I honestly clicked on it without any second thought, expecting something like an essay on Britten's works and their significance.
And here I am, 19 years old, remembering why I fell in love with the classic in the first place. The harmony, all kinds of single variations put together to create a completely new sound.
Guess it really deserves to be called "Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra", with how nicely it dissects the whole orchestra and lets us hear every possible layer of it.

Take out the commentary and you realise what a wonderful piece of music this is. That oboe section gives me goosebumps.

The original and the best. This was deservedly BBC Radio 3's 'Building A Library' top recommendation. I remember seeing a TV programme where Benjamin Britten was welcomed at the Royal Albert Hall, arriving to the strains of this work's rousing finale.

I still maintain that the strings counterpoint in the finale, during the repeat of the main Purcell theme, is the finest example since J S Bach. Genius.

Mike Ontiveros, if you can find a copy of the LP conducted by Britten, the liner notes deconstruct the orchestra by sections and then instruments in the sections and then reconstructs them.
