"We shoot them down by training to shoot them down."
... fascinating. So enlightening.
See those missiles on the wing tips. That's how.
Now you know.
Maybe give him a little break. He's flying an attack helicopter while being interviewed. There is a LOT going on that isn't apparent. And, yes, I have flown Cobras (AH-1W) and know what I am talking about.
@@CohenRautenkranz Not taking away from what he's doing, more questioning why this needs it's own video and why the title is clickbait BS.
@@CohenRautenkranz the sound insulation is really THAT good?
@@danielch6662 Nope. They're actually very loud machines & insulation=weight. That is one reason the voices are so tinny sounding in most of the footage you see. There is a pretty narrow range of frequencies that the intercommunication system is designed to isolate. The first few times flying in a military helo can be quite a challenge until you get your helmet dialed in and get used to the lack of vocal depth.
I recall the first time I flew in a Sikorsky S-76 executive model and the difference in noise is enormous.
For those of you looking for an actual answer: the AH-1Z is the only US helicopter capable of carrying the AIM-9X Sidewinder (short-range) air-to-air missile. The Marines are also working on implementing the AMRAAM (long-range) air-to-air missile. The Viper interfaces with the F-35 through datalink. Through datalink, the F-35 can provide targeting and guidance for the missiles. Pretty cool stuff! In air combat, the Viper is basically a glorified F-35 sidekick/missile hauler
I have an heavy armed SU-30 in my backyard
AMRAAM is a medium range missile (it’s in the name)
I think the army put sidewinders and stingers on apaches once and they worked
The Apache is also capable of carrying air to air missiles, Israel and Koreas Apaches do it.
Here's the thing: missile effectiveness is directly linked to energy at launch: how fast you are and how high you are relative to the target.
As y'all might imagine, a helicopter has neither, so best case scenario the range of their missiles is half the expected range.
In any situation where there's fixed wing on the hunt for helicopters, the helicopter is either dead or running into hiding. You're not going to pick a fight. As operations in Ukraine showed, even though there the air warfare landscape is very different, but the threat density is too much for attack helicopters to operate without immense attrition so shooting down fixed wing is really only in the books as a desperate measure.
These pilots give those most non answer doublespeak platitudes I've ever heard.
Proceeds to not explain any of the ways a helicopter can shoot down an airplane 😂
I would imagine that's because they want to keep that information as private as they can.
@@rossgudwer3538 then don’t make videos about it 🤦🏻♂️
@@MatthewBKR I'll make sure to pass that information along to the right people 😂
That’s not how it can shoot down an airplane. It’s just explaining that it can and they train for it.
Well most people already know how it can, the same way any aircraft shoots down another one. The difference is most helicopters don’t have the technology capable of adopting air to air missiles, pretty sure those are AIM-9s on his wing tips.
@@Austin-cx2xesemi-active or active radar missiles on a viper or apache would be damn scary though
"Can" is a strong word here. I'm not sure there's EVER been a recorded ATA against a fixed wing aircraft for any attack helicopter.
Against other helicopters? Absolutely.
The "how to defend ourselves from that" is to call your buddy in the F35.
@@Austin-cx2xe the apatche can carry stingers or mistrals
@@JonTietz j catch read the Wikipedia
J-CATCH, short for Joint Countering Attack Helicopter, was a joint US Army-US Air Force experiment in dissimilar air combat between jet fighters and attack helicopters, conducted in 1978/79. To the surprise of many involved in the program, the helicopters proved extremely dangerous to the fighters when they were properly employed, racking up a 5-to-1 kill ratio over the fighters when fighting at close ranges with guns.
i am mentally stable, hey look a civilian airline
Funny to think that this pilot fears a flock of birds more than a flight of fighter jets 😂
Helicopters can shoot down fighters. Red Flag has shown that already
I COULD happen but chances are the helecopter is dead before he can even see the plane
@@thrash208 only the most modern fighters can do so.
@@pigmoonk2545not really. You've got troops on the ground telling you where the helicopter is, you can get a shot off before the helicopter is even remotely in range.
@@Galf506 That is so theoretical. The fighter cant even find the helicopter on radar. They have to visually identify. Good luck when you are flying even at 5000ft. Gosh you are noob
@@pigmoonk2545why would the plane be unable to detect and track a helo? A helicopter is easier to detect than a ground vehicle because it still has to hover away from rhe ground. You have radars that can pick and track SUV sized signals on planes with ground attack packages
“If the wings are moving faster than the plane it’s a helicopter.”
Now I’m curious to see AH-64 Apache vs SU-57 Felon in real life rather than just the dcs one
A experimental jet vs a attack helicopter yeah sure
Why not a mi-28 instead don’t be weird
@@shikinami0297 for context to what I said some guy asked Growling Sidewinder (quite the popular DCS youtuber) for a while to do su-57 vs ah-64 and after hundreds of days asking the youtuber finally did it and it was as you might expect but fun to watch. In conclusion its fun to think and though unlikely anything is possible but for the most part just fun to think about.
