About:
I sat down on a log in the forest to eat my sandwich and heard a series of tiny, high pitched sounds. Two shrews were scooting around in the fallen leaves behind the log, and they were having a conversation. Delightful creatures.
I had a similar experience, sitting behind a stump while deer hunting. Only in my case there was just one shrew and it was singing it's little shrew songs to me!
I was expecting you to finish your statement by saying you accidentally crushed some shrews who were under the log you sat on.

So cute!
@granthropologist3622 Thank you for sharing your great Shrew encounter that you had. It was a great short story to get to read.🥰🫂
"They are very aggressive and will bite"
How shrewd!
Lol❤

I can tell a video is good when I'm rewinding rather than fast forwarding
never thought about it like that
You have successfully ruined my mind, Thanks! :)
_But why would you fast-forward on a video that's less than four minutes long_
@@robertsteel3563 😂I'm guessing you're joking, but if you weren't, how would this ruin your mind? IDK why, but I'm curious.
@@MichaylaLovesJesus83 IDk lol
I have a whole community of these lil cuties that live in my perennial vinca that surrounds my house. They do no damage to your home, eat bugs, and are very territorial which means that they protect my house from mice and insect pests! I hear them "talking" sometimes when its quiet in the garden. Once i uncovered one on accident and instead of running he stood up, raised his little arms and made the cutest little roar 😅. Such spirit!
Many years ago in Alaska, my husband dug a deep hole for our outhouse at a remote cabin. When he was finished digging there were 5 shrews that had fallen in the hole. It was late in the day so he left them, and when he went back the next morning to resume work, there was only one (rather chubby looking) shrew in the hole 😮.
Shrews need food very often. But that's still crazy that they could cannibalize damn
moles in a bucket do the same thing
Cue the startrek fight music
@@elcucuy1770Lots of animals cannibalize each other lol
My grandmother always told me as a child that if i was out in the woods and seen a shrew to stay away, or it would run up my pant leg and crawl up my bum. I have no idea why but shrews still make me uneasy to this day
sounds ignorant
@@julieking4304 hello pot, I'm kettle
Your mother sounds hilariously out of pocket and fun!

How very… specific
Hi Shawn, you've captured one of my favorite mammals. I always rush them right back out and release them as soon as possible. We need them. Thanks for sharing how fascinating they are.
Shawn taketh life but he also giveth too.
I appreciate he's knowledgeable of invasive and native and relocates native
I've caught a few short tailed shrews in my mousetraps. Fun fact, they also eat the dead mice.
Mice also eat dead mice.
Thanks to the both of you. I laughed so hard. 😂 Love ❤️ from Australia 🇦🇺
@@kerrynicholls6683 You really want a good laugh, just look up ToniandRyan! They are wicked funny!
I also heard that Shrews are able to take down animals several times their weight, and will also prey on reptiles, amphibians, other small mammals, possibly small birds, and sometimes even each other.
As demonstrated in the outhouse story in another comment!
That’s watershrews. We get them in the UK and they predominantly hunt frogs and fish using their venom to take them down
many many years ago when i was about 11, i heard my dog kind of growl barking while trying to grab something near the front porch of my house. I ran over to see what he was trying to get .I saw a tiny shrew skrieking and jumping right at my dog's face. This very aggressive behavior confused my dog and he backed off. She was a Shepard type dog and pretty large. My memories of this encounter as very vivid. The shrew won that contest and lived to see another day..
Very shrewd
Love shrews, they were the only rodent that came in our home when I was a kid. You didn't mention how stinky they are. What an experience having a female give birth. I hope you update us on the shrewlets. Thank you so much for caring for her and sharing this interaction. Amazing how quickly the shrew learned you were a food source.
Shrews are not rodents, Shaun mentions this in the video 👍
They are more related hedgehog
My mother said shrew is innocent creature unlike rat and should not be killed.
your mother is strangely wise. most old people can't tell a rat from a hamster
Rats are chill too 🥺
@@LiveLaughLovecraftnot the pest ones
PET rats are chill because they know you feed them and care for them, also aren't getting diseases from outside. PEST rats know you are just a food source and an obstacle to said food, as well as carry disease. @@LiveLaughLovecraft

