This level of graphics (with no slow-down) is amazing for such an early Genesis game. Looks great even now, 33 years later. And the game play is fantastic of course.
22:48 FUN FACT, the developers never intended for the intermission movement of the BGM in this stage to coincide with the initial appearance of the Noh Spectre boss. The timing was purely incidental, but they admitted it was totally awesome!!
Though I'm not a big fan of the shooter genre, I must admit this is one of the highest-quality shooters (if not THE highest) and console games overall that I've ever seen. Every tiny bit is smooth and solid and craftingly incorporated into the whole package, nothing sticks out, everything's 'just right'.
Shame it's ridiculously easy to the point of being boring, unlike previous titles on the series. The series has always been very easy, but this one takes the cake. I finished it without continues the 1st time I played it, losing my first life on the big purple ball boss just before the final boss. Second time I played it I finished it without dying.
Play it on hard. Problem solved. If you die on the later levels, it's tough as hell to get your ship back to par without successive deaths. But I do agree easy and normal are a tad easy except final stage.
I mean the game is what it was. Most other shooters then and before were a lot more unforgiving and memorization heavy even if they had better variation. MUSHA is kinda repetitive but an improvement on the previous Alestes in that regard and better paced than Super Aleste overall. My faves are Spriggan and Power Strike 2 though.
"MUSHA! Another Compile shooter and I've heard many times that this is the holy grail of vertical shooting goodness." Can't think of a better vertical shmup on the base Genesis/MD. Can you? IMO, this game stand right up there with Blazing Lazers (Gunhead) and Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) in the top echelon of 16-bit cart-based vertical scrolling shmups. It's not a coincidence that those games are also by Compile. "This game was one of the early Mega Drive / Genesis titles so it is quite amazing what they managed to get out of Sega's 16-bit hardware at that time. " Indeed. It's an early Genesis/MD 4 mbit cart. Just look at the vertical line scrolling and smooth sprite scaling (done in software) in the second half of level 2! Very impressive effect for that time. "The 6th stage is especially lame with just lava everywhere, but generally the game looks very good. " Lots of contemporary 4 mbit shooters did the lava level thing. Thunder Force III is the most obvious example. Blazing Lazers had levels with very sparse backgrounds too. However, these lava effects were pretty impressive for the time, especially how it warps into the more mechanical backgrounds here. "The sound, however, is a mixed bag. I find the sound effects ok, but the music is a bit too fast-paced and "hectic". Also, it lacks some "depth" which is generally a problem with the Mega Drive's / Genesis's sound hardware. Overall, the music is annoying. " Heh. A fast-paced shmup soundtrack can never be hectic enough. IMO, this game is great example of that Genesis FM synthesis techno sound that many of us love. As far as "depth", the songs structures are actually fairly complex for that time period, featuring a pseudo verse-chorus structure with the "choruses" typically having great hooks. It ain't Yuzo Koshiro or anything, but is a very good shmup soundtrack. Drives the action, like a shmup soundtrack should. "I prefer to have the difficulty raised by interesting enemy patterns and I absolutely hate it if higher difficulty modes just increase the hitpoints. It shows a lack of creativity." This game was released long before the concept of "bullet hell" and different enemy attack patterns became the norm in shmups. As as I recalls, all other shooters worked the same back then. "MUSHA veterans may argue that this is all about skill, but still the hit detection is very inconsistent. " I would agree that it's not the best, but you get a better feel for it as you spend time with the game. I never use the shield weapon though, preferring more offensive firepower. Laser is my go-to by far. From what I've seen of the shield, it spins around you and doesn't offer constant 360 degree protection, so it would make sense for some projectiles to be getting through. Seems like it's meant to improve your chances, but not make you invisible. "I'm not bashing MUSHA, it's a very good game. It's just not *that* great and it's probably that it just hasn't aged very well. 20 years ago it must have been da bomb, but I never owned a Mega Drive / Genesis." I think that it aged rather gracefully. I just replayed it and still found it to be visually and audioally (I think I'm making up this word) pleasant and most importantly, fun, holding my attention and making me finish it in one sitting. Then again, I actually prefer these simple older shmups that were released before the "bullet hell" and puzzle elements took hold. It's not a perfect game, but what is? I still can't think of any other cart-based 16-bit vertical scrolling shooter that's significantly better. Space Megaforce and Blazing Lasers have their own flaws. If you think that there's something significantly better on the Genesis, TG16 or SNES in this specific sub-genre, I'd very very curious to hear what it is. You mentioned Robo Aleste, which I need to spend more time with, and I know that PC-Engine CD has some awesome vertically scrollers too, but it's not quite fair to compare those to 4 Mbit cart games. Cheers.
