- The fourth Maker’s Mark® Wood Finishing Series may be the easiest way to taste your way through the rickhouse. The name BRT was given to these expressions because of the consistent practice of hand-barrel rotation (BRT) and temperature has on the whisky process. Made to be enjoyed as a pair, BRT-01 is inspired by the tasting notes found at the hotter top of the rickhouse, and BRT-02 is inspired by tasting notes found at the cooler bottom. Both are found for about $60 and bottled at 109.4 proof.

Don't forget, its not just the rick house location, one of them is finished with American Oak and the other is finished with French Oak.
Yeah, would almost be more interested in 6-8yr age stated top floor and bottom floor releases.
yeah, and I don't know how they're both the exact same proof if one was aged entirely on top floor and the other on bottom
Need a 03 and 04 swapping French oak staves on the top and American oak on the bottom for a real comparison on location.
Ahhh! There is a store in San Diego (Wooden Cork) that has a special Maker's made with 10 French Oak staves . . . named in honor of the Coronado bridge

Blending the FAE 01 with the 02 was definitely the way to go with last year's release. I was one of those people you were referring to that while watching the video was saying- I hope he blends them...

Was able to finally get both of these and have to say your tasting notes are spot on - much closer to my experience than some other reviews. Love both, and which I reach for depends on how I'm feeling that day, but the 01 is just dessert in a glass, so if I had to choose just one, that would it. The burnt sugar, butterscotch flavors are undeniable. Thanks for the review!

I like the description of both and while I lean towards the darker fruit, it will come down to my taste buds to decide!!

Always love the end blend. I recently found an amazing Maker’s pick which on its own is lights out. Then I kicked it up a notch with some Larceny barrel proof blended in. Next level good. Give that a try with these.

I picked up the BRT 1. A couple of days ago. Was delicious. Your Nose and Tasting notes were spot on. Haven’t seen the BRT 2 yet here in VA. But did pick up a Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit State Pick today. Haven’t tried it yet but he last one of those I bought was Great. Can’t go wrong with Wild Turkey

Favorite one so far was FAE 01. Was able to grab a couple last year at retail so hoping to find these releases this year

Great job! Love how you get to the point quickly without going on and on with everything you nose. Some reviewers keep picking out so much I think they have read about it first? I think I would go for the 1 I prefer a little sweeter!
When my bourbon group tried the pair, we said BRT-01 tasted just like a stroop waffle. I normally lean towards spice, oak, and cinnamon, but, surprisingly, I preferred BRT-01. That sweet pastry and caramel was just too much. I also blended my samples… I would rate it BRT-01, BRT-03, BRT-02

I picked up the BRT 2 and love it. It's unique there are subtle flavors that I am still working on pulling put. Would live to puck up BRT 1 as well. MM is killing it with these releases and I'm my opinion it has totally elevated the brand with these as well as the private select series which are great too.

Before I discovered a big world of bourbons and scotch’s, when I was just drinking to get a buzz, I discovered Makers Mark. I realized you didn’t need to drown in sugar, pop or juice, just enjoy the characteristics of the spirit. I got more bottling’s of Makers then any other bourbon brand. (Scotch is another story, my Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Compass Box selection is ridiculous lol) Cheers, definitely keeping my eyes peeled for these 🥃

Makers home stay for me one of the best all around bourbons default bourbon of choice available in most bars in the US. Would have to go for the darker one for me but both seem delicious.
MM coming through again it seems! I can't wait to get my hands on at least one of these! Even if MM isn't your jam on flavor profiles. I feel you gotta respect the way they do these releases. Possible to find and relatively affordable. And if it is MM is your jam the quality is there on these kind of releases.
Great channel. I prefer BRT-02 but I have nothing bad to say about BRT-01. My palate picks up more complexity from 02 with a creamier, smoother feel and a longer finish. Though, I wouldn't complain at all if stuck on an island with a case of 01. Both are great releases. I appreciate your reviews. Thanks and Cheers!

