  • This film was made by the grandson of a 181 squadron pilot around the 60th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. Thanks for watching and taking time to learn about the Typhoon Pilots role in the second world war.
We'd like to thank everyone who has watched the 1st half of this film. Many of the comments are duly noted regarding music and sound levels. Please bare in mind the film was made on a laptop and the sound mixing was always a stumbling block due to inexperience. The project was originally part of a proposal to produce a more professional film for TV, but interest from broadcasters for developing the story into a programme was not forthcoming. Thanks again to all of you who bought copies and waited patiently for them to arrive, we sent them all over the world and this meant a lot as the project was entirely self-funded.
We're hoping to find the time to restore the original edit but collating all the material to do this is time consuming and challenging and costly.
We hope to offer the whole film with improved graphics, sound and a new score in the near future, on Vimeo's Pay Per View platform. We'd appreciatte it if you enjoyed this 30 minute excerpt if you could register your interest and what you think is a reasonable price for a PPV documentary such as this and all (sensible) views will be taken into consideration.
Thanks for watching - we hope to update with progress here as soon as we can.
The Hawker Typhoon was a British single-seat fighter-bomber, produced by Hawker Aircraft. While the Typhoon was designed to be a medium-high altitude interceptor, and a direct replacement for the Hawker Hurricane, several design problems were encountered, and the Typhoon never completely satisfied this requirement. Other external events in 1940 prolonged the gestation of the Typhoon.
Nicknamed the Tiffy in RAF slang, the Typhoon's service introduction in mid-1941 was also plagued with problems, and for several months the aircraft faced a doubtful future. However, in 1941 the Luftwaffe brought the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190 into service: the Typhoon was the only fighter in the RAF inventory capable of catching the Fw 190 at low altitudes and, as a result, secured a new role as a low-altitude interceptor.Through the support of pilots such as Roland Beamont the Typhoon also established itself in roles such as night-time intruder and a long-range fighter. From late 1942 the Typhoon was equipped with bombs; from late 1943 ground attack rockets were added to the Typhoon's armoury. Using these two weapons, the Typhoon became one of the Second World War's most successful ground-attack aircraft.

When I was an undergraduate engineer at Westland I worked for awhile under the supervision of a lead stress engineer on helicopter gear design. He was a Typhoon pilot during WW2, but was reluctant to talk in much detail, it was an uncomfortable subject for him and he would gloss over & extricate himself fairly quickly. He was such a good helpful fellow. I was greatly honoured to have known him. He was very tall, his name was Bill Wilson.

    I spoke too soon.
Now having watched the whole video, I am stunned and tears are rolling down my cheeks.
The image of those pilots and their quiet calm almost jovial attitudes is one of unbelievable courage.
No histrionics, no beating of the chest, no screaming or shouting, just good men recounting the horrors that they endured every day.
    Bless them all.

I thought all youngsters were largely ignorant of the Second World War. So I'm impressed that a 17 year old could have made this. It's very moving and the music is well chosen and the editing is excellent.

In the mid-fifties I was in the RAF and one of the officers under whom I served had flown the Typhoon after other fighters. He said very little about what he had done but he lauded the plane as being on a par with the Mosquito in many ways - particularly in its role as the Tank buster etc. It deserves a much higher profile that it has enjoyed. So glad to have found this video (by accident). Well done.

I will be updating this page at the end of the year to let people know what the intention is with such a project. At the moment work and life is keeping me/us busy but the Typhoon story is worth revisiting. Please keep spreading the good word about the film and thank-you!

Would love to learn more about this amazing engine. Basically the airplane was built for the engine so might as well talk about the engine a wee bit more. Amazing to hear about this bizarre engine from the 40's! I can't imagine flying a plane with 250HP, let alone 2500!

My father (deceased) was a member of the RAAF seconded to the RAF and flew Hurricanes and later Typhoons (after a stint at Boscom Downes (not sure of the spelling) and was shot down in '44 and a POW .
Dad rarely spoke of his war service - few vets I know do .... so to get those fellows to appear is a big deal. I am not sure that many of the pilots would still be alive ..... given WW2 finished in 1945 and it is now 2017 ... any that are still alive would be in their late 80's or well into their 90's.
More power to you for this production - as good as most commercial documentaries.

