    What are your impressions of Revell's releases for 2024? Which kits do you think you will buy, and are there any stand-out hits you think they'll have? Let me know in the comments below!

      Well if I could there are quite a few kits I would like to get from them.i just wish I had the money to buy,but if I could the 350 sub that is the platinum Revell does have good details with there platinum series.also would not mind the b 25 h if it is newer then the older monogram molds......

      I'm sorry to say, but nothing I've seen here really tickles my fancy. Which is a shame, since I've built a lot of Revell kits (and Airfix) as a kid in the seventies. But after discovering and falling in love with 1/35 scale Tamiya kits in 1980, I haven't touched neither of them anymore 😞Alex, which is your favorite Revell kit in 1/35 AFV?

    • @MannsModelMoments
      @MannsModelMoments  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MikeUSA67 To be honest, I've never made a 1/35th AFV tooled by Revell - the only one I even have from them is the Bedford QL which is an old Peerless Max kit. Their 1/72nd armour from the mid 1990s is excellent, so I'm hoping that Jaguar 1 in 35th is of the same quality!

      Yeah I missed the MOnogram kit when doing my research (Sclaemates being pernickety about how you format things!)...it does seem more likely it's the mOnogram kit, which is a shame because a Revell/Tamiya association would have been interesting!

      @@MannsModelMoments Yup that's definitely the old monogram kit , I( built it during lockdown and it's a challenging but not impossible kit . The old revell boxing used to have decals for two captured examples including a british marked one that crashed near Farnborough killing the pilot and a headmaster of a local school , whose house it crashed into while avoiding hitting the school. The crash was caused by the rear engine catching fire and burning through the control cables.

      it certainly is the Monogram... those weird squashed figures are a dead giveaway. It's not a bad kit per se but it certainly shows its age. Could definitely be bashed into a very nice model

    22:30 The 77 Chevy Street Pickup is 1/25 Scale. It's the 2wd version the was originally issued in Black, it was also yellow and again in white and came with a race boat. The 1/24 version one you're thinking of is the Monogram one that is a 4x4.

  • @arrrgee
    @arrrgee 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    My understanding of the way Revell approaches their car kits is that in the US they used the 1/25 scale for a long time and in Europe and Japan they use 1/24.
    Because of this and the fact that they inherited the Monogram range of vehicle toolings which are mostly 1/25 scale, when they do new US subject vehicles they stick to the 1/25 scale as it's likely to appeal more in the US market as it would fit in with collections that modellers in the US already have.
    As for us in Europe we just put up with having 1/24 and 1/25 kits made along side.
    The thing is they are close enough in scale that you can put them together and they don't look too out of place with each other.

    • @CMZPICTURES
      @CMZPICTURES 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah most US model car manufactures (AMT, Johan etc) use(d) 1/25. Revell actually have a huge range of older subjects including custom and race cars etc in that scale. Monogram used 1/24 for some reason which made them an outlier. Just like with their other subjects the Monogram models are quite a bit nicer than the old Revell kits of the same age with generally low parts count, good fit and nice transparencies. So I guess nowadays Revell tool to 1/24 for international audiences or 1/25 for American. They still sell a different range of models in the US than Europe.

    • @MannsModelMoments
      @MannsModelMoments  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Do they sell a different range in the US though? Do you have any evidence for that? The company is owned by an investment group, so I really doubt that is the case these days

    • @arrrgee
      @arrrgee 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MannsModelMoments From my limited knowledge and research, Revell was originally a US based company which later merged with Monogram using the company name of Revell/Monogram and then there is the german Revell which I believe acted autonomously as a subsidiary of the US company.
      Revell/Monogram ceased to exist in 2018 following Hobbico going bankrupt.
      Revell Germany was bought out by Quantum Capital Partners (QCP) and they also purchased a lot of the old Revell/Monogram molds, trademakrs and assets to combine with Revell Germany. QCP have since set up a new Revell USA in 2018 which acts to import kits from Revell Germany to the US market.
      So they do sell the Revell kits in the US but not as a seperate range like they did prior to 2018.
      I believe this is why we get a lot of US car kits in the range these days, I imagine unlike aircraft and tanks which have universal appeal, car kits have a more local appeal in different countries.

    The logic is that the metric system adapts perfectly to 1/24 which explains the European cars at this scale from many plastic kit manufacturers.
    Conversely, imperial measurements go more with 1/25 which explains US cars at this scale.
    I got these explanations from a magazine specializing in mini cars, magazines that I bought in 1980 to 1999.

