Marine Viet Vet 68-69. Only thing we had on our 60's that you could call an accessory on ours were the "Bug out " handle. The bipod was standard as the bug out handle. Carried a barrel bag, with extra barrel tools asbestos glove for the barrel change when needed. TRI pod was only carried when in a permanent position such as on an Arti Base. 5 round bursts were the standard op for these. Never placed the Gun on top of fighting hole or sandbags until dark so the NVA wouldn't know their location if they hit us at night. An RPG took out one my guns and killed the gunner. The A-Gunner was gathering more ammo at the time so he wasn't hit.
Truth comes in 6-9 round bursts, but in my case continuous burst on target was what we fired. Being a door gunner on a C model Huey gunship we fired an entire 200 round belt in one pass, changed barrels and loaded another 200 round belt for the next pass. Sometimes at night the barrel would become translucent from the heat and you could see the round going down the barrel. The hotter the barrel got the further we would stick it out the door to try and cool it in the airstream of the Huey...

Hi John...As a (one-time) infantryman, it was interesting to follow the improvements from the E0 or E1 models I was trained on. But it also brought back memories of spending an entire weekend up to my elbows in dirty solvent cleaning dozens of the beasts while missing out on weekend leave. Great Review. I carried the original M60 during the Vietnam Era. When the Army changed to the M16 and went to the smaller 5.56MM Ammo the M60 became even more important as it fired the heavier 7.62 ammo. You can cut down trees with the old Pig as we used to call it. When ambushed it was usually the deciding factor in a firefight as its heavy caliber and rate of fire would suppress most enemy firefights. But it was heavy at 26 pounds unloaded. Everyone carried an extra ammo belt for the Gunner. The bad thing about being the Gunner was the enemy often firred RPG's at the M60 to suppress it! I do believe we copied the German Army MG 42 for the design of the M60. Thank you for your great reviews.
I did a combat tour in VN. The 60 or as we called it the “pig” was feared by the enemy. During a firefight you could hear the different sound of the 60 over the 16’s and the AK’s. It was a heavy weapon at nearly 25 lbs with a 50 round belt. We had one 60 per squad. Firing long burst’s would heat up the barrel. The assistant gunner AG….. would carry gloves and an extra barrel…… in addition to extra belts of ammo. Great weapon!

Everyone on the Ship's Security Force was required to train on the 1911 pistol, M14 rifle, M60 machine gun and Remington 870 Combat model shotgun. My favorite was M14 but followed very closely by the M60! Thanks for the memories. We also had these mounted on four locations port/starboard fore & aft while in the Persian Gulf (Desert Shield/Storm) along with 40mm mounts mid-ships to fight off small boats, much cheaper than a missile.
We had these in HARNG (Hawaii Army National Guard) - I was in a Combat Engineer Unit - trained with them at Ft Ord in the early 70's ... the tracers in the belts were excellent at helping get on target and stay there. My grandpa was a shotgun rider/ crew chief on a huey in Vietnam, quan Loi. He has his m60 on a bungee cord and he sat on his vest instead of wearing it on his chest. The bullets where coming from straight up.
I've never fired one of these, us Brits had the L7 version of the FN MAG back in my time (80's-90's) I think you have a version in service there as the m240Bravo, there was no way I could handle that from the shoulder as well as you handle that E4, you make it look easy... we didnt have that fancy box to hold the belt so we used to tie strap a '58 pattern waterbottle pouch on the left side and use that to keep the belt squared away .. happy days.. but it wasnt fun humping it around...
I got to play with the M60 during my time in the Army. By far, the most fun I had with any weapon. The gun just kicks ass. Even with blanks and MILES gear. You're just mowing people down. Just a suggestion, next time you rock a machine gun you should get some b-mod targets and set them up in different squad formations. Used to maintain proficiency like that. It is very fun. Anyway thank you for continuing to produce awesome content!!
Also I would have loved to see you walk out and show the carnage on the steel barrels that you were firing through up close. Or that ammo crate.
It’s crazy how you and your dad sound identical, pauses in sentences, way you speak everything identical lol
Great video John...tons of info and history of this amazing weapon.
My grandpa was a shotgun rider/ crew chief on a huey in Vietnam, quan Loi. He has his m60 on a bungee cord and he sat on his vest instead of wearing it on his chest. The bullets where coming from straight up.
The brass ejection pattern is Visual ASMR for me…
I was trained to fire in 7 to 11 round bursts. It lengthened the time between needing to change barrels. They don't cool down fast.
I’d love to shoot something like this someday. Just to feel its power.
Respect to anyone who used this in service
Your dad is an American treasure. He should be recognized more
If I could spend one day hanging out with these guys shooting all kinds of guns I would die a happy man
WOW that's a thing of beauty!! Zero muzzle jump! Awesome video. Maybe a little bit much yakitty yak but still awesome
Bring back the OG Hickok!!
I used that gun for training in the Air Force, its a beast.
I’d like to see a Remington 870 field master, and maybe a wing master review
Ah yes I love to hear you make that beautiful pig squeal with joy. I believe that was Mack who was the 60 gunner in Predator. Excellent video ! 😊👍
Awesome display John i love that version and of course I’m a huge Rambo fan !!!
Oh my... that pun at the end. Brutal. A great gun for "da fence".
The sound of the M60 is as hot as the barrel churning out the rounds in this video
Tears of the sun is a great movie, definetly a favorite of mine ..very powerful and moving movie
Brings back memories
EVERYBODY Loves an Electric Typewriter 🤣🤣
Even a Tennessean can get squirrels with that😜 Super video but where's Hickock, hope he's feeling up to snuff.
I got to play with the M60 during my time in the Army. By far, the most fun I had with any weapon. The gun just kicks ass. Even with blanks and MILES gear. You're just mowing people down. Technically, NOT "people", but "equipment". On a completely unrelated subject, every soldier wears web gear, which is considered equipment. So, yeah. Just mowing people down.