After retiring from the USMC after 23 years as an F4 Phantom II pilot, for some silly reason, I became interested in building and flying remotely controlled airplanes. I went through the "trainers" that were in kit form and became quite proficient at flying the things. I had always wanted to build an airplane from plans and bare sticks, so I set about to identify the airplane that I wanted to build and fly. I settled on the Typhoon. I never regretted it. While there is no tangible comparison between flying the RC planes and the real thing, I began to study the history behind the Typhoon and that is where I became enamored with it. This 30 minute segment has whetted my appetite for learning yet more about an amazing aircraft that made mincemeat of Nazi German troops on the coasts of France and Belgium and all the way into Germany proper. It was incredible work under impossible conditions.
My hat is off to the gentlemen who flew these airplanes. Everything I have read tells me that it was not an easy task and was downright dangerous at times WITHOUT considering enemy fire !!! To you chaps in the RAF who flew this beast, I say "Semper Fidelis". You have my eternal admiration.
I see that the last comments were posted about one year ago so I don't know how often this comment section is checked, but when it is, I would like to hear from someone about the final 30 minutes of the story. When you comment, please post an address to write to or an e-mail address that I can go to. I will also need to know how many American dollars that I need to send for the entire disc.
Thank you for taking the time to put this together. There is nothing better than getting first-hand interviews with the real live experience behind the stick.

Only just found this film. Typhoons have a special fondness for me as prior to his death my Uncle was working on restoring a Hawker Typhoon. He had amassed a most of the instruments, blueprints for the airframemetc. but was having difficulty obtaining a Napier Sabre engine. He had acquired one, dug out of Hackney Marshes, after a week of solid research (that I ducked school for) at the IWM to find one that had crashed after the pilot bailed out and had not yet been salvaged. Eventually we found one; lost control having shot down a V1. Until the day of his death he maintained that the Typhoon was the best plane of it's time at what it did. Even the later American Skyraiders couldn't compare. For me personally; it was the Mosquito.

A great presentation about unbelievably courageous men in a fabulous but slightly flawed aircraft. I met an elderly chap about thirty years ago (seemed old as I was in my twenties) he was the bar manager in a local hotel and I was told that he had been a Typhoon pilot during the war.
He had one over the eight on a night off and, with friends, I had a very interesting and sometimes hilariously funny account of a little bit of his three years in what he described as his "terrifically terrifying Tiffy".
He is dead now, as are so many of his colleagues, so sadly there are no more nights of glorious reminiscences about crash landings in french fields with bits of tree sticking on the rocket racks. So I think it is wonderful that someone should take the time and make the effort to remind us of these saviours of democracy. Well done you 17 year old with your laptop and thank you very much.

To the young man who put this together, i tip my hat to you sir. Well done. My hope is that the production values get sorted, as i'm sure the rest of this documentary is just
as riviting. At 3:33 i paused the clip,as i recognized this Typhoon from the No.440 Sqdn
history book. The three gentlemen are P/O "Dick" Watson the g/c are Ivan Black and 'Del'
Christopherson. This was taken at Eindhoven,30/Nov/1944. While this documentary
focuses on the RAF, Canada sent three F/B "Tiffie" Sqdns into the fray. 438,439 440sqdn.
Each performed gloriously and at a very high cost. RCAF "Tiffies" wore black spinners
and were dive bombers. The RAF wore white spinners and used rockets. A tour on "Tiffies" was 100 sorties. Flying Typhoons was a very perilous duty. 450 Typhoons were
used on D-day. By mid August when the beach head was secured 151 pilots were lost.
41 of these brave lads were Canadian. all found, 633 " Tiffie" pilots were lost by wars end.159 of these brave souls were Canadian. To all of these great guys, thank you.

There are two connections to this airplane in my family: My great uncle Melsom Gee flew them out of England in 43-44, and in fact died in one over France on D-Day. My dad later worked for Napier, and his focus were the Deltic engines that were used in Torpedo boats and eventually the Royal Scot locomotives. He was an engineer, and his apprenticeship was with some of the engineers who had built and refined the Sabre. Napier had a flair for highly innovative design ideas, but often ones that were dependent on everything being exactly right to deliver on their promise.
Always thought these machines were very striking in their brutal, powerful appearance and the way they represented quite literally the maximum extension of the propellor-driven single seat combat aircraft. It's a very good film, and I'd love to see it in its full form. Have you got any kind of crowd-funding organized for its completion?

She worked 15 hour days and despised every second. She was also blitzed. The story of the Typhoon does not begin and end with the pilots, and all who lived through the war were hero's. I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this film, or part of a film. The Hawker Typhoon is an outstanding aircraft at a time when the sky's over the European theatre were abuzz with outstanding aircraft of war. The apeal, it seems to me, is as the buccaneer of the sky. Its close encounters with enemy assets, to use the current venacular, the means to allow its pilot to smash and destroy with a dreadful resolve and an immediate gratification a young man can feel after unleashing such power to destroy. The Typhoon looked like a killer from the skies and it was. It was a powerful aircraft, and a puposfull beast of destruction bringing pin point death to its targets. A wondeful machine of war and a strangely handsome one.

