German mainstream scrambles to thwart rising popularity of the far right | DW News

  • The Alternative for Germany (AfD), which the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has partially classified as right-wing extremist, is enjoying record highs in opinion polls.
At the same time, hundreds of thousands of people have been taking to the streets to demonstrate against the anti-immigration party.
The German Bundestag is also debating how to deal with the AfD, with the three governing parliamentary factions - the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and the neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP)- submitting a motion on the issue. The topic: "Resilient democracy in a diverse country - a clear stand against the enemies of democracy and their plans of forced displacement."
The move was prompted by a media report about a meeting last fall of right-wing extremists, attended by AfD officials as well as members of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The gathering is said to have been about plans for the so-called remigration, or expulsion, of millions of people who have immigrated to Germany.
In the parliamentary debate, Bernd Baumann, the AfD's parliamentary secretary and chief whip in the German parliament, told lawmakers the meeting was no more than a "small, private debate club," but not a "secret meeting dangerous to the public."
But Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) called it "an active effort to shift borders and to spread contempt for democracy and misanthropy into the heart of society."
Faeser said she could also imagine banning the party - but only as a last resort.

There are two ways of reading your question, either you are ignorant to Germany and German policies, or you in malice try to attempt to dilute to subject because you support Nazism or Extreme Right-wing ideology. I will give you the benefit of doubt, and choose ignorance as your questioning.
So here goes. It is not about "Banning political opponents" as there are plenty other parties in Germany that are in opposition to the government. German law forbid Nazism and extreme Right-wing ideology, due to their history. AfD has since its birth, tap-danced on the border to extremism, but never crossing, or so we thought. It seems now they has indeed passed over the line and into illegal territory. Which is what the courts will decide.

They wanna ban them bc they know they‘ll otherwise lose the next election. They plan to ban them under the premise of a few members of the party being in a secret club who are actually neo-fascist, which imho is like a good thing, the problem is that they use that to neferiously also ban all members of this very split party that aren’t fascist but just right wing and unhappy with the cdu who lead the country to its downfall over 16 years.
It’s right wing politics that brought us the problem, it’s right wing politics trying to solve the problem, it’s the rare rather left government trying to prohibit them from doing so, I understand why people are angry on all sides, it is undeniably authoritarian. Yes the fascist wing of the AfD should be prohibited, the members removed, but canceling a whole party with over 20% of all votes bc of some members? Thilo sarazzin who wrote a book about the problems of mass immigration was criticized heavily, yet no one banned the right wing cdu.
This is just a shameless attempt to try to stay in power, as they know all to well that the AfD is the most voted party after the other opportunistic right wing party called cdu.
I don’t like the fact the afd is so successful, but I’ve gotta face reality that as long as no other party fixes actually existing problems, the afd will always exist. If they ban it, there will just be a new party taking its place. It’s exactly what trump is to the US, a symptom of an existential problem. They think they can cure the desease by cutting of a limb, while the body is already rotten to the core.

I like how the guest used the term "technical" in relation to fixing the problem. But I agree, what the left-wing should do is focus on first identifying the problems as seen in the eyes of the German people and then applying practical solutions so that German people not only hear about proposed solutions, but can actually see results on the ground. In most cases this will revolve around what a German person sees as his/her benefits entitlement for being a German citizen vs what he/she sees as benefits lost due to immigrants.

How do you intend to thrawt the rise of right wing parties?
Politicians that we elect are asked to act on behalf of the electorate. Once elected, the elitist mainstream parties then stick two fingers up at those who elected them. Therefore the electorate feel betrayed by those who they put their faith in and turn to alternative parties who listen.
    So the answer.
Mainstream elitest political parties, stop sticking two fingers up at the electorate once elected, listen and then enact upon what the electorate asked you to do. It really is very very simple, even a snottite could work that one out.

Throughout history, it has shown that when there is a recession or people's lives, get harder. They need people to blame it on. The biggest mistake of Europe was seeing the USA as their masters and listening to them. There were no major problems before they came and started with Ukraine. Then, with Gaza conflict, instead of being the true leader of a bright and straightforward vision. Germany was one of the leaders in Europe, which was well respected worldwide.
