I understand (and can do) a lot of various metalworking processes like welding, machining, etc. But sheet metal stretching/shrinking/forming remains black magic to me. Fascinating to watch.
I'll just stretch this bit, shrink this bit, hit this bit..... Ian ends up with a beautiful part, I'd end up with a warped bit of scrap metal. Kneels in the presence of a true metal whisperer 🙂
I love watching this! I also follow a classic car restorer (Elin Yakov - 'Rusty Beauties') who is also in Canada, working on British machines, and also doing clever things with sheet metalworking tools!

Just amazed by the thousands of man-hours that went into construction of an aircraft that probably had a useful life of less than a 100. Of course, the factory was stamping out complex parts like cookies; but it is still no less amazing!
I wouldn't insult anyone by donating as little as $5, but with the exchange rate in South Africa, I would have to be wealthy to donate a proper amount, say$100. That would be in the region or R1700...Too much for me! So I suppose watch the interesting extra content is out of the question for me! Damn! My favourite WW2 aircraft!
Hi Ian From one video presenter to another l would say this new episode is your finest to date, you seem to have hit on the perfect formula of being informative but not over complicating the delivery of all the technical jargon so everyone watching can follow and understand the progress being made. Also not only do you talk about what's coming up in the episode you then actually get on and very skilfully do it. If l can ask you one Hawker Typhoon related question please? Did each Hawker Typhoon have a Serial Number Logcard to record an individual aircrafts movement? This has been put to me in a comment made on my recent Mystery SERCK Hawker Typhoon video, as a possible way of identifying the Typhoon shown in the video. The comment also states that the RAF Museum may hold these logcards in their possession. Typhoon Expert Chris Thomas has suggested the SERCK Typhoon is a 1B with a serial number in the late R or DN series, so it would be those logcards (if indeed they do exist) that would need cross referencing with a Typhoon being sent for display at the SERCK Birmingham factory...your thoughts? Thanks Gary! Typhoons did have a movement card (I am not overly familiar with the form numbers here), I would be very surprised if it would have been noted on loan for the Serck day though, typical movements were major repairs and delivery to new units etc. Stranger things have happened though! ~Ian

Good to know that there is/was such a thing as a movement card for each aircraft and where l agree its unlikly to record a Typhoon being loaned to Serck, Chris Thomas has said that the Serck Typhoon shows signs of going to Hawkers for repair, as the chin radiator housing has a different camouflage demarcation line to the standard factory applied finish that would go under the air scoop sonthere is still hope. l will get in touch with my contact at the RAF museum now then. Would your contact at the Gloucester Air Museum who have a Typhoon project on the go have any movement cards also? Thanks again. The Sabre will certainly take up a series of episodes and updates. Plans are being made and while that is being done primary effort is being put towards the airframe. ~Ian
@@TyphoonLegacyCoLtd So at the moment there is the RB396 Typhoon project in the UK with their Cranfield acquired Sabre. Kermit weeks has at least 2 if not 3 sabres down in Florida but the rebuild of his Tempest V seems to have stopped when his man Andy Salter retired literally few years ago. And then there are the Sabres that you have acquired.. Is there going to be some collaboration on engine builds as i assume everybody is keen to have a functional engine and some spares and nobody has built a running sabre for some time. Cheers
@@simonpayne8252 I know Ian has the NZ museum engine with cut out's (as it was a display piece), so maybe there is the opportunity for some interaction around the whole pieces that Ian needs for his project. But having said that, I guess it depends on what developmental stage the other engines are at. There could be incompatibilities depending on the manufacturing date??? The Hawker Typhoon RB396 being restored in the Aircraft Restoration Company's Hanger (ARCo), has a Napier Sabre Mk.IIa engine, gifted by the Cranfield Institute of Technology to the Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group (HTPG), charity organisation. It is very good condition and maybe they will be able to assist Ian as well. But I don't know what version Ian has. Kermit Weeks just released a video where a company just did a laser scan of a wing root section on his Seversky P-35a. If that laser to digital scan technology could be used on the Napier Sabre Engine, that would be a game changer. Of course, it all costs money and time.

You are correct my friend, 235 was sliding hood from new. She was also a small tailplane 3 blade prop machine right out of the box, so it is an ideal example for us to look at when we get stumped! ~Ian
There is also Kermit weeks tempest mk V to refer to if need be. It is just sitting there semi naked along with some sabres. Would make for a good kermie cam visit if nothing else.
Production machines used stamped parts. With stamping it takes much more effort to create the tooling, but one set of tooling can produce hundreds or thousands of parts. ~Ian

Tricky questions really, (1) there are neither complete factory drawings or complete airframe parts availability; this makes a timeline for airworthiness nearly impossible regardless of funds. I always tell people that she will fly in 20 years, please be patient, every effort is going into this goal. (2) I am hoping something can be worked to keep it local (Vancouver Island), however the end goal is that JP843 will forever stay in Canada; preferably B.C. (3) JP843 will be painted exactly as JP843 was displayed in our available images, there is a possibility of other schemes in the future, but we must pay respect to Peter Price! ~Ian
There is only one complete surviving example of a Typhoon in the world, that is MN235 in Hendon. There are several surviving serial numbers, collections and recoveries; JP843 is one of them. ~Ian
Its going to be the only typhoon to ever conform to blueprint.
