    It's interesting to realize that neither Joel nor Marlene allow Ellie to make her own choice.
    Marlene doesn't because she doesn't know Ellie and fears she might say no.
    Joel doesn't because he does know Ellie and fears she will say yes.

      Joel wouldn’t of had the chance to ask Ellie though, Marlene wanted him gone and if he tried to talk to Ellie she wanted them to kill Joel. So Ellie was never going to get a choice and Joel was never going to be able to ask her. Plus if Ellie said she didn’t want to do it I highly doubt the firefly’s would let her leave.

      @@JBurnz001 I don't think Joel would have asked Ellie if he had the chance. He loves Ellie like his own daughter. Even Anna (Ellie's mom) lied to Marlene about cutting the umbilical cord before she was bitten to save Ellie. Tough choices to make when you love a child/daughter that much.

    While I think Ellie would have chosen to sacrifice herself, I don’t think that she really wanted to die. I think that she was experiencing survivors guilt and felt that if hadn’t have sacrificed herself then “what was it all for”.
    But I think once she gets over that pain and guilt, much like Joel after Sarah’s death, Ellie would start to find new reasons to want to keep going, through love, and the relationships she builds in Jackson’s that begin to heal her wounds.
    As we see in Part 2, Ellie felt that Joel robbed her of her meaning, and that that she should have died in that hospital. Although we then see her start to mend her relationship with Joel, and experience new love to the point where she is ready to try and forgive him. All before the inevitable.

      ITS SO HARD. On one hand, I believe it was wrong of Joel to rob humanity of that chance to return to normal. If saving Ellie truly did rob humanity of a cure then literally every single death after the end of Part 1 is all Joel's fault. (lil hyperbole but not really). Imagine the children that will be born into a world where they have fear of infected monsters is constantly rampant.
      Yet on the other hand, I would have done the exact same thing as Joel.
      There's also the other factors of the fireflies possibly not being able to produce a cure - then that would make Ellie's death pointless. Also the factor of Ellie not being able to consent, even if she had been able to consent and she said yes, she was still facing survivor's guilt like you said. Honestly, I don't know.

    What I think makes Ellie anger in season 2 at Joel so much more poignant is that by saving her Joel essentially made every bodies lives who has died to help get them there for nothing. In her mind Joel preventing her from going through with the operation meant Riley died for nothing, it meant Tess died for nothing, it Henry and Sam died for nothing.

    I don't think Ellie's sole purpose was to sacrifice herself.
    I think that's what Marlene *told* Ellie her purpose was, during a time when Ellie was traumatized over the loss of her best friend and first love - a loss she blamed on herself. Using her innate sense of selflessness to achieve her own goals.
    Did Joel just act selfishly, or was what he did the only way he could think of to save Ellie from a choice she would be manipulated into accepting?

    • @dragonsrule20201
      @dragonsrule20201 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ellie's devotion to being the cure is definitely a result of survivor's guilt, but it's still a strong innate motivator that I don't think should be attributed to Marlene. Ellie isn't easily manipulated; as you see in her conversations with Marlene and David, she has no problems telling authority figures to shove it when they're wrong. Only when they say something that resonates with her/is true, does she listen. We see this even before Riley gets bit; after Ellie gets in trouble at the military school, her conversation with the FEDRA officer leads her to introspect and even suggests that she and Riley work together to fix things, because she does actually feel passionate about being a protector of some kind, of dedicating herself to a cause. It's where she and Joel are very similar.
      Ellie is determined to go along with the quest, but I think what really hammers in her commitment is the loss of Tess, then Sam, then Henry. This culminates at the winter arc with David, where Ellie gets a real look at just how ugly the world can be outside of getting infected, *because* of the decay the infection has caused. It's more-so the universe continuously driving home the point that something needs done, and she's the only one who can do it. What are all those sacrifices that kept her alive for, if she doesn't pay them back? Riley was the first, but she's unfortunately far from the last loss.
      Joel's choice is such a pivotal part of everything for a reason; there's so much to it. The complexities of his selfishness vs his selflessness in the face of the daughter he loves, the complexities of Ellie's loyalty to her father-figure vs the betrayal she feels towards everyone else she's lost, the concept of wrong or right vs the question of does it even matter? This will all be expanded upon in Part 2 so I can't give my full thoughts without heavy spoilers, but I guess I just wanna say that it's definitely more complicated than that, haha. The opinion I've maintained since before Part 2 though is that Joel was in the right to save Ellie... Where he screwed up was in lying to her about it

    • @LeftyConspirator
      @LeftyConspirator ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dragonsrule20201 Ellie isn't easily manipulated to go against her nature, no, but when someone is trying to get her to do something she is already predisposed towards doing that's an entirely different matter. And especially when it is from one of the few people she trusts - such as Marlene.
      Maybe it was always a suicide run for Ellie, she had determined that she had to give her life for it to have meaning after so many had died around her. And maybe she was wrong. Maybe her life *could* have a meaning other than dying on an operating table during an experimental procedure that in all honesty probably wouldn't have worked. Joel had been there. It took him twenty years to find something new to fight for, but it happened. All because he didn't die that time when his guilt and loss told him that was all he had left to do.
      Joel and Marlene both made choices for Ellie. The difference being that Marlene's choice would have killed her, while Joel's gave her the opportunity to live and to go on to make choices of her own in the future.
      He's got that going for him.

