Benjamin Britten: (Illustrated) The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra Op.34 - with Peter Pears

  • UPDATE: I have added a clickable INDEX to the instruments/variations below.
    A great favourite of mine, "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" was composed by Benjamin Britten in 1945 (completed on New Year's Eve 1945 in fact) with a subtitle "Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell". It was originally commissioned for an educational documentary film called Instruments of the Orchestra, directed by Muir Mathieson and featuring the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. It was first performed in public in late 1946.
    In this 1955 recording, Benjamin Britten's lifelong partner, tenor Peter Pears, narrates. Mono recording, clearly transcribed from an LP record, it still shines - both in performance and historical importance.
    Courtesy of Wikipedia:
    "The work is based on the Rondeau from Henry Purcell's incidental music (1695) to Aphra Behn's Abdelazer, and is structured, in accordance with the plan of the original documentary film, as a way of showing off the tone colours and capacities of the various sections of the orchestra.
    In the introduction, the theme is initially played by the entire orchestra, then by each major family of instruments of the orchestra: first the woodwinds, then the brass, then the strings, and finally by the percussion. Each variation then features a particular instrument in depth, in the same family order, and generally moving through each family from high to low. So, for example, the first variation features the piccolo and flutes; each member of the woodwind family then gets a variation, ending with the bassoon; and so on, through the strings, brass, and finally the percussion.
    After the whole orchestra has been effectively taken to pieces in this way, it is reassembled using an original fugue which starts with the piccolo, followed by all the woodwinds, strings, brass and percussion in turn. Once everyone has entered, the brass are re-introduced (with a strike on the gong) with Purcell's original melody.
    The sections of the piece and instruments introduced by the variations are as follows.

    I could be wrong, but I think Pears was asked to use a slightly less "posh" voice than normal. He's certainly got it spot on for the microphone - nothing is over-projected. Britten must have been very pleased with the result.

    what does it mean by Op. 34?

    • @AntPDC
      @AntPDC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In musical composition, the opus (Op.) number is the "work number" that is assigned to a musical composition, or to a set of compositions, to indicate the chronological order of the composer's production. Opus numbers are used to distinguish among compositions with similar titles; the word is abbreviated as "Op." for a single work, or "Opp." when referring to more than one work.

    Orchestra Instruments - My Opinion
    Flute & Piccolo: The flute is beautiful and the piccolo sounds nice when it doesn’t hurt my ears
    Oboe: The oboe has a beautiful sound and it’s funny when it sounds like a duck
    Clarinet: My favorite instrument! The clarinet has a very beautiful sound
    Bassoon: The bassoon is the most beautiful low instrument, it melts my heart every time I see it
    Violin: The violin is a very amazing instrument, my favorite string instrument
    Viola: The viola sounds so nice, too bad people make unfunny jokes about it
    Cello: The cello is a very nice instrument, second favorite low instrument (the bassoon is my first)
    Double Bass: The double bass is a very cool instrument, though its lowest notes sound like the ground is shaking beneath my feet
    Harp: The harp is such a heavenly instrument, an instrument an angel would play
    French Horn: The French horn has such a nice sound and it’s kinda ridiculous that its bell is so huge
    Trumpet: The trumpet is a amazing instrument, my favorite brass instrument
    Trombone & Tuba: The trombone and tuba are both wonderful instruments, the slide makes the trombone stand out
    Percussion: The percussion is the nosiest instruments in the orchestra, my favorite percussion instrument is the xylophone

    I blushed at the bassoon, don’t judge
    Edit: I don’t know why I blushed at the bassoon but it’s my favorite low instrument and it catches my attention in a blink of an eye. I guess that’s life as a bassoon fan.

  • @ariannagorbet6674
    @ariannagorbet6674 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In elementary school, I thought the bassoon (the wooden body) was red. I didn’t know barely anything about the bassoon back then, I only knew the basics (the bassoon is a woodwind, it plays low, etc...) Now I know that I was a little off (I learned that the bassoon is monogany not red.)

    • @AntPDC
      @AntPDC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Arianna. The bassoon, being a woodwind instrument, could be made of any type of wood, of any colour, but maple has always been the favoured material. Nowadays even plastic materials are used!

      @@Altanis1 Where is the "fallacy" in my comment? And I don't "continuously stress that musical elements need to be taught". On the contrary, I love music for what it is, and have always considered the mechanics secondary to that. What have you got against the teaching of musical skills: of instruments, of theory, of performance? Music is among the World's most important art forms. Why so hostile?
