Defiance in Germany: Can mass protests stop the far right? | To The Point

  • Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Germany. It’s the largest social movement in the country in decades. In cities and towns large and small, protestors have been demonstrating against the far right, to advocate for an open society and to protect their democracy. And yet, supporters of Germany’s biggest far-right party seem undaunted, with more people than ever joining the organization. How dangerous is the AfD? What is causing such anger within mainstream society? And how resilient is Germany’s democracy? On To the Point we ask: Defiance in Germany: Can mass protests stop the far right?
    00:00 Opener
    01:37 The foundation of German democracy is at stake
    02:50 The crowds at the protests are very diverse
    03:50 There’s a rise of far-right-parties in many European countries
    06:30 It’s now getting clearer what the AfD stands for
    07:25 Democracy worldwide is in decline
    08:30 People now realize how powerful the AfD really is
    10:00 Is Germany seeing parallels with the Weimar Republic era?
    14:00 The recession, wars and inflation are challenging German politics
    15:20 AfD is presenting simple solutions with an attractive narrative
    18:30 There is widespread discontent with the German government
    21:30 There are similarities between extremists in Germany and the U.S.
    22:15 Banning the AfD would be very tricky. Similar efforts have failed before
    24:00 Democratic parties must show more presence on the ground

    It's no good blaming far-right and AFD now. It is time to look back and see why traditional parties lost voters' trust and learn from their mistakes. The main issue with centre-left and left-wing politicians is that they worry more about political correctness than issue-solving. I assume a big chunk of German voters are not happy with the current immigration and integration. It is an uncomfortable topic to address, but it must be addressed to prevent the rise of the far right. At the end of the day, voters are behind ADF. Parties should explore/investigate why part of German society voted for them and what needs to be done to get their vote back.

    • @berhanxo
      @berhanxo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      if you ask what people want they literally say they want the expulsion of some portions of society. what is there to investigate?

    • @svyturiukas
      @svyturiukas 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Did ADF mention that at their election rally? No. What parties need to investigate why part of society dislikes immigration? What issues does immigration bring, and how can we address those issues promptly and effectively. I believe ADF promised to address those issues, but they didn't tell us their methods. At the same time, left-wing politicians are failing to see that, and we have the outcome. Even DW failed to look into voters' reasons and just faffed about green energy, the war in Ukraine, and the energy crisis.

      @@kinngrimmwell it is obvious that AfD it is not left wing. You clearly don't understand what I am trying to say. You are protesting against fascist and that's fine. You can ban these fascists, but you won't ban the voters are you? You don't even know who they are. People who voted AfD will vote for the same ultra right wing party again. What I am suggesting is to see what AfD promised on their pre-election rally and where mainstream parties failed and how to get votes back from AfD.

    As an American, when I hear "threat to democracy", I immediately discount it as politicking. This rhetoric has been exhausted throughout American and European politics. @crosstraffic187 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No, this is not politicking nor American rhetoric. When massive amounts of people take to the streets they perceive the threat to be real. We've been dealing with an extreme right wing party in Belgium for decades. Now they are the biggest party in Flanders. People vote for these parties out of frustration and dissatisfaction with the current system. This party scapegoats immigrants, who are the most vulnerable and powerless people in society, but have zero clue on how to govern. When talking about healthcare, education, housing they have no answers. All these parties sing the same song and sound exactly alike. Immigrants are not responsible for Belgians not having enough children and unless they want to work in they're 70's or 80's (which they do not) they'll have to accept immigration. As far as culture is concerned, the west is a mono culture and extremely diverse. We steal from everybody's culture. We eat foods from India, China or anywhere else on the planet. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Reggae, Hip Hop etc.. are not European inventions and we love them. Fortunately in Belgium in a multi party system other parties can refuse and have refused to work with this party, unfortunately this may no longer be the case. Trump did not create this, he simply took this over and amplified it. Perhaps it's us Europeans who owe Americans an apology for this vile ideology.

    In North America, non voters are not included as abstained voters and those their so called equals elect get included for not voting, as abstained voters.

      @@hiddenname9809 I am not better than anyone. It is how I personally perceive the political program of the AfD party. I mean, let's look at one of their demands, to focus on Germany problems only by separating from the EU as a country and neglecting the global problems. In today's frame time where a lot of problems are globally connected to each other this vision by the AfD is unrealistic. Another unrealistic demand is, to believe that you can make people have more sex in a modern society like Germany to make more children. Every modern society with a modern social system and good living conditions has usually people involved who do not want many children anymore. For that reason people immigrating from other countries are a crucial requirement for the economic efficiency and the social system. And let's not talk about all the constant populistic comments in the public by high standing AfD party members just to get the public attention instead of really trying to solve the core problems. I mean let's face it, the main political program by the AfD party is to deport immigrants from Germany and promoting this political demand as if this would solve a lot of problems in Germany. Even if the AfD party would only aim to deport criminal immigrants, it would not solve for example the education problem with some teachers struggling to do their work, as the AfD party does promote and lie to a lot of people. There are so many other examples the AfD party publicly promotes which sound as a simple solution because you can pin point your finger on one "problem" group of people, yet by that neglecting the real complex global world that exists.