    David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA
    Thank you for this look ahead from Revell Germany (Revell AG? GmbH?). An immediate concern: I must ask kit makers and retailers in publicising their new kit releases that represent a real vehicle, rather than showing us digital photographs of the actual vehicle (in this case, a 1982 Volkswagen T3 Camper [7:50], a 1979 Chevrolet Z-28 Camaro [8:09], a 1970 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 [8:43], a Leopard II A7V), showing us high-resolution digital photographs of the completed model would facilitate our efforts in assembly, painting, etc.
    At 11:25, regarding Revell’s 1:48th-scale kit of the Chance Vought F4U-4 Corsair USN Carrier-Based Fighter, you note better kits from other manufacturers, including Tamiya. The Japanese company does make excellent 1:48th- and 1:32nd-scale kits of the early F4U series, though not (to my keen disappointment) of the F4U-4 late-war or the F4U-4B Korean War.
    However, Trumpeter manufactures a 1:32nd-scale F4U-4 kit, and Hobby Boss produces a 1:48th-scale kit of the fighter. From what I have read and heard, the former firm can make excellent-quality models, though their work over the years occasionally has proven uneven. I understand that Hobby Boss are a subsidiary of Trumpeter, and that they develop their molds from the designs the larger business developed (I may be in error as to the specific particulars of this arrangement). I cannot attest to the condition of design and manufacture of either of these kits, not having seen them. Still, I keenly hope that they are every bit as good as the best that the two are capable of offering us.
    I found a build review addressing this: “1/48 Hobby Boss F4U-4 Corsair (early version) Build” (Model Airplane Maker, no author credit, no publication date). The reviewer/builder asks “Do we finally have a Corsair -4 worth building?”
    He also reports, “Tamiya does not make a -4 but one can make a -4 out of a -1D Corsair with the help of a CMK conversion kit”, which is “what I did when I made my first -4 Corsair,” finding it “an unbelievable chore” . . . . “The resin shrunk and did not fit in key areas (flaps and cowl front!) and I had to buy Ultracast flaps in order to get any flap to fit. The end result was a solid ‘meh’ but I got my -4 into my collection”, showing digital photos immediately following.
    He summarises: “So do we have the definitive -4 Corsair in 1/48? Well, until Tamiya comes out with one, I think we do. There are well documented shortcomings with this kit (cowl shape, main gear door shape) but there are some excellent features as well. The plusses of this model are the cockpit, engine and the wing section. The minuses are the fit of the cockpit in the fuselage and the flaps/ailerons… but don’t worry, no one seems to get Corsair flaps installation. My issue with the kit is the asking price - at the time it was some 3x what I could get a Tamiya Corsair for.”
    One rather irregular issue that quite puzzles me of Revell’s 1:48th-scale Corsair kit: does the “Red Bulls” graphic refer to a squadron mascot or motif? I never have heard of this usage, so if it is true, I would like to learn more.
    Or is it some odd attempt at a contemporary product placement tie-in (we have here in the States a series of so-called “energy drinks” in various flavours under the brand label “Red Bull”); these have no affiliation with the Corsair, nor with anything even remotely similar, which makes inexplicable this application.

    Revell and Monogram usually issued kits in 1:24. AMT and MPC favoured 1:25. Odds are that Revell or Monogram 1:25 kits cane from AMT or MPC molds acquired by R or M in the colorations in the 80s and 90s. The new tool kits appear to put the American subject in 1:25 likely to compete with AMT/MPC now owned by Round 2 while the European subject is in Revell's usual 1:24 scale.

    Doesn't matter to me if a kit is 1:24 or 1:25. I only get upset if a model is released as 1:12 or 1:16, but not also in 1:24/1:25. I don't have shelf space for display of bigger kits.

      Yes, at least in so far as the small differences of scales is concerned, it was very unjustified.
      Then, just think how big a ship model would be if ALL kits were 1:24. That shows how absurd the scale discussion is.

    I wish some of the intricate models would make a return. They were the ones that had fully working parts, doors, suspension etc. that were skill level 10 based on today's skill levels. I have one of the original V8 kits that is missing parts with a few broken pieces that I wish I could get replacements for as well. I have one of the old Jupiter rockets with the tower, and boy do I miss those old instruction manuals that had detailed information on what you were working on, not the crappy photos and arrows of late. Reading the instructions was half the fun of assembly. What I would really like are the old metal kits, I forget the brand, but very few parts were plastic, everything was metal that had to be filed, fitted, and filled, and the end results would be a beautiful car like the Duesenburgs and Lincolns.

