    Scaggs wrote this song with the keyboard player David Paich, who would later form the band Toto and write many of their hits. "Lowdown" was the first song that Scaggs and Paich wrote together; it was Silk Degrees producer Joe Wissert who put them together. Along with keyboard player David Paich, two other future Toto members also played on this track: drummer Jeff Porcaro and bass player David Hungate. The Silk Degrees marked the first time that Scaggs used these studio pros, and it was also his first album produced by Joe Wissert, who was a staff producer at Columbia Records who had previously worked with Earth, Wind & Fire.
    In a Songfacts interview with Boz Scaggs, he explained: "We took off for a weekend to this getaway outside of LA where there was a piano and stayed up all night banging around ideas. We hit on 'Lowdown,' and then we brought it back to the band and recorded it. We were just thrilled with that one. That was the first song that we attempted, and it had a magic to it."
    The song is about a girl who doesn't appreciate what her man gives her. The "dirty lowdown" is the honest truth - what Scaggs is encouraging this poor sap to face. The word "Lowdown" was popular slang meaning a summary of what's going on for real.
    This won the Grammy for Best R&B Song of 1976, making Scaggs the first white artist to win the award.

      "Down two then left" is on par with "Silk degrees" in my opinion. 1974-82 Scaggs was the very top of the tree, for raw vocal talent and musicianship. Why he isn't in the R&R hall of fame is an absolute disgrace.

    Boz is an interesting artist in that he wrote or co-wrote most of his biggest hits. He has a lot of soulful, funky songs about gangsters and people in trouble, but he has just as many beautiful, heartbreaking love ballads. "We're All Alone", "Heart of Mine", "You Can Have Me Anytime", and "Look What You've Done to Me" are all terrific love songs.

      BOZ came to tiny Sheffield Alabama in 1969 to launch his solo Career. Along with Duane Allman and the Mighty Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, the result was another Legendary song, LOAN ME A DIME. Look around and you can read about the recording sessions in the famous Burlap Palace! Sky dog Duane Allman was placed in the same bathroom where Keith Richards had written Wild horses a couple of months before. Its an extremely entertaining article!

    I think this is one of your most energetic reactions I have seen. It is indeed a great song!! Never gets old no matter how old or how many times you listen to it. Timeless.

    I saw Boz Skaggs in concert a few years ago in downtown Los Angeles. It was a great show and he is a very likable fellow.

    Boz has been a fave of min since the late 60s. He started out with the Steve Miller band but quickly went solo. His first self titled album came out in 1969 and had Duane Allman backing him up. Recorded at the famous Muscle Shoals Sound studio along with the Muscle Shoals Rythym Section and the Memphis Horns. Here's one of the best known cuts on that first album. It was cut down to 4:30 for the album but here is the full 13: take;

    I like the way this flips the usual call-and-response between singer and BVs. They go "I wonder, wonder, wonder, wonder who" and he continues with "taught her how to talk like that?".

    Last yr my boyfriend went to sit in with a band as a singer . Just jammin’ in the Berkeley hills with a bunch of fifty somethings in a beautiful living room. There was a drummer , bass , keyboards guitar and guy plying a pretty wicked flute . They suggested this song . By boyfriend had never sang it and after one a quick run down they played it and it was magical . I have it on video . One of my fav songs of all time . They did a helluva job for just one try .

    lol I Knew when you heard this, you would lose your mind because you know good music when you hear it. That's him playing the lead guitar too. You should check out his live performances - they're just as good as the studio. Great reaction!

    Glad to see lots of reaction channels discovering this song. What a MONSTER hit this was back in the day. On black radio stations, white radio stations, at parties, in nightclubs, close enough to disco that disco fans didn't hate it, but so funky that people who hated disco still loved it.
    Fun fact: SO many people thought this singer was black that seeing the album cover for the first time was a freak out experience for a bunch of folks!
    Listen up kids: that is what a real person playing drums sounds like--that out of this world groove is NOT a drum machine. It is the late great Jeff Porcaro when he was just an effing teenager (before Toto)

    Came across this song while watching tiktokers Aubrey Fisher and Vik. They do a couple dances to this song but my favorite is the one in front of the big open window. After a little searching, I found Boz Scaggs' song. Fantastic!