      @dragonsrule20201 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeftyConspirator I initially typed up a much longer response but what I'll shorten it to is: I agree. I just thought it was necessary to point out that it is what Ellie strongly feels her purpose is, and I don't think she'd feel as strongly about it if she were simply manipulated. With that in mind, I also think it's important to balance the understanding that Joel ultimately did what was best for her, with the understanding that Ellie is entitled to her grief and upset that Joel lied to her. That final scene with her clear internal struggle before finally settling on "okay" is fantastic. Being the cure is NOT Ellie's purpose, but that's how she sees it, and that's what's important going forward. Perspective is everything in this franchise. I enjoy your reply a lot, and I'm very excited for people like you to eventually watch season 2 so we can have these discussions again!

Would she still have gone back to Jackson? stayed with the fire flies? That’s with the concept of course that somehow the roles were reversed

    • @dragonsrule20201
      @dragonsrule20201 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh absolutely not, lol. We already see what happens when their roles are reversed in the winter arc; Ellie steps up and makes Joel her number one priority. Ellie's devotion to the cure is not because of an innate sense of morality, it's because she feels guilt for the losses she experienced. To her, sacrificing herself is a way of evening the scales and making everyone else's sacrifice worth it to keep her alive, when she feels that she's been "left behind".
      If Joel were the cure, she would not think he had any obligation to die for it, and she especially wouldn't force him to. As she reiterates multiple times too, she really cannot handle another loss. I mean, in their conversation about his attempted suicide, Ellie says she's glad he missed. If Joel had died that day, it would save a countless amount of lives that he admitted were innocents he killed without much thought. But that doesn't matter to Ellie, because those innocents are not the person who has stayed beside her, who would do anything for her. They are both insanely loyal to each other to the point of destruction, and I think that's what is so compelling about their dynamic.

This is a 14 year old put through the most difficult choice that even an adult has a hard time to make. She blames herself for the death of Riley, Tess, Sam, and so many others. That's and unfair thing to put upon herself. It seems noble but even joel knows That's not right. Even if he didn't get to give her a choice the fireflies did make the situation worse. The moment they felt they could find a cure they instantly put her on the table to kill her. They took the choice from her first. And to make it worse remember the cure is NOT a guarantee. They think they can make a cure. And I've never heard of a neurological/virologist/epidemiologist/surgeon. That's a lot of fields for one person that I find hard to believe. So no I call B.S in that guy.

    As somone who loved tlou2 I think its gonna be hard to pull off season 2 as a big part of it was forcing you to play as other characters which forced the player to empathize w them the more they went through. Playing from other perspectives actually works better for T.V and film. Unlike games it's rare in other media just to follow just one characters perspective.

    • @dragonsrule20201
      @dragonsrule20201 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Etheral101 yeah I think what's going to be difficult is the non-linearity and immersion. Despite all the criticism, I LOVED the way they set up the timeline and the placement of all the flashbacks were perfect to be emotional gut-punches. I have doubts that that would work in a TV format though, unfortunately. Like Mazin and Neil have discussed, it can be difficult because in a game, you can just play for hours; in a show, there has to be a beginning and an end to every episode. That, in addition to the fact that Part 2 is going to be more than one season and viewers will therefore have to wait over a year for a full conclusion is definitely... Ambitious. I'm hoping for their success though, I truly hope season 2 is even more beloved than Part 2.

Idk- if I had the possible solution to a zombie virus my first thought wouldn't be "let's risk everything and kill what might be our only chance". Run every damn test you have no matter how irrelevant istg, don't just kill this child what could only be mere hours after she finally arrived.

    What I don’t understand is how people expected Joel’s decision to go unpunished in the second game. It’s like they expected him and Ellie to go on another adventure and ride off into the sunset together . What he did was satisfying for gamers who followed Joel, but to everyone else trying to survive and find a cure, it was fucked up and almost evil in a sense. Not only did he murder the only people trying to find a cure, but he also knew deep down she would’ve sacrificed herself for a chance at saving everyone. It’s what makes this story great, and what makes part 2 even better. I know it’s gonna destroy the internet again though, and whoever they cast as abbey better get a massive paycheque and shut down all social media cause it’s gonna be rough lol

I feel regardless Joel would of hunted down every firefly in the end for killing Ellie for no reason if their plan wasn’t successful! I feel like Ellie deserved a choice and I think she would of done it as a tribute to Joel, his daughter Riley and her mom Anna.
