At first, I wanted to be salty because of your results... but you are such a likeable person. Congratulations, my dude -- you clearly worked really hard to get where you are. I sincerely wish you all the best in college and beyond.
Wait, this gave me hope that grades and SAT/ACT scores do not matter that much in your admission decision! Admissions are done very holistically and they generally admit you as a person in whole and not just grades. I mean all the scientists weren't toppers. They are failed miserably but aced their career in their own field of interest. So, 2023 group we all got this! Don't loose hope! ❤️ You never know what is waiting for you in the surprise box✨
My problem is, I have really good scores and grades, but have not had opportunities for ECs much at all, so I feel the only way I can tell my story is through the essays.
@@erikumble yes! Due to the pandemic most of us couldn't participate in any kind of extracurricular activities. Myself dint participate in any in complete 2 years. But I do have some extracurriculars which I did before the pandemic. And essays are a great way to project yourself to the admissions committee. You have to work hard on those essays. Just be genuine and realistic about your life. They would love it! We got this! ❤️
this is so realistic thank you so much because everyone on youtube is a total robot and it makes it hard to watch these videos so thank you for being honest and humble! good luck at mit!!
I think the fact you framed yourself as a specialist in environmental science really helped. That's also maybe the reason the 2 in Chem didn't matter so much. Colleges tend to not look for all-around good students. They want academic diversity by looking for students who show a strong interest and activity in a single subject.
Colleges definitely care about your ability to succeed in more than one area. He kind of said it, but being an “all around good student” is more like the bare minimum for highly selective schools. Colleges want people who can become leaders in their field, and be famous and successful alumni in the future. He was 0.03 points away from a 4.0. He’s not just a specialist. He proved that he can succeed anywhere, but he thrives in one subject. I’m assuming your 2 in chem was amongst a generally good academic record, and that you were doing ok in classes outside of your chosen subject. Highly selective colleges wouldn’t take someone who’s really good at one thing and garbage at everything else, unless they’re _uniquely_ good at it, which most high schoolers aren’t.
@@jessicaHHHHHH by uniquely good at it, do u mean they can succeed at everything else but they especially put in effort to further do that one thing outside the classroom? something like that?
Yas. When Ivy schools offered that SAT and ACT scores are no longer required, I took FULL advantage of that. My ACT score was 29 so I definitely didn't want to send that. I did NOT take the SAT because I have a hatred for CollegeBoard. With these criteria missing, I was able to juxtapose myself with really good AP scores and grades, and that's the story of my Princeton application journey. You don't have to be perfect or anywhere near that for these schools, just prove that you're really good at some things and express your ambitions at these Ivy Leagues😊
So are they of no use anymore? So do you think it’s a waste of taking the SAT or ACT? I guess I’ll,take it once and if I get a low score I’ll just not focus on it
@Knowledge God Well, I wouldn't say that they completely don't matter, but if you're planning on attending a top IVY league school in the US, you need to have something else besides grades. Since you're pretty intelligent, participating in competition related to your interest would be good. dw, you got a good chance, find good colleges to apply and you'll get in.
This is quite inspiring. I always MIT only take gold medalist in Olympia (William Lin TH-camr), or ppl doing research with famous professor etc. But it shows caring on what you do is important, even just influencing your local community. I also sucked at sat but never knew about act in my high school days.. sad. Your leadership is quite impressive too
Yeah, colleges want a diverse group of students, so they want people who have all sorts of experiences. But whether you choose to compete in academic competitions or impact your community through leadership, colleges want to see your passion and genuine interest in whatever you choose to do.
in regards to the ACT/SAT, i totally agree that they’re not going to be your everything when applying to college, which is why i didn’t buy any study materials. i got a 32 by using online practice tests from previous years and treating them like a real test, and then going over and reviewing questions i missed to think about them in a different way. the more you do it, the more familiar you‘ll be with the test itself and how to solve different types of problems without needing to spend your money on practice books you’ll never open again
Hey, did u study for the sat only using free online resources? I know that it was some time ago but if it's okay can you share these resources with me?
You really gave me hope on my college application! I thought getting into ives was all about being a genius, winning national or international olympiad awards.. When in reality it’s also about just being yourself and do what you like. Thank you!!

Try to find extracurriculars outside of school like maybe join a online club/organization as a high schooler, you can also publish your own research in a journal that takes submissions from high schoolers, you can also apply for online competitions where you just submit a video or power point/word document you can also volunteer!
everyone: talking about different stats and other things that help in high school and then me: staring at the proof album in the background throughout the entire video 😂 jokes aside thank you so much Nathan for the great video!! 😁😁😁
You must have cooked up hard on your essays. Pretty rare to see low AP scores and ACT accepted to MIT. Even though AP scores don't count for much, they are significant of how rigorous your school was and considering you had a high GPA but like a 2 on AP Chem, kinda screams grade inflation. MIT probably gonna be hella hard man, best of luck. Glad to see some people that aren't complete robots getting in.