    It really just looks to be more of the same from Revell; lots of ancient re-boxings, a few new re-boxings, and a couple of genuinely new stuff...But it's going to hard to tell when looking at the boxes in store or online, and if you're new to the hobby and aren't familiar with ScaleMates, then it's going to be pot-luck with what you buy from Revell, and it could put you off the hobby for life!! 😂
    I do however, look forward to seeing the HMS Beagle (even though it's as old as me!!), as I do rather like the Revell old sailing ships - even of that vintage!! 😉 At least they provided all the blocks and tackle in their kits, unlike some other sailing ship kits from other manufacturers of the time.... and their rigging instructions are pretty comprehensive. 😃

    As some one who does ship models (1:300, 1:350, and 1:700), 1:1200 is a PERFECT size for something that sizes of a small shelf. I have 3 1:700 scale ships (Shokaku, Prinz Eugen, Ise(pre-retrofit)) and they're angled so that they can fit on my shelf which is maybe 6" deep, yet take up 2ft of space at said angle. 1:700 is economical, but like with trains, while 350 (relative O), & 700 (relative HO/00) are popular, some times you just want a smaller scale like 1:1200 (relative N scale) that is factually more detailed due to having to forgo small things like smaller AA gun positions). You only get "toy-like" when you over-think the model as a "prototype", and not as "your representation". Shoot my Prinz Eugen has her 1942 AA armament while still having the baltic camo ('cuz I like the Baltic livery though I will NEVER do it again aslong as there is no purchasable mask for each color), and my first proper ship model (Shokaku) only has one support on the bow, unlike real-life ('cuz dumb-dumb me was new to Tamyia instructions, which are still better than LEGO). Though I'll be getting that Bismarck.Wont be in Baltic Camo, but it's still Biscuit (I'mma leave that in there for those who DO know). Also, the pacific warriors set looks to have Benson class DD, and an Indianapolis class CL, most likely can be made into any of the Benson's (Laffey is the most legenary of the Benson's, and that one sank), while Portland...well we know (also fun fact, there is a Portland in IN, northeast of Indianapolis, though the ship in question is not named for the small town, but rather Portland Maine, or Portland, Oregon).
    Edit: corrected directions of Portland, IN, relative to Inidanapolis, IN, I live in NW Ohio (a small, insignificant, yet historically significant lil' town named Wapakoneta, OH, which is the childhood home of Neil Armstrong...yes the commander of Apollo 11), and I'm use to typing "Northwest" rather than "Northeast", which can also be tied to the fact that every town I lived in during my almost 1/4 century on Earth has been in the WEST side of the relative state.
    Edit 2: corrected "AA livery" to "AA armament"

    I believe that kit #14551 1957 Chevy BelAir Two Door Sedan is a "post" version (a sedan with a solid "B" pillar), not the hardtop version that came out originally in 1962, as the Revell 1957 Chevy Bel Air was never issued in a post sedan version until 2010, which was an updated variant of the Black Widow 210 NASCAR stock car kit version came out in the 1990s. Only the older Revell 1956 Chevy was issued in 1962 as a "post" version. The Bel Air kit mentioned in this catalogue is a re-issue of the newer renditioned kit that was first offered around 2010, which comes from a variant of the Black Widow. This newer modeled kit is a much better rendition of that particular car. The original Revell Tri-Five (1955/1956/1957) Chevrolets of the early 1960s all had opening doors, trunks/boots, hoods, but were defiantly not as accurate as the 1990s/2010 and later offerings of the mid-Fifties Chevys, all of which had closed doors and trunks/boots. The early 1960s kits were nice for that era but are not nearly as nicely done as the newer offerings as far as accuracy and details go. If you have any questions about early American car kit origins from the 1950s and forward, let me know, as I am an avid collector and aficionado of those auto kits.

