    I had to drop about 10 trees but it was worth it. There are two more left to drop. Both dying as were most of the other ones I had dropped. However, we in this area of MI were only supposed to get 170 Mbps max, but we've downloaded things at just over 300mbps at times. It's worth it when you live in the country imo. Best service we've ever had.

    Thanks for the very informative video. I live in the Philippines and the tree line surrounding my house is quite similar to your own location except all the trees nearby to me are coconut trees. I have down and up speeds roughly the same as yours before you installed Starlink so when the service comes available here I will definitely be using it. 🙏

    Your area looks like mine, I'm in rural West Virginia, down in a valley wedged between two hills (one hill on the all-important Northern direction) with trees all around.) When I first installed Starlink, I was getting drops every few minutes, which I didn't notice for general internet surfing, but caused buffering on Netflix and the like. However, it's gotten much better as they've launched more satellites. Sticking it on a ten-foot roof mast also did wonders, it didn't seem like it would have put it over most of the treetops, but it must have been just enough to knock the dropoffs down considerably.

    Thank you so much, much better video than others about placement and tree coverage. East texas here and can't wait, have some tall pines here but found a spot if the app is accurate. I really don't like the fact the cable is integrated into the dish. I have never seen a cable last a long time yet on a roof.

    I found that anchoring the cable with the supplied clips squashes the cable. I used electrical staples and loosely ran the cable thru them. I also used a rope to run a path from the dish to the house and used tye wraps to secure the cable to the house with putting any strain to the cable .had fun figuring this out

    I have a suggestion on how to take the worry out of the cable from the Dishy to the house. Have you thought about running the entire system from your garage? That would be your Starlink system. Then run/bury a single strand of fiber optics from the garage to the house in conduit. Yes I know Fiber Optics. Expensive! It's not that pricey. You can purchase single strand fiber optics pre-made in various lengths that would run from your Starlink system in the shed to wherever you needed in the house to a Wifi router to take care of your internet needs in the house and the Starlink system would service your needs in the shed. You would have to purchase the appropriate transponder to covert electrical to light for the optics at each end of the fiber. Surprisingly the whole setup is not that expensive. I did this at my house to get internet to my shop and the whole thing was if I remember correctly under $200.00. I purchased 150 yards of fiber the two transponders off of Amazon and I have been very satisfied with the results. Anyway just a suggestion. thank for the video.

    It looks like you could easily install a wireless bridge between your house and out-building. I did something similar between my house and shop. Cost was around $200. Speed is about 400 Mbps. You are likely to wind up with blown Ethernet ports on your equipment with a cable running between two buildings, due to lightning strikes in the immediate area.

    We closed on our property 1 July. It’s 8 acres with half cleared and half wooded.
    There is already a direct tv dish in the field pointing across the open area. So I was hopeful.
    I opened the Starlink app yesterday and of course it has to point back towards the house and all the trees! I have to walk halfway across the field to get the trees out of view but then I am 200ft from my house!
    Not sure what to do now, the other satellite internet providers are terrible!

      You can find POE extenders on Google (they run about $90 for an outdoor rated extender) along with additional Ethernet cable. Make sure the cable is rated for outdoor use also. Ethernet cable is only effective up to 300 feet total, so as long as your total run between the dish and WiFi router is under that length you are good. Good Luck!

I have some of the same challenges with trees and finding a clear area for the dish on the property. Do you know if the starlink cable can be extended if 100ft isn't long enough? • @doingstuffonvideo5943

      Yes. there are POE extenders you can find, if you Google them. They run about $90, a viewer posted below, you need to make sure it is rated at 100 watts, to power the Dishy. You will want to buy POE extender that are water proof and when you buy additional cable make sure you get one rated for outside with UV protection. Your total length of cable from the Dishy to the router will need to be less than 328 feet or it will loose its effectiveness

      @@doingstuffonvideo5943 Thanks for the response. Yeah they're all outdoor rated and you would have to have both sides of the link outside your buildings and able to see each other with decent line of site. It works just like a wireless ethernet cable. Ubiquiti makes all sorts of different point-to-point links. I just ran an ethernet line to the exterior of the barn through a soffit and pointed them at each other. Download their app on your cell phone and when you turn each side of the link on it will put out a wifi signal for the first 5 minutes or so you can connect to and configure. They have a few setup videos if you're ever interested. Best of luck!

      They make a weather proof power-over-internet (POE) connector to attach two ethernet cables together, they run about $90. You also need to get at least 100' of additional cable to make the run, make sure it is rated for outdoor use. You could bury the cable to span the distance, but that is a lot of digging without a trenching tool, I recommend putting it in conduit if you bury it to add protection. I don't recommend securing it to trees to span the distance, remember trees move and the would put a strain on the cable and eventually break it. I would invest in some type of tall polls in the ground to secure it to. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

      I signed up and gave my deposit in December and was notified mid April it was a go. I received the dish around the first of May.

      Agreed, I am just taking the cheap way out at the moment. I would need at least a 30' tower, at that would run $600-$750 plus the cost to install it.

    I'm a little confused, how can you use less than 100 ft of cable, no matter how far you put your dish it's still going to be 100ft of cable between point A and B. Unless you cut the cable. Are you able to extend the cable?

    • @doingstuffonvideo5943
      @doingstuffonvideo5943  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You cannot use less than 100 feet of cable. I had a hard time finding anyone showing how they completed long runs between the dish and power block. Most everything I saw online was from the dish directly into the house with very short runs before it entered a structure. I was just trying to show an option if someone ran across a similar challenge. You can go longer but you need to get a POE extender and additional cable. POE's extenders run around $90.00

      @@doingstuffonvideo5943 that's my problem. I'm about 160ft from open sky and can't find any videos on someone actually extending the cable.

      @@621norby POE Extenders are used quit often in the technology world, and they do make them water proof for outdoor use. If you Google POE extender you will see a lot of options. Simple to use. When you buy additional cable, you will want to make sure it is rated for outside use with UV protection.

      It's easier if you extend after the power brick. It is not a common PoE injector. It needs to power dishy for over 100 Watts. You can do whatever as standard Ethernet after the power brick from the white port.

    • @doingstuffonvideo5943
      @doingstuffonvideo5943  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@motofan16 Great point on the POE injector, it needs to be rated for the correct wattage. I think the issue is the cable is hard wired into the dishy and the 100' line runs out before 621norby can get it to the power block, indoors and protected.

      I still have some interference. I am going to take out a couple of my closer in trees to help improve the issue, I hope. I will always have trees showing on the lower edge of my Starlink App when I check for obstructions, but so far I have had minimal issues.
      Going higher seems to be the only option to improve your service, if that even is an option for you.

      It actually been better than I have expected. In a 24 hour day I have about 10-15 minutes of downtime due to some type of obstruction. On a windy day with the trees moving, maybe a little more. The analytics tool on the phone app does a good job of tracking it. I also have some additional downtime due to no satellite coverage, but that is only going to better over time. On a given day I am probably down 20 minutes, and each duration is a minute max, with most lasting only 15-20 seconds.
