What a dream come true, right? Imagine the most expensive books there like Action 1 or Detective 1 were still under 100k and Batman 1s could be found for under 10k.
I was there as a kid all it was comics nerds, autographs from creators were free and it cost $10 to get in I miss those days I still have some of those comic gems to this day !
“New comics like Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” It’s 2023 and Turtles are STILL absolutely massive. Amazing footage of Kevin Eastman and that OG Playmates booth.
So the Lady you saw WAS the real voice of Rocky the Squirrel. She's in another video on TH-cam. Nobody seems to notice who she was, even the guy interviewing her.
This video reminds me of the days when I started going to the San Diego Comic Con. I went to it from 1985-1991. Had a great time and great memories of those trips.
'85? Cool! I was at '88 then came bk in '91 & the growth then seemed massive. Wish I was less focused on just back issue hunting but as a young kid w/ just 7-11 spinner racks, the con was overwhelming. Still, in '91 I found a cheap LONGSHOT art pg then got to meet my idol Art Adams to sign it. Good times.
Back then it didn't cost a huge cash layout just to get through the door, and there were no separate ticket cost packages to really nickel-and-dime the hell out of you. So you had less money spent just getting in so you could have more to spend on the comic books and stuff. Plus you didn't have "convention prices" where every sleazy seller took that whatever that normally costs $5 and wants $20+ for it at the convention.
I love comics and I'm a big kid too bro, it can get so boring growing old at 51 so i try to stay young minded at all times by collecting comics, toys and games.
Have you seen all of the DC comics and Marvel panels. I'm so excited for the Between Two Toms panel - DC's Tom King (Wonder Woman) and Tom Taylor (Titans) are kicking off San Diego Comic-Con together by discussing comics, and more. Celebrity guests between the Toms this year will include Nicola Scott (Titans) and Mitch Gerads (Batman: The Brave and the Bold). Room 6DE. I love Tom Taylor and Tom King they are just killing it right now. Did you see Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow got nominated for a Hugo?
Are you excited for all the DC Comics panels. Dawn of DC with Joshua Williamson (Knight Terrors) with special guests Jeremy Adams (Knight Terrors: Green Lantern), Dennis Culver (Knight Terrors: Zatanna), and Gotham City panel featuring Tom King, Tini Howard, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Ram V, Belén Ortega. I'm so excited!
What comics are you reading lately? I'm very excited for Tom King's wonder woman coming out in september and Jonathan Hickman's ultimate universe reboot. I love Hickman. His Avengers run got me into marvel.
I disagree tbh. I think having tv shows and movies as well as books and novels is pretty awesome. Just make the comics the main show. I think that it's pretty awesome that you can find sci fi and fantasy art as well in conventions.
I'm reReading Justice League 1987. I collected all 60 issues before 1993, but took me 3 decades to gather them all. Finally found the last two issues to complete it a few years ago, but my,collection was a 1000 miles away. When I was able to put those two issues in the box, it felt like finishing a puzzle.
Man, I’d kill to go back in time to dig through some of those boxes. Before back issue bins were destroyed and stuffed with early Image and Valiant books
It's cool to see that cosplay was already a thing back then. It wonder what happened to the Trekcon and star wars con that used to be frequent but more concentrated on only the movies?
Ah, those were the days. I was at every single San Diego Comic-Con from the beginning until it became so commercialized in 2009. Now I avoid it like the plague.
How collecting has changed. While most comics are bagged, none of these books seem to have a backing board. When I started collecting in the early 80's, bags were readily available, however backing boards were not, in fact I had to make my own out of bristol board or heavy paper stock if I could find it. Hard to tell what shape that Walt Disney Comics #1 is, maybe a fine, but a 9.4 goes for 50 G's now, so I would say it was a decent investment, although it probably didn't gain that value except in the past 10-15 years. What I would give to be able to go back to that time period in the early Con days with a fistful of cash and a cargo van. lol.
, congratulations on everything, and many more years , wish there was more comic book conventions on the east coast as much as is on the west coast does, im gonna watch all the free comic con for SD CC 2023 videos
Ikr? People pay upwards of a thousand dollars, to see movie trailers, commercials and toys behind glass. Whatever happened to it just being about the comics?
I wonder what Action Comics#1, Detective Comics #27 and Amazing Fantasy#15 cost back then? I have always had the dream of running into a yard sale or garage sale and finding boxes of golden age and silver age comics that are dirt cheap but at this point it is about like trying to hit the lottery.
Holy moly! There was hardly anyone at these back in the day compared to now.... tens of thousands of people with lines for blocks, can barely walk, expensive ticket & autograph prices, etc. I'd never go to SDCC today. Way too packed & over priced!
I’m glad comic conventions evolved and grew in this new generation people you see in video now have tripled if comic cons stayed like this now you see less people you never see news media cover comic cons it be nothing to look at as polka music dance group
Back in the days when life was simple and carefree, this convention and many others like it where "made by fans for the fans". Now the power hungry corporate "grease-rats" that controls Hollywood, took over this convention and ruined it!! It's overhyped, overpriced, over crowded, it's WOKE, and it's rigged!! So ridiculous that tickets for this con gets sold out in less than 5 minutes once they go on sale online!!! Today's Comic-con aint the same anymore, my friends and I call it "Hollywood-con". I am sure glad we stopped going when the con started going downhill!!! All good things come to an end, nothing lasts forever!!
When I first started collecting comics, Action Comics #1 was just over 40 years old… now, I have comics in my collection that I bought from a spinner rack (brand new) that are older than that. It’s scary how time slips away.
Gee golly ... What a keen event. Conan the Destroy was such a disappointment when I was a kid ... Just a pale knock off of the genius of the first movie.
I wish I could go back in time and go through those long boxes! I’d go nuts!
Better go find money with predate 1980 before you go. Lol.
What a dream come true, right? Imagine the most expensive books there like Action 1 or Detective 1 were still under 100k and Batman 1s could be found for under 10k.