A year or two ago, my father and I caught a pretty large northern short-tailed shrew with a few cichlid pellets and a 5 gallon home depot bucket thinking that a mole had managed to get into the basement. It was way too cold to just let her out, almost four or five below zero, so we ended up making a little enclosure for her using a twenty gallon long tank with plenty of nesting materials and places to hide away in.
Called her Snootles because of the long snout (it reminded us of the one star wars character Sy Snootles) and how she would ‘snootle’ underneath all the leaves we put in there.
She was one of the coolest animals i’ve ever had the pleasure of having as sort of a pet. She would come out of her little hiding spots when I would open up the cage, and I would feed her earthworms, crickets, ect with a pair of narrow-nosed tongs, and she would take the food so gently. She was practically tong tamed.
She ended up passing away about three months after we had first gotten her set up, took her to an exotics vet to see if we could figure out what she died from, turns out she was pretty darn old for a shrew. Im grateful that I got to spend that short amount of time with her, and that she seemed to live a happy rest of her life. This video reminded me of her, and it left a huge smile on my face.
😊
Great story! A couple years ago, I befriended a northern short-tailed shrew who dug a burrow under my porch. I fed her a big handful of organic dried cat or dog food daily, which I left outside the burrow entrance. When it was feeding time, she stuck her head out of her burrow. Sometimes, she even squeaked in excitement! Shrews have huge appetites. I went through many 5 pound bags of pet food just to feed for her. I don't own a dog or a cat, I was buying that food just for her! I fed her for five months, up until one day in February. That day, I left food outside the burrow entrance, and it didn't disappear. I continued to leave food outside the burrow over the next several days, and it wasn't touched. I knew my little buddy passed, because northern short-tailed shews have very short life spans, and most of them pass away in the winter. I miss my little buddy!
Sounds like you gave her a great "retirement home" to live out her twilight days!
Now Snootles is immortalised on TH-cam.
Thank you for the star wars reference. ❤
Thank you for caring for this mama and babies and helping her recover for a few days after the birth! what a blessing for her and for us!
Would you look at that snout!
*Opera music starts playing*
Thats crazy she just plopped them out 😭 glad u helped her tho get settled
A shrew giving birth to five babies is cool, but what's astounding is how a shrew knows how to film herself. That's on a different level.
Baby shrews: shrewlets
Baby shrimps: shrimplets
Connection?
This is one of the most fascinating videos you've ever produced!
Very cute. They are fierce too. When my cats brought a mole inside and let it free, I tried to pick it up and it fought back. I had to use leather gloves and I could feel its bite. Strong animals for their size. They are impressive.
This was "The Taming of the Shrew", at least temporarily, lol. I don't know why but I just don't care for shrews, they are a strange looking animal and have that non-stop hunger. They serve a great purpose but they still give me the creeps, lol. Great job Shawn.
I just came here to find out what a Shrew is. 🤷🏻♂️
My mother in law 😂
I've dated a few in my time. 😏
How shrewed of you
There are many interesting shrews to discover, they're super neat little critters. Congrats on your new shrew knowledge
The only reason I know what they are is because I read a book series about feral cats and they often prey on shrews and even name their kittens after them lol
shrews are definitely a problem to me, they keep invading my house even more than mice and voles. lol
And they apparently taste bad or something so cats usually won't eat them even if they hunt and kill 'em, leaving fuzzballs in the corners to dy up... xD
Funny creatures in the wild, not so fun in a house being so small they can squeeze through ridiculously small cracks.
You might wanna make sure you don't have some kind of insect infestation, considering shrews are highly attracted to invertebrates
I find my cat loves shrews, I keep mice and she loves to leave dead shrews right outside the window of the room my mice are kept In
@panoken2130 I was just going to say this. They can't eat the food mice do, so they have to be eating insects. Which means op must have way too many in their house. Like, possible termites. The voles may be the least of the issues.
WOW! What a neat thing to do, Shawn. I'm so glad you had the opportunity and the inclination to capture that on video and share it with us. Thank you. We don't get to see something like that very often.
It looked like it was not much of a big deal for her. They seemed to pop out pretty easily and quickly, but with her accelerated metabolism maybe it didn't feel all that quick and easy to her.
It is my understanding that most animals don't experience too much discomfort giving birth (or laying eggs). It's the extremely large size of the human brain that makes childbirth unusually difficult for us.
They look so strange, but very cute! I hope her babies grow up well!
i cant even fathom how absolutetly tiny and gummy the babies are
Didn't know there were shrews there Shawn, we get lots here in England but they have struggled in recent years. As a child in the 70's and 80's I used to see them a lot by the stream in a valley where I live. Never knew their babies were called shrewlets, that is so cute!+
I love that you cared for them so well, so sweet. Your videos are so awesome!
They are cool - I had some running around in the shed one winter - they were always searching around for food .And if a shrew gets caught in a live trap with mice - not a good outcome for the mice !
That’s awesome that you took care of them 😮
I have either long island shrews or voles, but I adore them! We have a tiny property and I swear, they keep our little garden paradise happy and bug free. XOXO Thank you for saving her and her Shrewlets!
I am the inventor of the world’s smallest feeding tube intended for pinkie opossums. I’m also an avid Mouse Trap Monday fan and coming across this video is just heartwarming. It’s just awesome seeing all the species saved by so many dedicated rehab experts and released to the wild who would have otherwise met their certain demise. I just love that you are also an animal lover and did so well by this mother and gave her a safe place to birth and nurture her young. Safe from predation, inclement weather, difficulty finding food and water, and the like. I’m certain the survival rate for this litter was given a boost!
I love your content it's so informative and you are always so caring when talking about these animals!
Thanks for sharing this lovely little creature with us and keeping her safe while her babies grew up.
Shrew story. We used to keep bantam hens when I was growing up. One of our cats caught a shrew one time and was playing with it instead of eating it straight away. One of the hens came over and stole the shrew from the cat and quickly gobbled up the shrew because the other hens had noticed the activity and were running to try and catch it for themselves.
Very cool! You took care of them so they could have a shot out in the wild. Nice work, Shawn!
Oh how cool!!! I love your regular videos, but this is a fascinating change:)
Amazing! I never saw shrews up and close before! and the babies! thank you for doing this!!
Thank you for taking care of her and the fam’! It was cool to get to see them in this video.
I love your approaches to wild life and nature in these type of videos you do from time to time, keep it up!
Ive recently managed to get rid of 2 i had living in my kitchen. Hand caught as the live catch traps failed miserably and i was adamant i was not going to kill them. Fascinating animals
The Taming of the Shrew
Hey Shawn - cool video. I think more educational content about the animals like this would be a fun expansion for your channel! I like the pest control stuff too, but this was a nice change of pace
Kind & clever man . Bless you . I hope your invention takes off!
It is a very interesting creature, I did know very few about shrews before I watched your video. Thank you !
Amazing! I have wanted to learn more about shrews for sometime.
What a fun video. Thanks for creating it!
Years ago, I was watching the birds at my feeders. A goldfinch landed on the ground - right next to the entrance of a shrew tunnel. The shrew popped up, grabbed the goldfinch by the leg, and pulled it into the tunnel!
She is absolutely adorable! Hopefully she and her babies are well taken care of.
Found a shrew in my shower one night, my dog had been digging at one of our linen closets and I kept telling him there’s nothing in there but he just sat and stayed, it must have been the shrew and when we settled down for bed it ran out and made it way into our shower, I caught it and released it outside
Shrews are so fascinating. Thanks for this video.
Yeah if I recall correctly the American pygmy shrew is usually regarded as the second smallest extant mammal (though I think some other shrew species may be slightly shorter in length)? Anyway that mama shrew is very cute and I'm sure she was somewhat thankful she didn't have to go actively hunting for food for at least a few days after having babies lol
Thank you for the video and for taking care of them
Loved learned about shrewed by you! Your videos are always informative and entertaining
Fascinating indeed Shawn👍
Awwwww I'm a long time sub! This was amazing to watch!
Thank you for this very interesting video packed with knowledge!
Amazing video Shawn!!