Apache doesnt carry aim9s
@@marktimmer2212 AIM-92 Stinger
@@Of_Your_Volition Yes and the aim-9 , spoke before my turn.
That pilot is a badass glad he’s on our side
AH-1Z Viper reigns king
“Here’s how…”
I’m still waiting for the HOW.
If you look at the winglets you can see sidewinders
“Here’s how helicopters shoot down jets:”
Video: says absolutely nothing about how they actually shoot them down
F22 vs apache would last however long it takes the missile to reach it 🤣
How did Hasard, being an Air Force F-16 pilot, get to fly the USMC AH-1Z Viper?
I believe he was just riding along, not sure though
A Viper pilot in a Viper. Who'd have thunk it?
@@Jfhstin I believe just to ride on the front seat of a 2 seater attack helicopter for someone not trained in it is not allowed by the military. I recall watching a program on History Channel where the late Gunny Erny E. Lee was showcasing the Army Apache AH-64D. He said he could only watch on the ground because he was not clear to fly in it.
Because he's not flying it? Lmao. Jesus.
@user-pj3ch8ou2h I flew front seat in an AH-1W about 20 years ago. I actually had a little bit of stick time too.
There was an article a few years back of how US Army helicopters gave the USAF a headache in an exercise in the early 80s after the Army made them realize how extremely vulnerable their planes were to Heli-launched sidewinders.
Says this is how helicopters shoot down airplane; doesn't show how helicopters shoot down Anything
Theirs a reason the AH-1Z Viper has AIM 9X Sidewinders on it.
It’s pretty much the same as how planes down other planes, missiles that lock on to their target, if that’s sidewinders or it’s Aim-7 sparrows, they are made to 🔐 n and disable enemy aircraft, shift from a helicopter or a jet, pretty much no different other than starting altitude and flying speeds
Do you not see the aim9-m on the left and right pylon?
these videos are giving me so much info. recently been thinking of joining the airforce and as much as I'm passionate about aviation the danger is great so thank you for ur service
I read your book and loved it which lead me to this channel, I have loved Thai content just as much. Keep up the great work!
How do you fight a plane like a su-27
Got the most respect for helicopter pilots like this. The combat footage from these units is fucking insane.
this is some crazy dcs gameplay
Welll.... we're waiting ....
That really explains a lot…
So in the Apache if a missile hits you can you get out before the helicopter crashes?
The problem is that you don't even see aircraft thats firing at you. The missile is being fired from 200-300km away.
No it isn't, at those ranges the FCR would be behind the curvature
Was waiting for how, then the clip ended
Can you make a video about your time at the Air Force academy and all the steps you took to being accepted please.
Shooting down a fighter with a gunship is easy: you just need to be born with Big Boss' genes and get trained by the SAS.
Literally my dream helicopter to fly
The Cobra/AH-1Z Viper is an awesome helicopter. I had the privilege to build parts for it for almost 30 years.
@@Shawn-wd4qd that’s awesome. I heard that the Ah-1z shares many parts with the Uh-1 variants, another reason why it’s so reliable
@@stealthstargamer Yeah, the biggest variant is that the rotor blades can fit on both the Huey & Viper.
@@Shawn-wd4qd there is no reason to hate this helicopter ❤️
@@stealthstargamer i love it
Tengo entendido que los pilotos están sentados atrás mi pregunta es que tan difícil es volar un helicóptero si la visibilidad es limitada según veo en el vídeo?
This is off-topic but I wanted to say, Congratulations on your book!
“Here’s how I waste your time” there fixed it for you
What protection does the rear rotor have ??
Hey Bill, pls do a movie with Louie
I got your book, it’s a good book. Great job
Wow nice insight…
For those of you looking for an actual answer: Helicopters like this will be easily detected by Dopler-radar and shotdowned
Apaches have been able to use Stinger missiles for about 30 years.
What if you're dealing with an MRF and youre on the sea?
"Wait, why is there a plane on your tally?" - Well, an SU-35 came a little too close and we shoot him down (casually walks away lighting a cigar).
So what he meant to say was they use missiles, missiles shoot down a plane
Not always, gunfights do happen, although rare.
I was the first to comment!!!! Love your videos
Wow lol. Congrats. Phone your family and tell them what you’ve accomplished.
There has never been a single documented helicopter on helicopter dog fight ever recorded
In the spirt of “Training” was the explanation that I heard from a few Cobra Pilots when the “tactical maneuver” exercise was over.., this was indeed helo vs. helo dogfighting & fairly common as long as you’re out there burning fuel you need to maximize the training syllabus to increase pilot efficiency and warrior mentality. These were the ‘80’s & Blue Thunder movie was fresh out of Hollywood. A “real” dogfight with live weapons.., NO.., but a simple series of simulated aerial combat “ambushes”& “escapes”occasionally.
