I totally get your enthusiasm (believe me, I am the same when discussing Hamilton) but Casper has interesting thoughts and we'd like to hear all that he wants to share. "I'm the damn fool that shot him" IS a really interesting choice but I think it's really cool! You could call it a spoiler because it does tell you what's gonna happen, but by giving you that information right off the bat, it creates insane tension through the whole story. Because you're introduced to them, see how they meet, how they progress, how the relationship changes, and through all of it, there's the tension of knowing you can't take ot for granted, because you know how it's gonna end, and that it's gonna be a proeminent part of the play. It makes you sit on the edge of your seat and keep this sense of unease whenever they share the stage. Exchanging susprise, for suspense.

      SPOILERS INBOUND:
You could say the same about the "i loved him" line, because it's said by all 3 of them. Of course this is for the stage production part of it, cause you might not be able to tell just in the audio.
All the other ones having double meaning, like Morius said, are way more subtle, because well... the actors are playing more the one character. But having Angelica, Eliza and Maria all singing "i loved him" i would say is quite the spoiler. Of course, i don't tgink many people remember it on the first watch, but yk.

Casper using Epic as perspective is really funny to me because I did the reverse with Epic. I view Odysseus and Eurylochus's relationship like Alexander and Burr's. Eurylochus is the voice of reason trying to keep Odysseus from getting himself killed with his insane ideas (harpooning a floating sky) in the same way that Burr is pragmatic and tries to keep Alexander from fucking around and finding out ("talk less, smile more", "You wanna get ahead? fools who run their mouths off wind up dead."), and the real Burr actually prevented a duel between Alexander and James Monroe.

I got into Hamilton through my younger sister. She was the one who was obsessed with Hamilton. She loved it and got really good at finding the bootlegs before it was on Disney+. She had this notebook where she wrote down everything she observed, specific costume changes or set changes, specific dance moves or how extras acted amongst each other. She would dedicate some watch through to just watch one character and note everything they did that she could find, sometimes this included the main cast but she loved the dedication to the extras as well. (She was 13/14 during all this, I don't think she is as enthralled anymore but it's what jumpstarted me into musical theatre seeing her passion for it.)

So you're literally seeing Hamilton step out of the narrative ether and *into* the scene when he chucks his white coat and puts on the brown one. Also interesting that our narrator doesn't get a storyteller costume - he's occupying his own weird in-scene and also fourth-wall-breaking space from the time the first note plays until the play ends.

I once overthought Hamilton's singing ability. To me, in the musical rapping feels more like its used for "professional" moments like when they debate, and plan. While singing is more used for emotional moments. The fact that the songs we only hear Hamilton sings are when he is going through extremely emotional shows how much he is better at the intellectual things than the emotional.

So, as a history buff and lover of musicals, this is an interesting musical for me. It has many great songs and I can't wait to see you cover them.
For those who might be interested in history, funny thing is that we don't actually know when Burr met Hamilton, but in history their relationship was kind of the opposite of in the musical. They first met and butted heads, but worked closer as time went on. A similar case to Laurens, Lafayette, and Mulligan. Hamilton didn't meet Lafayette or Laurens until the Revolution was well under way and he was serving in the army.
A point that isn't mentioned at all is that Mulligan is actually who Hamilton would have met *first* in New York, as the two lived together while Hamilton attended college and Mulligan probably never actually met either Laurens or Lafayette.
Of course they merged all this together for the musical as its necessary for Hamilton's story, but it's interesting to see the little parts of history that remain after the adaptation.

    • @elodiesimon8334
      @elodiesimon8334 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

Well, it's not sure Hamilton was 19. For the historians, when Hamilton arrived in New York, he probably lied about his age. So we don't know if he was 17 or 19. Therefore, we don't know the age of Hamilton when he died ; 47 or 49.
Fun fact : the musical have 47 songs !

Didn't expect you start this reaction series today, a very nice surprise for me there! So excited for Hamilton, as I am one of the people who commented it under your post for musical monday.
Also want to let you know that there are a few Hamilton songs in an official German translation available on TH-cam, should you ever be interested in hearing them in another language. They actually translated the whole musical and it premiered in Hamburg in 2022, but unfortunately it wasn’t very successfull, so only a few songs got official releases. (I actually watched the musical in German and thought the translation worked really well)
Again, very excited for this reaction series here!

ok hear me out, but the whole revealing important plot points in the first song is a parallel to The Room Where It Happens.
In The Room Where It Happens, Burr reveals the bare bones of the dinner, and then more details are revealed later in the song, which is exactly what happens in the first song. Burr reveals that he shot Hamilton, and as the show progresses, we see how it happens - we get more details.

Hi I just to say my take on the line 'Waiting in the wings, for you' has always been from the fact that Hamilton was an Immigrant therefore America was waiting in the wings for him to arrive, as it was always a possible dream for him to even get there given his family status at the time. I also get your reference to the 'wings' on stage as I have been involved with Theatre since a young age

There's a website that has basically every American historical document archived, and I've read some of what Alexander wrote, and it felt super weird at first, because since he was so good with words, I forgot that literacy was basically nonexistent back then. He misspelled a lot of (in my opinion easy) words.

Huh I never thought of “wings” as the sides of the stage. I always interpreted that as like the wings of a building like the White House having different wings. That something much bigger than him was waiting for him. I also felt wings was also used as a form of sidelines which is starting to make so much more sense that the context was actually stage wings. I think it shows how although Hamilton is a founding father that does get some attention he somewhat always ends up being the guy backing others or advising others rather than forging a new nation

I recommend to anyone who likes this musical and wants a deeper look into the Hamilton life to take a look at the book "My Dear Hamilton" by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie. Its a book that follows Eliza rather than Alexander, but it still offers a lot in terms of getting more story and figuring out where the musical and history differ. Its a historical fiction piece, so it is told from her POV but is research based and very powerful
