    Hey buddy! Personally I REALLY LIKE these technical videos! They generally don't tend to do as well as other videos, but for what it's worth please know that some of us really EAT THIS STUFF UP! :)
    I battle those very same things when shooting live-action (ie. Can't seem to get enough light for that hungry lens!) but thankfully in stop-motion, I can set the shutter to basically whatever (I often use a 1-second exposure) and get the open depth-of-field, nicely exposed, with very little noise. I have a couple of Aputure's Amaran 200ds and really like them, but that 600D is CRAZY bright!!!!! I'm wondering about the fan noise on it. I imagine it's louder than average.

    • @AbandonedMiniatures
      @AbandonedMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So good to hear that Crafsman! I appreciate it. Yes, when I shoot stills it’s pretty easy but man does it need light for video!
      Haven’t done an interview with the 600D yet, but the noise doesn’t seem too bad. The controller box does have a fan as well though. Thankfully because of its power, you generally won’t be as close to a microphone with it and the fan sound shouldn’t be a big deal.

    One thing I like about Aputure is that how over the years they started producing real good quality fixtures. A couple of years ago it would have not been possible to get your hands on lights like these that easily. I've been using Arri lights a lot on set back in the days, but now I always go for Aputure.
    I said it before and say it again: I'm enjoying your content so much, because you also talk about the film making stuff. Keep it up, it's great content :)

      THIS!!! Yes it's like INCEPTION.... but backwards. We are pulling back each layer.. His amazing detailed minitures... which is ART LAYER 1... Then he photographs and films them beautifully... ART LAYER 2... and then he pulls back that curtain to teach US lighting and camera settings with ANOTHER camera filming him shooting with a camera, which is another art form unto itself... ART LAYER 3. A True Triple Threat! Awesome work!

    Curious. How do you decide what distance to set your lights at? Wouldn't you get brighter exposure by just moving your lights super close?
    Also, loved the intro haha.

    • @AbandonedMiniatures
      @AbandonedMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To make a long answer short, two things:
      I can’t get much closer without being in the way of the “outdoors” image.
      Generally I want hard light beams to show through the fog, and ideally I would have the light even further away to make it more of a hard source. The closer you get the softer the light becomes!

    Those doors are amazing!! Love this.
    I definitely think there's potential for a course on this, because it would apply to things like product photography as well. Your dioramas are pretty genre specific, but a course around this would appeal to a much wider audience than just this crowd ☺️ For example, I'm here because I'm about to build Paris. So even though I've been watching diorama building videos for months, I didn't find your channel till I asked TH-cam how to FILM them. Which tells me that your audience is much bigger than you might think. Dioramas seem to fall into four categories: old lady, Korean DIY miniature kit, horror / abandoned / old house, and D&D / WoW / Studio Ghibli. Weirdly, there aren't a lot of crossover elements... but this definitely counts.

    Fantastic job. Shooting miniatures is fine art on to itself. Scale, or I should say figuring out how small you can make something and still have it look good on camera, as well as have some ease of filming to create a realistic effect is the trick. The smaller the miniature the bigger the challenge. Cheers Man!

    Hey man, great video! I also have a connection to the film world and can definitely vouch for Aputure products. They also make some great little hand held lights for tight spots. I also fully understand how filming miniatures can quickly become a whole production in its self. Takes a while to set everything up and put it all away when your done but the extra effort is always worth it. Didn't know about the haze in a can - will look into it - I got a disco hazer but often end up using a tactical vape cloud for my smoke effects. Much love brother!!

    Ever do a rotting location wwith a spiral or 'grand' staircase? Even a wrought iron style staircase would be wild with rust, overgrowth and the killer lighting you use...could be a tricky but fun way to add some verticality to a diorama, allowing for a second floor. Could even have rotted holes through the ceiling between the 2 floors :)

    Do you ever have an issue with the smoke getting residue on your miniatures?

  • @maddocmiller6475
    @maddocmiller6475 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm wondering... wouldn't it be best to choose a camera that offers the highest possible QUALITY but with the SMALLEST SENSOR? This way, you could also reduce DOF. What would be the best camera with the smallest sensor that can deliver a highly professional output? I would definitely not go full frame for miniature shoots. Ideally, even below Micro Four Thirds.

    • @AbandonedMiniatures
      @AbandonedMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically, with a micro four thirds sensor you could get a deeper DOF with much less light, but there is no probe lens anywhere close to affordable with an equivalent focal length (which would be 12mm). So you either cannot get the camera inside the miniatures like this or you have a much tighter focal length, both kind of ruins the effect IMO.
      When shooting miniatures for real movies they would typically just make the miniatures in a much larger scale to compensate for some of these issues as well as having access to probe lens systems that can cost $100k+

    • @maddocmiller6475
