My buddy said, "go to a pet store and be ready to be wowed" between the different types of rocks and sand you can get for fishtanks to the fake terrain for tanks its cheap and amazing

I've always preferred real sand. You can buy sacks of varying granularity to build up the look of any terrain. Clay rich soil also works well for building rocky walls and mini cliffs. I found ready-mixed texture paint to be slower and less controllable though. Ready a bunch of bases in a box, pour sand over them and you get a nice random but evenly covered base texture. Glue again and pour some finer sand. You can do as many as you like at once that way.

Using “Clay rich soil” to build walls and cliffs is wild 😂

I’ve always preferred real stuff. Great video. Thanks for what you do friend!

texture paint is especially useful when texturing a base that has multiple figures on it, such as Warmaster, where you can't easily get between their legs once the figures are painted and glued to the base.

can you use real snow instead of snow texture paint?

Thanks for the info in here! I have never thought about using a wash on my base, but now I need to try it.
I'm that weird person that puts down a layer of texture paint then glues sand, flock and other things on top to provide a semi-natural feel.

I've only been painting and modeling for about a year and a half, but I prefer the texture paint. I started out using real stuff for my bases and only just recently picked up some texture paint. It looks great and easy to work with. I'm using Vallejo texture paint, same size as AK and slightly cheaper I believe. Either way, both techniques look great.

They are both cool but I like the sand and with the glue I find it just has a better looking finish on the side of the base.

Team Sand. I never understood texture paint, but obviously some people love it. Looks like paint with cornstarch, just costs more.

The contrast paints comparison is more than correct since I generally use texture paint to save some time.

Hey this a nice video. I have a question. I'm starting to customize bases and I wonder what's the prior preparation for the base? Is it requiered to sanding the base or use any kind of spray beforehand?

I'm glad you liked the video! I don't do any preparation at all, I just glue everything onto it that I need to it and prime it before painting it.

Great video! Really gets me thinking about how to do bases differently, I had always just left the sand unpainted and based after I was done with the model. Painting the bases as well makes much more sense lol 😆

Thanks Proxy! There is a line of "base ready products" sold by Geek gaming scenic that makes you skip the step of painting your bases, which I've been told they work very well! I'm not interested in using them at the moment, since I prefer to paint my bases, but I don't rule out using them in the future!
