    sir in NCERT its given that esters can be hydrogenated using special catalysts ( for commercial preparation of alcohols) , so what should we do if it comes in ADV/MAINS.
    exact lines of ncert:
    However, LiAlH4
    is an expensive reagent, and therefore, used
    for preparing special chemicals only. Commercially, acids are
    reduced to alcohols by converting them to the esters (Section
    11.4.4), followed by their reduction using hydrogen in the
    presence of catalyst (catalytic hydrogenation).

    • @shishirmit
      @shishirmit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Esters are much more difficult to reduce. In presence of other functional groups like Alkenes, aldehydes or ketones, It is possible to reduce these functional groups without reducing the Ester. Moreover, in probably 2010, IIT-JEE had asked a similar question in which Ester was not reduced while the others were.

      They do reduce but at a very high temperature. In fact carboxyacids, anhydrides, haloalkanes, benzene, amides all reduce at high temperature.

      Good. very true.
      Amongst Alkyl halides, fluorides and chlorides are not reduced, bromides with difficulty, iodides more easily.... Acyl halides were easily reduced...the list goes on. Cyclopropane even open the ring at 100oC, cyclobutane at abt 200 deg C...we can add hundreds
      Rather than being exhaustive, aim here was to be useful in exams. But you enthusiasm is appreciable.

      This re agent is used in general for hydrogenation only.
      Probably you are confused by one more reaction. If cyclohexadiene Vapours are heated with this reagent, they form benzene. This is dehydrogenation reaction. The driving force for this reaction is aromatic city of benzene. Hydrogen gas liberated is removed by absorption with this catalyst. Note that it is possible only at a high temperature and low pressures. If you increase the pressure, reverse reaction will happen.
