      Mistake #1 i can agree on. Will try to get a 65" if i can get the X90 on the next sale.
      Mistake #2 i can see as well. 8k is just not there yet.
      Mistake #3 i have to disagree somewhat. You may not need it for much, but it's still better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
      Mistake #4 Yeah the thing with TVs with thousands of Hz refresh rate sounds very fishy indeed.
      Mistake #5 I did this unfortunately. The TV i have now is the Samsung 58MU6199 and when i bought it i asked specifically for HDR10 support which this model doesn't have.
      Mistake #6 I learnd to love OLED with my PSVita, so i know how beautiful the screen is. Also never had issues with burn-in with it. The only reason i hesitate to buy one is the price.

      I've had an image at least that big for over 10 years with a Panasonic projector (#PTAX200) - it could go wider but my bedroom is too small. It's only 720p but still gave a great image, but it's old now, so it's not worth buying a new £200 lamp. Once you go big you can never go back. I'm unsure if projectors are still the best way to go for a big image on a budget - probably if you want to go even bigger, but a 4k resolution projector would be over £1k.

    I'm less than a week with this wonderful channel, but using it I already managed to choose a 4k TV for my mom some days ago and went with 1-5 points mentioned: she wanted Samsung QE43Q60T, and at first I managed to convince her on larger size (since she has to watch SD broadcast, perceived upscaling must bew good) and then to spend more on 120Hz (since she is sensitive to motion). 8k and hdmi 2.1 are not for her anyway. HDR point required watching lots of your vids, and OLED was a no go since she watches TV in a bright room. I ended up choosing Sony KD-49XH9505 and am yet to regret anything.

      I watched it and I would take any 8k over 4k anytime anywhere. He didn't change my perception but maybe it's just me. His reasons are baseless.
      There are million of phones now that record 8k like S20 and 2 years from now every new phone will be shooting 8k. There are also many other cameras that shoot 8k like Canon R5 and there is even a video card for gamers that can play 8k on some level. This is where the money in the technology is. If he talks movies and tv then he should know that those are losing money and they are still stuck at 2k and maybe stuck there forever . Also the premium of 8k is negligable but the difference in pixels over 4k is enormous (25 megapixels)

      Playing Minecraft in 8K is a bucket list goal for me.
      Totally agree that 8K needs OLED though. Hearing that Samsung isn't going to adopt QD-OLED was a huge disappointment for me, I tend to prefer Samsung image processing (Game Motion Plus does a fantastic job interpolating 60hz content with low latency, since 8K is limited to 60hz right now Samsung is basically my only choice, though I might take LG because of their G-Sync support, except there's basically no way LG is going to buy QD-OLED from Samsung (Aaargh!))

      Same with games. Bigger fps feels better than going from 4k to 8k. Noone will play games in 8k for the next 3-5 years.

    I’ve had a LG B6 for about 3 years now. I vary my content so wasn’t worried about burn-in. My mistake was turning on high contrast (yellow with no background) captions. Even though they moved they ended up burning in pretty much the entire area that they occupied. I noticed it about 6 months ago and turned them off and the shadow is still there. It’s not terrible and I’ll definitely buy another OLED but just wanted to share for anyone that likes their bright captions!

    • @blindoptimist3351
      @blindoptimist3351 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No I think hdr is just fine because it moves around, I’ve never had trouble with it. The captions did it because they were always in the same area. I play FPS games in hdr and have never had burn-in with static images like mini-map, compass, etc.

    • @SAIIIURAI
      @SAIIIURAI 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimchain7200 Hdr has nothing to do with overall picture brightness! It's just the range between dark areas and the bright ones like specular highlights who usually don't stay that long in frame, are mostly small and usually move too if it's not something static!
      Its also has a wider colour space if remember correctly but iam not 100% sure on that right now...
      That's why the tv turns on full power when it detects a hdr picture to let the bright highlights really pop and the user should not lower any settings which would just reduce the hdr effect!

    I recently decided to get a X Box Series X console and shortly after, I also decided to upgrade to a 4k tv. I quickly realized that technology had changed a lot in the last 10 years (I got my current tv in 2010), so I needed to get informed in order to make a good choice given my budget and wants. I surfed the internet and watched a number of TH-cam videos to learn as much as I could. I started my information gathering in early November 2020 and found that I was watching your channel more than others. The last video I watched is this one ( the mistakes to avoid). I truly like both your professionalism and your common sense approach in reviewing equipment as well as in providing advice to consumers. I finally ordered the Sony XBR A9G, which will be delivered in the first few days of December. I got it at Best Buy and got the extended service plan that does indeed cover « burn-in » should it occur. I will also get the tv calibrated by a Best Buy Geeksquad professional calibrator in January. I still have not got the X Box Series X but I hope that I can get one within a month or two. I wish to thank you for the content that you are putting on TH-cam, which was extremely helpful in making my purchase decision and in understanding what I can expect from the console and the display.

    My budget allows an 86 inch TV which takes about 8 months to purchase completely. The TV shows the college student all the details required to view any information coming from tutors which would otherwise have been missed using a smaller TV. Too small TVs can be harmful to the eyes. The best experience with monitors and TVs has been in the 32 to 43, and 49 to 86 inches range for many happy customers in Iceland. but the lack of channel apps has removed this as an option for me. I think I'll wait to see what the CXI (C11) has and if it improves on the negative feedback they've got from the CX based on it's firmware and missing apps. At this rate I'll be waiting so long that micro LED's will replace OLED as the new gold standard.