For anyone who hasn't read it I recommend 'The Big Show' by Pierre Closterman

I'm so impressed with the quality and presentation of this documentary. I always wanted to know more about this aircraft after seeing a destroyed Napier engine in a museum in Normandy. Even though it was so badly damaged as it had flown straight into the ground, I struggled to work out how many engines it was made from as it had a mass of gears connecting it all around the final (prop) drive. That was over twenty years ago and this film is an educational experience - thank you!

Just to re-iterrate my/our thanks for your continued support - keep watching and sharing the video and if you have something nice or supportive to say then please comment! The Typhoon was flown by a multi-national group of pilots and it's just one aspect of the story that connects so many different regions with the same bit of history. Sorry if we don't reply as quickly as other TH-camrs - work and life commitments take up a lot of time! Thanks for your support and we'll do our best to bring you some exciting news on the Typhoon film later this year.

Yes, an excellent 'plane despite early teething problems, it still came into its own and cemented a brilliant reputation as a superlative ground attack fighter.

Its a fabulous documentary, I've just watched it for the first time.
I learned about this aircraft after reading Commando war stories as a child in the 70's and 80's. But after a work colleague lent me 'The Big Show' by Pierre Closterman my fascination grew. A powerful but fickle aircraft(a lot of them were) which was pivitol in the ground attack role.
Thanks for your efforts. I'd love to see the second half.

One had to feel more in control flying this 24 cylinder monster. However, people were swept up into the war and turned into brave pilots. Great music score including Ridey Scott's Alien showing the german 88 MM guns. Very chilling! Again, Great job!

Brilliant work! Waaaay better than all the TV history documentaries! It seems no matter what subject of aerial warfare they choose they cannot help but give a full chronology of the Battle of Britain and the lead up to WW2, assuming total ignorance of the viewer. Yours on the other hand does exactly what it should do and informs the viewer on the chosen topic. Documentary makers take note!

What a fantastic documentary, absolutely first class. What can I say that hasn't been said, except I've had the privilege of working for over 20 years on the latest generation of Typhoons. A worthy name and perhaps a memorial to those who gave everything. This film along with many others, should be part of the school curriculum.

This piece brought tears to my eyes, it is very informative, I have loved the Tiffie and Tempest and Sea Fury since I was a child, I have never seen film footage well good film footage of my babies, just photographs, I for one love the presentation, the idea that it is here for me watch and re-watch is good enough for me, because of my love for planes there are many great planes that there is no information on them so thank you for this piece!

I'm really glad this film got made - we could have had nothing...
There are several Mustangs, Spitfires, F8's, F6's, P47's etc, even a few Bf109's and FW190's. But if I were to have a WW2 bird, it would be a Tempest or a Typhoon, with the Napier Sabre II engine.

I rememder....and was in awe of the Typhoon armed with rockets. A more handsome plane I may have ever seen. I purchased the first model kit I found and painted it on D Day color scheme. I think some of the bravest men ever flew her. I was aware any German tank spotted was in great danger.

A brilliant piece of documentary. A credit to the young fellows who made it and to the crews in the air and on the ground who lived it. I have seen many docos that were not to this standard from tv who had much more $$ and technology at their disposal. Again well done.
I have just finished yesterday (23-3-2015).reading Clostermans.."The Big Show" that gave me nightmares but such is the price humanity pays for peace.
I recall making my air fix models inc the typhoon and thinking what a pugnacious thing it was.
I have had the privilege to be treated as a patient by a doctor who I believe lives in Tasmania now who flew the Typhoon, ie hat is after his military service he trained to be a doctor. In an interview with the ABC he related that he was flying a Typhoon carrying the surrender documents forward for the Germans to sign and crash landed! he somehow got the documents to their destination.

I enjoyed watching this tribute to the UK version of our P47 Jug. I think I will take the Jug, as it had a lot of parts protecting the operator, namely a big R2800 double wasp, but I imagine the sound from two flat twelves Siamesed together could only be truly appreciated live and in person. My Dad spent some time at Hawker Sidley in the mid 60’s. It was across the river, east of all the trendy spots back then. Only 20 years after VE. Still fresh in the minds of the men who were in the fight I reckon. Nice job on this film.

Really great documentary on the Tiffy. I am an aged pilot - can't fly on pain pills! - and truly enjoyed the film. While living in England in the early '50's, I was able to meet with several RAF Tiffy pilots, and enjoyed their tales told to a young lad such as I was. I vividly recall the late summer evenings, when the sky was filled with the contrails of fighters exercising their skills - a beautiful sight!