just found these yesterday in NY for $80 each. after hunting them for months. in the collection with the other WFS's. have only tasted the FAE02, which is fantastic.
I bought both, but I like BRT-01 a little bit more. That said...dude, these are BOTH incredible, just DIFFERENT!
Maker's Mark R2D2. Love it. Just got BRT-02 at my local. Strolled in looking for a rye and ended up with BRT-02. I hope I like it. I think the guy before me bought BRT-01 based on this review and left BRT-02 for me to find. I hope to enjoy it and maybe get BRT-01 so I can form BRT-03.
Big Maker's fan. Great visitor experience at the distillery. Love their marketing and the private selects. But yeah the names on these are so damn confusing. Picked up the FAE-02 this summer...but I like my 46 Cask much more.
just picked up a Maker's Mark Private Select VA abc pick, 'hint of chocolate' they call it, Fantastic bottle!
I randomly found a bottle of BRT-01 at my local liquor store today (6/14/23) for $60. I’m not quite sure how they still had that one since it was a 2022 release, but I was happy to find it on National Bourbon Day! I was lucky enough to find a BRT-02 last fall and I get heavy butterscotch notes from it after the bottle had a chance to open up. I’m looking forward to trying the BRT-01 now.
I saw BRT 1/2 at a Father’s Day release this year. And just saw 6 BRT-01 today and a small town liquor store. I almost grabbed one since I have only had pours of it. I will be back in the area in a couple weeks so I may have another chance.
I found a BRT-01 today in a liquor store in a smaller rural town in Illinois while out hunting...today's date is 12/12/23 lol

Man... it kills me that nowhere around me seems to be getting this. Makers CS is one of my go-to bourbons and this sounds amazing.
I was able to grab two of each expressions today at ABC in Virginia.
Picked up both for $58 each, always look forward to a Makers Release.

Haven't had these yet, but so far, SE4xPR5 is my favorite.
I would go BRT 01 over BRT 02, Phils over cards, Pads over Mets, we see the bobble on the barrel. Nice review, I was sitting there waiting on the blend too.
Based on your description, I would go for the 01. Big fan of butterscotch notes. Do you have any other recommendations for butterscotch heavy bourbon?
Maybe I missed it, but it’s really not just about the locations. They’re both finished in different woods. That’s the big differences

my thoughts exactly on the blend. Makes sense those heavy notes of 2 overtake 1. Kinda like an extra-aged oaky bourbon

I THINK I prefer the BRT-02.... but I need to have my wife help me conduct a blind between them for the truth. I generally go for "sweet and smoky" over "light and fruity". But I DO love me some butterscotch and caramel.
Your next Mash and Journey Makers pick can be called R2D2. How do you think BRT-02 compares to FAE-02? I wonder how much the French Oak played into the profiles of those. Wouldn't the blend be BRT 1.5? Great review!

I just did a side-by-side with the BRT-01 and the Maker's 46 cask strength, and the 46 cask strength wins for me at a lower price...I encourage everyone to try this. I'm wondering if the blend of the BRT-01 and BRT-02 comes closer to the 46 cask strength...so far i haven't been able to find the BRT-02.
Any of my DFW people know where I can find these at MSRP?
I would've assumed the higher location would've had more dark characteristics
from what i understand, the highest floor barrels of the rickhouse are the ones that go up in proof whereas the lowest levels of the rickhouse can lose proof. the brt 1 probably had to be proofed down more, meaning more water added after all that time in the barrel, making it 'lighter' as you said when comparing, imo that's due to the extra water the brt 1 received.
huh, i figured they were both cask strempf. I'll have to dig into this. Let me know if you find out any evidence to the BRT-01 having water added.
These releases are not actually pulled from different parts of the rick. Maker's is simply replicating the different flavor profiles they get from the top and bottom racks by using different finishing staves. A bit gimmicky and misleading on their part. Would be much more interesting if they actually did pull liquid from specific parts of the rick house as they suggest.
I really enjoyed the SE4 x PR5 so I will try ro find the BRT -01. My local store gets private barrel selections of the stave series. Their current selection has 5 different types of staves and is excellent.

This whole barrell rotation confuses me. If they rotated their barrels then wouldn't all of them be aged at some point both at the top and bottom of the rickhouse? To make an expression just to represent the top would imply never rotating those barrels.
Yep thats basically what they did. Along with finishing them with different staves.

If they didn't then I'd think the name would be NBRT(no barrel rotation) and if they did then I'm back to wondering how they can say the "top floor barrels were like xyz" if those same barrels were actually on the bottom floor at some point. Sorry for being thick on this.

This goes against everything I thought about rickhouse location. Higher is hotter, and should have more barrel interaction. I’ve had breakfast with Bill Samuel in Loretta, and haven’t tried these, but it seems backwards?

I dont do final breakdowns off of samples normally. They are meant to be quicker episodes.