My man is taking a video in a AH-1Z💀
Pipedream.
If 22 or F 35, you never see it coming
Sidewinders are dangerous.
Never ever underestimate what a Marine can do with his weapon! You WIIL lose!
Didn't know Ben Affleck was a helicopter pilot in real life 👀
with missile of course
this don't answer shit but that's just the regular youtube experience.
How do you get out of that helicopter aircraft if you get shot down?
You literally told us nothing about how a helicopter can shoot down an airplane😂😂😂
Salute ❤
How?
I'm just really curious how quickly you can change the velocity of that big blade up top. I just imagine a helicopter in general has a significantly slower response rate than a fighter jet
Has nothing to do with it. It's the pitch or the blades, not the rotation speed.
And as far as speed goes, it's as fast as you can move your arms.
MANPAD food.
That’s cool thank you
Can you say helicopter supposed to be classified
Is it hella cramped in that cockpit?
Interesting
Still waiting for the how....
Yes, but can it shoot down HIMARS?
I like the part where it was explained
Wheres the how?
OK. How?
Well for some of you who didn’t notice that on the tip of the wings are placed 1 aim-9 air to air missile on each wing🗿
so they can't fight the Tomcat?
This video taught more about clickbait then about helicopters.
Is it missiles
It’s called missiles, that’s how. Next dumb question
Warthunder already taught us this tho.
**Laughs in F-35**
Sorry but that’s a pretty dumb question? Armed Forces Helicopters been armed from the 1st pilot set in 1 with a pistol of course they are.
I could’ve given that answer
Turn those assets into liabilities
Fixed wing air craft isn't that WW2 prop air plane. What about Korean War jet airplane?
Missiles don’t discriminate. Obvious is obvious.
Just ask Nick Cage
Can you shoot down any incoming air threats??
If you have the proper defensive tools, then yes.
Doesn't say anything about how. Just some guy talking about training it
This did not, AT ALL, explain how a helicopter shoots down an airplane
It doesn't really. Their range is just too short. They'd have a chance against older airframes and MAYBE can use F35 targeting support to defend themselves.
Other than that they need a big brother in the sky.
It's the same problem enemy fighters face against F35 and F22. How do you engage an enemy you don't know is there?
deadliest....so I guess the V 280 Valor no good or the RAH 66 Comanche (use to be)AH- 64E longbow not mean enough? or AC 130 gunship "the angel of death" 🤔
Why you have a Close caption if you have the WORD subscribe ON IT??
That diddnt answer a damn thing
i bet these guys are concerned about K-52
Great view in the Zulu.
Glade to be in America
Ah-1Z viper is the helicopter
That didnt tell us anything....
Being a war thunder player for many years and an actual military and history buff I can safely say especially from the war in Ukraine how quick shit gets shot down so fast. One can think the most high powered and dangerous pieces of equipment can’t be disposed of easily is crazy. I have never seen more KA-50s been shot by man pads down in Ukraine than any other video game before 😂
It’s crazy how inaccurate Hollywood portrays the durability of tanks, helicopters and fighter jets. Yes they weapons of mass destruction but they can also get fucked up very quickly.
Did i miss it?
Remember, planes can lob goddamn bombs through helicopters. Fixed wing for the win.
Cobras have multiple MiG kills.
@@tl5606 they do not, but it would be cool! Find one for us :)
@@JonTietz according to multiple sources, including US government sources. Iranian Cobras have 5 A2A kills on Iraqi aircraft. 1 MiG-23, 3 MiG-21s, 1 Su-20.
@@JonTietzyou're just dumb
😋 Yeah but helicopters are sexier.
😎 Well, except for the A-10 - it’s simply badass.
🫡 Oh, then there’s the most beautiful flying wonder ever: the SR-71.
🥲 Words fail.
They shoot them down with a tow missle trick shot
These helmets are getting ridiculous. Does nobody at Darpa or the like realize that it's possible to put almost everything elsewhere and just link up to the helmet? You can remove more than half of the stuff from the helmet and just connect a friggin cord to it and save the pilots necks from so much unnecessary damage. Then again, engineers aren't known for practical usage as they sit at home or in an office and typically have ZERO real world experience. It's not like we haven't been connecting larger devices to smaller ones for decades
What's that? You may need to defend yourself and your aircraft where?
I assume if your helicopter is shot down there is no second chance at life with an ejection seat like in a jet? You’re just screwed?
Clickbait about how heli shoots planes but al u see is a marshmellow talk mid flight cookie and coffee hr😂
