"Don't use two lights, you only need one light, is all you need". A couple days ago my three led lights with floor stands arrived, guess I'm over prepared now. Thank you for the awesome tips Emil, will try them later tonight.
I never would have imagined simply bracing a curled-up sheet of paper would produce such amazing photo results. They turned out beautifully. Thanks for saving me money I would have spent on a lightbox. ♥
If you ever go to a professional studio, this is exactly how the infinity backgrounds work. Its just a role of material on the ceiling and they bring it down onto the floor. Just like this. It works stunningly well.
I was having trouble with getting a proper reproduction of the colours I was seeing on the mini in my photographs. I got way into my head and tried all kinds of crazy things over the last year. Then this video popped into my feed. You brought me back to basics and reminded me that often, simple is best. This setup is great. Thank you.
Squidmar, I just had to come here and say a thousand thanks for this video. These simple instructions and advice have significantly improved upon my camera work when I'm taking pictures of my miniatures. As always your content is incredible!
It wont be perfect but you can do the same kind of setup with paper (or White cloth) and use indirekt sunlight as well. Ie put it pretty close to a window. It probably gets some colour a bit off, but its like 90% there and you dont need a lamp with a special bulb
That is an extremely useful video, wish I had seen it before I went through different light boxes first. I actually use the same method of taking pics now but the tip about moving source of light and placing the miniature to the front will come in handy for sure
Some very good tips on miniature placement. Good to know farther from the background is better. 👍 I'll also need to pick up a daylight LED bulb as well. Thankfully it's a tiny investment.
Good points Emil. I pretty much do the same thing with the same equipment (ie phone) and I get pretty good results. I'm going to take your advice and move my models closer to the front of the backdrop and see if that improves things. Thanks for the tips.
I had an offcut of bright white LED strip floating about. I stuck some empty sprues together in a loose \_/ shape, weaved the LED strip through it, so it stayed in place and cut a hole into the sprue to point a camera through and it's worked really well. No need to spend money on a light box.
Awesome tips for the phone camera! I used to prefer actual camera (for obvious reasons) and had quite some macro experience while scuba diving photography, but it was such a pain to extract photos from the camera to the computer 😞 Now thanks to you I can get quality-ish picture from phone and directly post them on social media 😅
I bought a lightbox once and was rather disappointed... I used a sheet of paper with an organic pattenr printed on it (like smoke or clouds) and that was totally fine. The quality of the phone obviously matters here... back in 2013 when I was using my smartphone (Samsung S3 here) it was rather difficult to take pictures without flash which were not shaky. So in the end it might make sense to buy a tripod to mount your smartphone.
what about defusing the light with a piece of paper in front of it have found great results doing such. along with using paper plates out side of the frame a reflector but that is mostly because i like to shoot with a black back ground so need more light onto the subject.
Great video. Could you recommend a few budget cameras please? Or would you say the current cellphone camaras are up to task. I just hobby paint miniatures and make dioramas. So it is just to capture the essence of my work without going overboard expending... thanks for the time
Great advice! Just wish i knew this before I bought my light box - but eager to try this out with my phone’s camera regardless and post a side-by-side on my IG.
As a photographer I must....agree! Effect from one light is good enough. One more thing, focal length is pretty important, it’s best to avoid shooting with lenses between 17 and 50mm
That's a great video Emil. Been faffing about with Photo equipment for ages to try and get a 'good look'. Simplicity is more! And saves on set up time 😉. Now, one thing I will ask, if I may? More than one miniature? I have just finished a Ogre Blood Bowl team and, as you know, being close to the camera has depth of field problems. Just bump up the F stop? Thanks for all of your 'squidly bits' tips. Keep 'em coming 👌👍
QUESTION : 1. Do you ever use the CCT functions? Or leave it one one function? 2. When taking photo's, what setting do you choose? What my eyes see may be different when absorbing colors. I have a syndrome where my eyes collect alot of light.
I may actually like this style of videos from you more. Quicker, feel more informative. Nothing wrong with more entertainment approach of the main channel, I just prefer this one.
Great video. Makes the idea of taking pics of minis isnt so difficult or expensive. Was wondering of you've ever done a video on your workstation? Really curious about it, looks like a "hobby zone" MDF prefab but never seen 1 with all the clear display cases.
Always great videos, thanks Emil. One question, you say to use 6500K bulbs, but looking at your "equipment used by squidmar" links, for the USA it goes to an Amazon link for 6000K bulbs, so kind of confusing? 6000k just as good as 6500k? thanks for a ll you do!
Hi, a bit late of a reaction. First of all I love this video! Great explanation and very clear to follow. Secondly, I have a question. I am starting to take more and better pictures of my minis, and my neighbour was so kind as to borrow me her canon eon m50. I was wondering what settings you use for iso and the such. I am really new to photography. Thank you in advance and have a nice day! :)
Hi I’m taking photos with the same set up, but using a iPhone 12. Pictures are good but I have horizontal lines across them. Any advice or may just get a digital camera for this
Also what apature do you recommend? Ive been doing f16ish (from GWs guide) but i feel it's not as sharp as it should be. Thanks for the awesome video 👍
@@squidlybits1985 Thanks. I though f16 was a bit small. The lens is Canon's 85mm 1.8 so I knew it wasn't because of that. I need a shorter one really but having just gone to the RP from a crop sensor it's the smallest full frame I have at the moment. Thanks again 😃
I totally was going to invest in a light box, but now I’m not going to waste my money. Thanks so much!