Very interesting - Thanks Shawn! - Cheers!
Thank you for your video and for helping Mama shrew ❤
Great video! I like seeing you show us new animals and teach us about thrm and take care of them
Thank you for caring for her and the babies. Shrews stay outside and don't come in like mice. They are good little critters.
That was awesome. Thank you for sharing 😊
Shrews are very cute please be kind to them 💞
I'd watch an entire animal documentary shot, edited and narrated by you
Shrewlet!! How darn adorable is that?! 🥰
Thank you ..a great video !! I learned something today..
Good grief! The shrew had her babies frightened out of her. I'd rather deal with shrews than mice too. Great video. 😁
Bought your dizzy dunker, from amazon. I couldn't find Chinese made version there. I wouldn't have purchased it. I just set it up and baited it...
Kewl video, BTW. Thank you.
That was so cool, I love when you present less known species 💜
I never seen those before, they are cute, good you told about the poison, I will be holding on petting them.😊
Fun project! Thanks for sharing
I'd like to see more animal videos like this... fascinating and cute.
Poor little thing. Imagine how stressed she was feeling…😶
*“They generally have poor vision, but have an excellent sense of hearing and smell”*
They would make a great villain in *"Little Nightmares"* type indie games!
Thank you so much for shrewlet. Honestly.
A shrew got into my house once and I was wondering why my mom and grandma were screaming. They were trying to shoo it out of the house with a broom but it kept attacking and biting the broom. We were eventually able to push it outside but those little guys are fierce!!
That was a cool video.Thank you for sharing
Great video! Thanks for sharing
In swedish, shrews are called beak-mice.
When I was little I was told that cats actually don't like the taste of shrews very much, but would still hunt and kill them, and have a bite before realizing that it was a shrew and then spit it back out. I don't know if that's actually true of cats in general, or if it was just true for our cat, but it always sounded kinda funny to me anyway. As if the cat kept trying out shrews every time in the hopes that THIS time it had developed a taste for them.
In German we call them "pointy mice" lol
Fascinating! Shawn, I am subbed but have not gotten a notification from you in ages. I have to search for you.
In my bubble, we call the Shrew a "Snooter-Mouse" Or even "Noodle nosed floof"
Shawn's shrew zoo! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a great video, thanks. 😊
I gotta say this is a very wholesome video. We learned about shrews and the mom shrew. 😊
I love how shrews look kind of like mice that got stuck on fast forward. Always in a hurry.
Class behaviour Shawn. Much respect. :)
Thank you for saving them