    The Revell 1/1200 scale warships were all from the Esci "miniships" line. If Revell is faithful... the main decks were different for the KG V and Duke of York, removal of the aircraft catapult amidships additional AA guns. If you want to go overboard Tom's Model Works used to produce ships railings in 1/1200 scale. The "Pacific Pairing" set in 1/700 scale look to be a Fletcher Class Destroyer and the Heavy Cruiser USS Indianapolis the Indianapolis was a matchbox kit I'm not sure about the Fletcher.
    I build the 1/1200 scale ships and like them. I do prefer the Airfix 1/1200 scale Bismark's hull form the Esci/Revell one seems to be exaggerated around the Armor belt. I do wish they would bring out IJN Shinano again. That like also includes the Italian Batgleships like Roma. The 1/1200 scale Revell ships that they developed are full hull models and mostly civilian liners/cruise ships/ferries. The ones of Esci origin are all waterline models.

    I don't mind buying old models as old models. But when they put an old model in a new art box and make no mention of its age, that burns me up. Airfix did this to me with a B24 once. I read them the riot act and at least they gave me a new tooling kit as an apology. I like the Revell 1200 ships, but in truth, at that scale the difference between a Bismarck and a Tirpitz is very little. Yamato or Musashi, Missouri or Iowa, King George these are all classes of ship. Buy 3 kits, paint them differently. But I have a great collection of unique ships in the scale.

    I just rewatched this video, hoping to have missed a reissue or new issue 1:72 M48 tank the first time. :-)
    At the same time I am listening to the humming of my adult son's new Prusa Mini+ 3D-printer. And I must say that the model companies really, really should wake up and smell the future. Even with a filament printer like this and PLA, I get prints that are certainly competitive with factory injection moulded plastic kits. (Figures in 1:72 scale seems to be a limit for this printer still, but resin printers with much higher resolution are also getting cheaper.) Sure, the printing takes time, material, and energy. However, I am finding that I can find so many objects of various kinds that interest me as a modeller (almost exclusively to 1:72 scale), for _free_ , that I won't run out of things I'd want to build, ever. And that just looking at the _free_ models for printing myself. If I want, I can buy a highly detailed 3D printed M38A2 by Germania Figuren for €12, and probably find a just as highly detailed STL file for it for just a little more. And as time passes, the probability that someone makes a new 3D model and publishes the STIL file for it for free just increases.
    RIGHT NOW, the model manufacturers have an advantage - they have models and injection moulding forms that have lasted them for decades, and have paid back their cost. They also get the advantages of 3D modelling for their new issues. But _soon_ nobody will want to buy a plastic kit that was injection moulded in a form from half a century ago, because they can get the exact version of anything they like, and print it out to a much higher standard - with or without some assembly required, depending on preference. If you have old moulds, now is the time to get them all going, and start selling kits at prices that can compete with 3D-printing - while prices still _can_ compete with 3D-printing. Because soon, they will not be competitive anymore.
    Some manufacturers seem to be more aware than others. Revell sure does not seem to have any strategy. I guess my strategy if I were an old model company like Revell, would be to have a multi-tiered catalog: everything ever done should be available for order, focus should be on making new subjects and variants, and then selling on-demand 3D-printed items until the popularity of a subject warrants injection moulding production. And just as with photoetch, 3D-printed components could be used for variants, with the base components of a kit being injection moulded. My most wanted item (I would like 25 total) currently is the M48A1 version of the M48 tank. Here, the hull bottom, wheels and tracks, and the basic turret, could be base components, some even cross-usable with other tanks and vehicles not from the M48-family as such. For me to build one, I need: ESCI/Italeri/Revell (original ESCI) M48 tank kit (OOP), improved wheels and tracks by OKB Grigorov in Bulgaria, A1 engine deck (replacing entire deck part of the ESCI kit) by Modell-Trans in Germany, and also an entire Revell M60 w/dozer kit if I want the M48 to have a dozer blade. That is one mightly expensive and complicated M48A1, just in the provisioning (with several rare or OOP elements), and still it requires some scratchbuilding. I can wait though, and while I will probably build what I already have of M48 in my stash, I will do the rest as 3D-print in the future.
    Kids probably like model figures and vehicles etc just as much today as they always have, but if Revell et al want to encourage new young modelers with access to 3D-tech, they need to take the tech into account. A few weeks ago, I saw that ordinary stores are beginning to sell 3D-printers - I bought my first one fire years ago, it wasn't very good and I rarely used it, but today the quality standard is _high_ and it is only growing, while the price is going down and printing is just becoming easier. Now is a great time to be a modeler, especially ones who are ready to learn 3D-design and add that to their modelling skills; but it'll soon be a tough time for the old manufacturers.