My grail is in the first few seconds of this clip,More Fun comics #54.Mind you the sub-mariner beside it is 750 dollars, big money back in 1980
Its amazing to see so many comics at a comic convention....once upon a time.
I like this atmosphere of the Fandom. Comics are still cool. Regardless of the time.
Now it's just cosplay and celebrities
I was there as a kid all it was comics nerds, autographs from creators were free and it cost $10 to get in I miss those days I still have some of those comic gems to this day !
The news reporter didn't catch on that the lady looking for Rocky and Bullwinkle comics was June Foray, the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel.
I think they did but would have helped to have ID on screen
“New comics like Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” It’s 2023 and Turtles are STILL absolutely massive. Amazing footage of Kevin Eastman and that OG Playmates booth.
Funny that she says TMNT is for "little kids"...the majority of people I know into TMNT are "big kids" like Kevin Eastman! lol
Love that Kevin Eastman is in this and he was at SDCC 2023 being a big kid still
So the Lady you saw WAS the real voice of Rocky the Squirrel. She's in another video on TH-cam. Nobody seems to notice who she was, even the guy interviewing her.
This!
I was searching this because I recognized her voice for Rocky and then at the end dropped to her normal voice. And yes the reporter knew.
I knew right away when I heard her speek, I was like no way 😊 but also I'm almost 50 lol
June Foray! Absolute legend

Ha, I am in this video at 1:29. A group of us in Battle of the Planets costumes, and some other friends! Wow!
Back when SDCC was about COMICS and not about Hollywood blockbusters.
I can’t believe it’s be n 3 days since the 80s already. Time flies.
I can only imagine that time. No social media to allow for posers. Just people around the world united by a sole love of comics, period.
Happiness before the flood of 9.8 slabs the good ol’days😍😍😍
This was amazing. Thanks for putting it together. 👍

That $1200 Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #1 is easily 6 figures today. Hope he kept it in good condition.
it looked like it had major colour touch on the spine.
I wish I had a time machine!
I wish Comic Con would get back to basics and get away from movies and TV shows.
😊😊

What an ending!!!! TMNT fan for life!!
Nothing has changed …yet everything has changed
Interesting. The '85 clip "attracting people as far away as Yorba Linda". Did I hear it was held in Rancho Bernardo at one time?
The evolution of the backing board in the video. I loved those times around 1981.
The prices on those golden age comics from 1980 have skyrocketed drastically!
6:24 what’s this turtles thing the kids are talking about ?!
Wow back then it was actually really about comic books now days its about comic books, bust, action figures, status, shirts, masks, helmets, and more 😀
wow, so they actually had comic books at the original SDCC!
The irony of how they looked at all these people strangely contrasts with how it's presented now.
Excellent footage 📽️🎬🎥🎦
Man, I’d kill to go back in time to dig through some of those boxes. Before back issue bins were destroyed and stuffed with early Image and Valiant books
WONDERFUL!! thanks so much!
Oh my the way they were holding the comics...oh dear😮😮. Ah to have a time machine, i would be beside myself. 😊😊
She is the voice of "Rocky: The Flying Squirrel!" June Foray herself!!! Did anyone else catch that?
Yes .. she was cute too.
It's cool to see that cosplay was already a thing back then. It wonder what happened to the Trekcon and star wars con that used to be frequent but more concentrated on only the movies?

I remember coming across comic books with backing boards as early as 1982 here in Texas, and the ones shown in the long boxes all appear to have them.
I wish I could time travel back and pick up all really expensive grail at 80s prices. Before the CGC grading system Era 😊🎉

Thanks to Shel Dorf!👍 RIP Shel!🙏
Legend has it the mustache haunts comic conventions to this day.
4:44 The Real Wonder Woman 1985
Imagine hitting a toys r us back then…..?
Wow my first seeing a co- creator of TMNT and at the time when it was new!
7:23 true to his fukn word! Legend 🙌
Wow imagine that actual comics at at comic con ...
Wish I could've gotten there, my cousins lived in San Diego but when we finally visited in 1982, my family had to go in June, so I missed it.
My, how it changed!
Ikr? People pay upwards of a thousand dollars, to see movie trailers, commercials and toys behind glass. Whatever happened to it just being about the comics?
5:15 the real life “Comic Book Guy” from The Simpson! “Worst sword ever.”
Everyone is slim and healthy looking. What the hell happened, America?
I was thinking the same, i was watching a San Diego 2023 con walkthrough video the other day and 80-90% of the people were overweight or obese, smh
back when these were super fun , not very expensive and no MCU or DCU
I wonder what Action Comics#1, Detective Comics #27 and Amazing Fantasy#15 cost back then? I have always had the dream of running into a yard sale or garage sale and finding boxes of golden age and silver age comics that are dirt cheap but at this point it is about like trying to hit the lottery.

Awesome 😊😊😊voice comics. They’ve become an established collectible and long term store of value