Weighed gpa matters more, I think your gpa is out of a 5 scale - your extracurriculars are super impressive, it’s extensive- during last year (freshman year) I only focused on my grades, I am the salutatorian for now but honestly, I don’t feel like colleges would care much - doing extracurriculars related to your major would be the most beneficial
Im the total opposite of you in AP chem. Took it senior year and my final grade was 73, but I got a 5. My teacher always looked for reasons to take points of lol.
hellloo can u plss make a vid abt ur essays 😭😭😭😭 im a freshmen in high and i really wanna know how to write a essay so tht i can try my best ... my dream is to get into mit thankuuu
Hey, thank you for such an amazing video! I have a question though. What would you recommend I do as EC's if I'm planning to do Biochemistry or biotechnology in uni? To be honest, I have a lot of leadership, debates, sports and MUN's but I don't have anything that directly relates to what I'm planning to pursue. It kinda worries me which is why I need some help. Thanks once again.
I think your ECs should have at least science-related activities that can potentially match to your passion because in my belief, I took a lot of ECs related to computer science (yeah coz that's what I planned to major it), but only that I did, I also involved in different fields such as environmentalism clubs, activism councils, MUN's, acting, and many more. Can I ask as well that you will be applying this fall of 2023 as an undergraduate?
Hey, got any advice for someone low income and in a rural area? I'm a junior now and previously, I kind of avoided anything college admissions-related since I felt I wasn't good enough. They have 8 APs that are available and I've taken 5 of them and there isn't much EC-wise since my parents have to save gas money. Now I'm seeing these city people with CRAZY stats and I only heard that the PSATs existed literally 2 days before I took it. I did pretty damn good, my score was like 1360 but now I'm realizing if I had the opportunity to actually study I could have maybe gotten a scholarship. Unhinged rant, sorry. I'm just kind of sad right now. :(( edit: 9:56 okay, good edit^2: okay i feel underaccomplished rip me. maybe i'll get into UC merced i hope
Hey! I’m a rising sophomore (well, almost haha) and I was wondering - I go to a school that doesn’t offer AP (independent curriculum because we’re quirky) and I was wondering if it’d be impressive if I took maybe like 5-7 APs?
I have a quick question. I have a lot of ECs and stats similar to Nathan and I am an upcoming sophomore but I was in a lot of clubs in freshman year but as time went, somethings happened and I wasn't that much of a member anymore in the clubs. Since I'm not as active, I cannot apply for any officer positions currently but I am planning to in sophomore year and do better. Would that still be okay if I am not an officer right at the beginning of sophomore year?
DId you decide what school you are going to go to?? So curious... Congratulations on your achievements. You did very well throughout high school and it has paid off :)
I’m a junior this year and I spent the whole summer prepping for SAT. I got it back like 3 weeks ago and it’s a 1460. Im so irritated about the score but idk what I’m supposed to do about it. I got a 790 on math and 670 on English. Any suggestion? It still so annoying that spending the entire summer prepping for sat English got me up 20 points. I’m not sure what else I have that helps me stand out in college either. I play hockey, but I’m not super good (it’s a time commitment). I play JV Tennis. I’m in 2-3 clubs but I’m not the leader of any club. I’m taking AP Calc BC, Ap physics 1, and AP CSA this year, and the highest offered classes for everything except English (there’s no history APs at my school, and I’m wondering if selfstudying will do anything). I didn’t do anything that stood out this summer and I’m worried I won’t get into a good college. I’m not social or outgoing enough to have opportunities and I don’t seek them out for fear of rejection. What do I do?
Couple of advices: 1. The cracking sat book that was shown in the video really helps. The book is all about test taking skills 2. Kahn academy has the best sat prep material. They show the questions you got wrong and links to their videos to improve the concepts related to the questions you got wrong. 3. Improving testing score is a rather simple process. Do the sample test. Check the answers. Really think about why you did not get the answer. If you have no idea, review related materials. Then go back to the questions and see if you can see the answer. Repeat this process over and over. Collect all the questions you got wrong, and review those questions again during the last week before the test. 4. If your test score is lower than your practice test so much, then you might want to consult doctors on test anxiety. Some people do have anxiety on the important days. Good luck.
this is sort of my problem, what ive learned is that ecs are much more important than i anticipated and my school doesnt have alot of those, what do you advise me to do?
y'all looking at how to get into top school as well I am but can we appreciate that he has a Proof ALBUM IN THE BACK LIKE LET"S GOOO (*cough cough*) LET'S GETTTT ITTTT
In my school I’m only offered like 3 aps, for junior and senior years and I have to choose between some of them and don’t have the full freedom of choice. My grades have been terrible so far. This is currently my first sophomore year and I had an average of 3.8 gpa on my freshman year, so I wasn’t as properly equipped as you are, and my school does not offer any ECs that I can choose from. I really want to be in the Ivy League and make my parents proud, but don’t know where to go from here, I know you have to manage your life and I really want to say congrats on your college apps 🎉! If you think you can help me please tell me in the comments
Actually, it’s an opportunity that your school doesn’t have many ECs, you could try creating a club in an area that you’re passionate in. Casual participation in a lot of scattered ECs isn’t what colleges want anyway, they want to see commitment and depth in your activities. You could try looking for internships and programs in your community as well. You’re a sophomore, you still have time to dive into your interests and showcase that to colleges. Just don’t stress yourself out too much, it may seem like ivys are the end goal, but you can be successful in the future and make your parents proud without them. I wish you luck!