I was gonna make a light box, but turns out I already have the tools. This just saved me some time and money!
Oh boy another teacher to learn from*rubs hands eagerly* Trying to get my own channel/videos smoother and this looks perfect! Subscribed!
Ooooh I need more of this, I'm NOT a photographer and the pictures of my minies make me cringe. Thanks for the informative video.

I feel your pain.
So glad you've done a video on this at last Emil.
Really like those quick tips! 😃👍🏼
Perfect timing, planning to take photos for the first time this weekend!
This kind of content is GOLD!!! Thanks Emil!
Fantastic video! Thanks Emil!
Thanks Emil! These simple steps helped me to improve my photographs so much!!
Thanks for all the tips and also for listing the lamp you use; I've been looking for a good one for a while!
Oh my gerd - thank you for pointing to the light setting in the camera app!
Very helpful video! Excellent work!
Possibly the best advise at the moment for mini photography! Thank you so much!
Thanks, man. I always overthink these things and it leads to inaction on my part. It's nice to be reminded to keep stuff simple.
Short, and straight to the useful information. Thanks!
That last tip about not having your model too close to the back, never heard that one before. Will be giving that a go soon. Cheers!

This is literally one of the best videos I have seen on mini painting lights. Thanks so much squidmar!

This was great!! Ive done half the job right. Now mayby I get better pics 💪🏻 Thx Emil!
Extremely helpful video. Thank you
Salt n pepper squidley bits is my favourite!
Thanks for all the tips
This is an amazing video, thank you!
Definitely gonna try this ! thanks
I was actually looking a tutorial about taking miniatures pictures. Great tips, new subscriber it is.
This is sooo much helpful!!!
Man, Emil really stuck it to the lightbox lol Thanks for the awesome actual pro tips!
Thanks! I'll go try these tips right now
That was extremely informative and super quick. Thank you!

Actually, the only thing that would make it even better would be a short section on how to use black backdrop - this is still magic for me ;)

Very helpful thanks I've been working on a 2nd Warhammer channel too. And been having a lot of trouble with lighting amd taking photos/videos of them
Thanks! Awesome tips! Cheers
Amazing 🤩

Why would you avoid them and what would you use instead?
@@ThibChap this causes the image to bend and deform the subject you shoot at these focal lengths. It’s best to use lenses between 85-105mm

Brilliant, keep it simple, I do similar but I use black background, so I use a black tshirt, ikea light and Canon dlsr with stock lens
“And for making thunder”... hahahaha!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
awesome! Thank you so much for this!
Cheers for this.
Thanks for this video. I learned a lot. :)
Hello. Thanks for the Video. Whats the Name From the Lamp that you use for painting? Looks good
awesome bit!!!!
I just wait for a sunny day and take pictures in indirect light, and I'm pretty happy with the results
I use natural light too. I'm luck to have an eastern facing picture window that allows some nice exposure.
Oh shit I'm the like 2020, it's a bad sign!!😱🤣
Nice advices emil, really good video!
THANKS LOT BRO! this is super accurate, now can shooting my minis like a pro, great content here, insta subscribe
Thank you so much for this, Ive been wanting to up my photographs a bit

Just ordered my XL LED TASK LAMP. Tried to get one locally, but very little available and nothing strong enough. Thanks Emil.
This help for my minis I post on Instagram thanks 🙏
Great video
How would you go about photographing with a black background? If you really want to keep it dark, and not grey?
Move the mini further away from the background so you don't hit as much light there :)
2:56 - Emil, dammit, clean your lens!
Fantastic video, all my pictures of my minis look so bad that I was going to invest in so much stuff, now all I need is some a3 paper haha
I know this is an older video, but while watching it, I kept thinking my son was awake, and pausing the video!
This helps, my photos have always been hit or miss.
I'm still not over the name of this channel, I love it!!!
How would you go about getting a jet black background or pure white background without your miniature looking too dark or too bright?
I may actually like this style of videos from you more. Quicker, feel more informative. Nothing wrong with more entertainment approach of the main channel, I just prefer this one.
these are some great tips, i've tried using my lightbox and it always did terrible. now i know why :D
The squidlings contributed to the audio
If you want a black background instead of white: flip your mouse Pad over and use it instead of the piece of paper. Works pretty well for $0
i want that desk lamp
Great video. Makes the idea of taking pics of minis isnt so difficult or expensive. Was wondering of you've ever done a video on your workstation? Really curious about it, looks like a "hobby zone" MDF prefab but never seen 1 with all the clear display cases.
Great video! If you want a photo with a black background, is it as easy to just change to a black paper? Or is it anything else to think about?
Where can I buy the first light?
Thanks, Emil! Before I tried gw guide for miniature photos, but the results were not that great :P Gonna try this now
My friend. What is the make of that lamp?
yout light setting one row of leds or two,do you dim the lights to stop washing out the colours.
two rows :) go full power baby

what kind of lenses would you recommend
Do you have reccomendations for a good lens specs?
I like your Squidlibits
