on the base of the cab doors.
@@winco68 Hardly the same when it comes to a company i was talking about (not stobarts they can rot in hell for all i care)
@@b34rdy No it’s not the same but at least according to some drivers Culina are playing by the rules which is more than could be said of Stobarts.
@@winco68 i twas another company culina took over and decimated im on about
So they now are gone. Remembered seeing those wagons doing there business of what they we're built for. 😢
Yes, it seems they were into everything, even had a large fleet of car transporter lorries.
Often to be seen buried under a bridge somewhere!
Happy they have gone , they undercut most euro haulage and killed a lot of good companys.
Third rate drivers, greed, they lost their way,or respect years ago,Eddie must be spinning in his grave.
Stoddart was sold to culina so the colour has gone
Dentresangle ?
That's all that Stobart drivers were good for, soaking up the perceived "glory" at truckfests and shows and waving at their "adoring "fans as they drove by. Total tossers the entire lot of them. Ask any of them to tie a dolly and they'd stand there scratching their empty heads.
Corporate greed got the better of them and good riddence to them (although I do have some sympathy for the displaced workers).
They stopped washing their trucks.
Was destined never to exceed 56.
Im dure ive seen stobart trucks with the stobart logo in the culina typeface, culina bought out stobart after their ladt bankruptcy i think.
@@winco68 how do you see W S going down the line. Looks to me that they have there fingers in lots of pies so to speak. Going off the different types of trucks they run.
You think or what
Anyone remember Microsoft Sam?
Stobarts didn’t own the trucks they were leased, hence why they were wrapped. You can’t paint a leased vehicle.
I bet Eddie Stobart is turning in his grave.
Shame was once recognised as a very good hauler unfortunately the standers of their drivers and diversity has let down all there hard work that’s a lesson other haulers need to think about
I take it you’re not in the haulage industry?
He died.
Culina own stobart
Stoddart is know cullina. No Stoddart no more.
OH NO!!! Anyway..........

Totally agree with you. And the culina driver's aint much better.... Their TV program that they had was total comedy... The outfit completely undercut the transport rates and the smaller haulage companies didn't stand a chance in competing with Sobarts.... That was the best news I heard when I heard they got bought out.... They got too big too quickly and it serves the idiots right..... Karma's a bitch aint it.?