    I agree with Vincent because even for console gamers I don’t think you really need hdmi 2.1 unless playing competitive games that actually reach further than 60 FPS. Unless you have a 3080 or 3090 graphics card. Allm is pointless really because it just saves you a few clicks. Earc is actually useful because it eliminates the lag between tv sound and sound bar so you can use both at the same time. 4k 120 and vrr for those competitive games. So it’s only for a small percent of people that really need hdmi 2.1. It has to be someone who games on next gen console or a graphics card and play competitive games and have the actual budget of having the next platform and tv.
    Edit: Also get this man a Gal Gadot he deserves it.

    There are two things I'd like to add, HDMI 2.1 is needed for fully supported Dolby Atmos, also you are thinking of 2020, most people would like to keep their TV for 3-10+ years, and in this time, Hdmi 2.1 will be implemented more and more, so it is still a good argument, when you buy a new TV.
    But on the rest, I'm with you.

    • @lecorsaire2283
      @lecorsaire2283 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not true. Only if you like to connect your Blu-ray player to your TV instead of AVR.
      Many 4K players even have two outputs. One for video and one for audio which can be sent to the AVR. So you have three ways to connect it:
      1. TV with sound via eARC
      2. Receiver
      3. Video to TV and sound to receiver
      Also many HDMI 2.0 TVs have eARC so this feature doesn’t even require a 2.1 chipset.

    I avoided 5/6 mistakes. As for the OLED burn in, I was worried about it but mainly my budget steered me away from OLED. I wanted a 75 inch tv and OLED was just unfortunately too expensive. $3K+ and then another 100 for a good Atmos soundbar. Was just too much :/

    • @dantasticmania8728
      @dantasticmania8728 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would honestly tell most people I know if your gonna make the leap to oled you really need.to.consider your average use.case scenarios. If play games at a very super causal or don't play games at all then a 2.1 120hz tv would utterly useless and an overkill to some extent. I tell most people to instead go with an LG A1 and now especially with them being at only $1300 for a.65' its a no brainer.

    • @lovemadeinjapan
      @lovemadeinjapan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Atmos soundbar... That made me laugh out loud. A sound bar is a single channel center speaker at best. Good for speech. You might be able to render a hint of 3.0 channels from a 5.1 signal, but then you need to sit less than the width of the bar distance in the middle. I don't care about surround myself, but under the TV is a 10kg center speaker, and on both sides it is 30kg floor standing speakers. That is proper 3.0 sound, I could mix in some subwoofer channel sound, but I don't, 80-20000kHz range will do. Atmos has all sound sources as separate streams with their precise 3D location. Try render that all on the same soundbar spot in the room.... They usually have like 30 speakers for Atmos in a theater.

    For the latest generation of consoles. The 120hz has been the single most impactful change moving from the previous generation for me. I play a lot of online and huge campaign experiences. It really is a game-changer as currently a lot of games that aren't particularly new experiences but are a smoother version of the older games. I do think downplaying the HDMI 2.1 is a mistake but I can see that at the moment the games list is limited. If they're buying a tv in 2020 they probably want it to last a few years and as the lists of supported games increases, there's only going to be more there missing out on.

    • @dushk0
      @dushk0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You think, and that's okay but it also is wrong. They are smoother because of the underlying hardware. Higher frequency is just a nice to have but yes, HDMI 2.1 is future proof. I think what he meant was mot to buy a smaller Tv within the budget constraints or not to compromise on the Tv that you really like just because another one has 2 to 4x HDMI 2.1 and I think that's great advice.

I think Vincent was a bit unclear as he didn't initially mention it alongside 4k120, which is going to be somewhat uncommon, but he later brought VRR up as being "only for gamers." VRR is useful for all gamers, unlike 4k120, but not for other content.

    Regarding size, I'd like to point out that it depends on the content you're viewing. Especially if you're mainly watching series, they're often shot expecting you to be able to simultaneously see the whole shot, while on the other hand a nature documentary might be shot more with the immersion in mind. In the former I'd want the whole screen within my focus view, while I'm the latter I'd want the screen extending into my periphery vision for the amazing immersion. I think this should be considered when selecting size, not only what you can physically fit

      This is part of the fear people have. You don't need a guide - just enjoy your OLED. As a general rule of thumb, don't have the OLED light at maximum - not that you'd ever need it cranked all the way up anyway. And secondly, vary your content. Lastly, make sure your pixel shift and logo luminance adjustment are both switched on and then... sit back and enjoy. It's not much harder than that.

    About HDMI 2.1 I just want to note a couple of things for gamers out there:
    1) HDMI 2.0 only supports 4K 60Hz with 8 bit RGB color. If you want to game using 10 bit color you need HDMI 2.1 And don't even try using 10bit 4:2:2 over HDMI 2.0 because it looks like absolute garbage.
    2) HDMI 2.1 at 40Gbps is sufficient to play at 4K 120Hz with 10 bit color RGB. So while it's upsetting TV manufacturers don't implement full bandwidth and try to deceive costumers into thinking they are getting the full 48Gbps chances are the limitation wont affect you in practice should you decide to buy a TV with gimped HDMI 2.1 in the near future.
    (Also note 48Gbps wont really make a difference in practice until we start seeing 12bit color TVs reaching 1-2000nits and beyond at a consumer level, so you don't really need to stress about it for now.)

      So what you're saying is going from a 2018 Samsung Q7FN to an LG CX is a big upgrade :o

      You don't need HDMI 2.1 for to get 10 bit though. There are lots of HDMI 2.0 10 bit panels since 2.0 supports chroma 4:4:4 and 10 bit color coding and it looks just fine. 2.1 goes up to 12 bit though but there aren't many 12 bit tv panels.

      Do I really need a 120hz tv if I'm not using it for gaming?

    Thank you for the giggles and the excellent information!
    Considering your humour is dry and the delivery is subtle! May I suggest using the bell all of the time, especially for our international viewers!
