Yeah, I was getting emails on my college email about remote jobs and a sign on bonus, but the pay didn't add up and I was getting multiple in a month. The wording was also off so I looked at who it was from and they were using student emails and alumni emails. I looked up the alumni on LinkedIn and they didn't even work for the company that emailed me.

I have never worked a remote job where the company sends you a check to buy equipment or reimburse you. Back in the early 2000s, you had to already have a desktop with a landline. You even had to get your own headphones, and they didn't reimburse you. Now, every company I have done remote work for will send you all of the equipment. Headphones, laptops, and screens all you need is to have high-speed internet. Never as a recruiter recruiting for remote jobs and worked remotely, got reimbursed, or received a check to buy equipment. I wanted a 2nd screen, and my company sent it.

      4) The money leaves your account and enters theirs when you buy the PC

@@sierrasmith8722 the scammer will normally ask the scammed person to send the rest of what was sent back to the "company" OR the scammer gives a site to purchase things from that are "supplied" (lot of times never come through) and the money from that comes from the scammed person's bank account as the fraudulent payment fails forcing the money to come out of the bank... The bank then forces the scammed person to pay back what the bank sent out.

Don't let them make you buy anything, even on their card. Tell them what you need (I would personally go the "minimum" route but you do you) and have them ship it to you.
That's how my workplace did it. And check your local laws about remote work if they don't want to provide any office materials. Many places have laws that depending on your specific employment details(here, words are important. "Remote" can mean something different than "home office"), that your employer HAS to provide everything you need for your job, even a desk and chair if needed.
And don't ever take a pay cut for working remotely. Just felt the need to add that.

Do a video chat with the employer. Scammer won't let you see their face and rarely will talk to you over the phone to hear their voice. Ask for a badge photo. If you receive an interview, call the company directly and ask if that is an employee with their company and verify their phone number through the company directly. You don't need to tell them your name, just that you're an applicant calling to verify the validity of the person you spoke with. Most assistants you speak to will completely understand and give you the details they can. Also watch the times you're contacted and be sure they're during business hours. I had a scammer contacting me until 11pm some nights claiming they were 2nd shift - hiring managers don't work that late.

I had this happen to me about 4 years ago, I had an interview for a remote job and they said they would send me a check. Fortunately, alarms started going off so I googled and found out about these scams. Turns out the scammer actually got my email from a reputable employment website.

My nephew's former wife was all in to do this. He tried to explain to her that this was a scam but she was indignant that it could possibly be. Thankfully, he talked her out of it before she took on any financial obligations but she was totally ready to go for it.

This happened to my husband before we met! He cashed the check and bought some supplies, and ended up being scammed out of almost $4000

Stupidly fell for one of these myself. Even the police were impressed at the level of detail they went to

Bro this happened to me. Never sent the order through (the check they gave me was also not enough to play for everything they had listed), reported it to the sam place, and took a huge blow to my self esteem.

Almost happened to me but I checked with HR Dept of the company that was supposedly hiring me and they confirmed they had no such employee and no such job available. Always check people!