@@jenerak.yuzernaim2302 I’m already in a scholarship program in my country, but I still don’t have any job or occupation that I want to pursue, which is also a problem

Try to find extracurriculars outside of school like maybe join a online club/organization as a high schooler, you can also publish your own research in a journal that takes submissions from high schoolers, you can also apply for online competitions where you just submit a video or power point/word document you can also volunteer!
everyone: talking about different stats and other things that help in high school
and then me: staring at the proof album in the background throughout the entire video 😂
jokes aside thank you so much Nathan for the great video!! 😁😁😁
Thank you so much. Your video was really inspirational.
Weighed gpa matters more, I think your gpa is out of a 5 scale - your extracurriculars are super impressive, it’s extensive- during last year (freshman year) I only focused on my grades, I am the salutatorian for now but honestly, I don’t feel like colleges would care much - doing extracurriculars related to your major would be the most beneficial
this vid is so real omg
congratulations! you seem so cooooolllll
Really good job, thanks for showing us we have a chance. And we dont need to be a robot.
Thank you for giving me the courage to try to apply for M.I.T.
Ahahah I have the sat blackbook! Congrats on your acceptances!
I'm in MOSTEC this year, and I almost jumped out of my skin hearing you mention it lol
Switch in the background. Nice!!
very informative, much appreciated
i love the bts album in the back!
Great video! I am now wondering about your essays and recommendation letters.
This is so useful thank you so much
Im the total opposite of you in AP chem. Took it senior year and my final grade was 73, but I got a 5. My teacher always looked for reasons to take points of lol.
thank you sm for sharing your advice!!! do you maybe have any advice for the common app personal statement?
You are life saviour!!!!!
peep the itzy album in the back👀

I am in MOSTEC (now its called MITES) right now and I took Sustainable Design too! Who taught it when you were there?
Can you go more into depth about the environmental club at school? I want to start one and have some ideas (kind of) but could use some advice
Sameee
Thanks this helps so much mit is my dream
How about a video on how you made your choice on where to go?
Oh yeah correction *Not only that I did
How to apply to MIT and Stanford University for Indian students who wants to study MS ??
Hey! Can you put the link for the scholarships you applied for? Your girl needs help 😭
u got into mit princeton upenn and so many other schools? goated!
edit: 9:56 okay, good
edit^2: okay i feel underaccomplished rip me. maybe i'll get into UC merced i hope
try doing SAT maybe or applying financial aid to some schools
Did you submit your research paper to them ?
Hey! I’m a rising sophomore (well, almost haha) and I was wondering - I go to a school that doesn’t offer AP (independent curriculum because we’re quirky) and I was wondering if it’d be impressive if I took maybe like 5-7 APs?
Yeah as long as you take AP’s that fit your interests/challenge yourself with what’s available for you
I love this man
Australia’s education system is so much simpler and better than the ones in other countries it’s insane.
yet people over there do poorer in academics than the ones who live in Asian countries
Thank you so much, this such a helpful video! Hope you make a similar one for college essays 🤍 & best of luck for your journey at MIT
Wait for GPA uw, even if u get an A- its still a 4.0?
Couple of advices:
1. The cracking sat book that was shown in the video really helps. The book is all about test taking skills
Good luck.
I really cant say anything. Math is very easy but English is hard. Either go again or hope to get lucky
Thank you so much for this! Also how do I get involved with extracurriculars activities like these I am currently a Junior!🙌🏽🤗
this is sort of my problem, what ive learned is that ecs are much more important than i anticipated and my school doesnt have alot of those, what do you advise me to do?
amazing! Did you Submit any portfolio
y'all looking at how to get into top school as well I am but can we appreciate that he has a Proof ALBUM IN THE BACK LIKE LET"S GOOO (*cough cough*) LET'S GETTTT ITTTT
Any advice or info on grades for those, like myself, whose high school didn’t offer AP?
How you presented your ACT Black Book had me screaming in laughter or is it just me
question did you apply Early decision or early action anywhere?
I am in 9th grade. But I am from India. Where and how do I take the act and sat exam? Can I take it online? If so, could you suggest some websites?
I know a really good professor who teacher sat & act courses pretty well! His students have amazing scores too! If u want I could give u his contacts