I can't tell you how many times I was *this* close to beating the game, only to get my last lives wiped out by one of those monster claws reaching out from the walls at the end.
What MAY be leading to some of the hit-detection issues is the fact that every item you pick up, be it a weapon pickup or a coin, grants invincibility frames. That's an intended mechanic in almost every Aleste game, M2's compilation of the SMS and GG games even gives you a timer for how long that lasts. I need to actually play this one myself though so you might be right in it just being weird.
I love how a broken Dire51 is hurtling through space while the music is pumping on. When you mess with the human race, you're gonna get your ass kicked. 😆
I love the music in this one. It's tough for a game that has as much hype as this one does now to live up to that. For me, it does, but I can understand that it would not for others. I think music is a big part of shooters, but music is extremely subjective. Not everyone will like the same style. I prefer the style of music in MUSHA, so it is not annoying for me. It is among my favorite Genesis/Mega Drive soundtracks. Robo Aleste has good quality audio and I like it, but the style is less appealing to me. All you can do is try for yourself and form your own opinion. I was just checking out this video as well as the curel run of Robo Aleste. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
i like this game very very very very much...........music is too good as wel as play .....................from lahore pak, this is master piece video game in mega driver all time my favorite............
If you still want another game in this style, I recommend you Soldier Blade from Turbografix-16 / PC engine, I'm pretty sure you won't regret it, and it's a pretty short game
interesting on some bosses you go to a corner sort of cowardly, on other bosses you are in their face taking it and on other you are maneuvering like intended
Europe version? I remember that was tricky to play with the yellow bomb. The blue shield was the best weapon to get the itens / helper. Some enemys / skins was used in the final stage of the S.T.G. SNES game.
Well I think we can all agree that music is definitely subjective, this game's soundtrack is based off of 80's thrash metal (metallica for ex). That's why it's fast paced and "hectic" which I think strongly contributes to this games sense of manic and excitement. But if your not into that kind of music then yeah you probably won't enjoy it. Which is too bad because its fantastic. Also what do you mean by it lacks "depth"?? I hope you don't mean bass because the Gen chip pumps out wayy more bass than the Snes does (SOR, Adventures of Batman etc). Imo this game is still great, and one of the best 16bit shooters and games. Also a game that "hasn't aged well" just wasn't that great of a game to begin with and that's not the case with this classic. To each his own though, happy gaming!
I definitely agree, his perspective on the music is probably a little of all the things you mentioned, also yeah, the prices have gotten totally absurd, regardless of the games quality. I haven't played the other shooters from Compile just yet but I definitely plan to (such as Space Megaforce and Robo Aleste), I look forward to seeing how Musha stands up against them. I think a good amount of the reason for why this game has ascended in it's popularity is because it's one of father few titles that truly pushes the Genesis to it's technical limits in terms of sound, graphics and presentation, essentially in every way. And all this happened in 1990! Way ahead of what most of the competition (including Sega) were doing with the hardware around the same time (at least in my opinion). Despite all the technical favor though, the gameplay itself is more or less as enjoyable as a game such as Fire Shark, just with much less graphical fidelity, so in that sense, I do think it is slightly overrated, they're alot of great shooters on the Gen.
Yeah that's awesome, Compile is definitely a developer I need to look into more. Personally I wish more of their stuff was on the 16 or 32-bit systems. Just because I enjoy and prefer the audio and graphical quality of those systems more than their 8-bit counterparts. But I should check out those 8-bit games you recommended anyway because a timeless game, is a timeless game after all.
I think by what he means by lacking depth is the pretty pathetic FM drums (imo), especially compared to Thunder Force 3 & 4, Road Rash, and Devilish. All of which are fairly early/earlier Mega Drive games (1988-1992).
Yeah that's fair. In that sense I suppose I would agree the bass is a tad lacking but I guess I never noticed it. Always loved the score the way it was.
I think I get what you mean by the soundtrack "lacking depth". I would think it's the somewhat weak FM drums, especially compared to Thunder Force 3 and of course, 4. It doesn't really get me bangin that much. That being said, I do like your review, as it takes views of the game I've never seen before without getting downright mean. I love unique opinions (for the most part.
Robert McCartney I wouldn't say rarity, more like it's become sought after, thereby driving the prices up. Has happened to a lot of games over the years, look at prices on SNES titles, and some Genesis/MD titles.
@@rayryngaert3769 :) Unfortunately, plenty of people around the world made what the Md games prices are today. I totaly agree with you. I wont spend this amount for a 512ko program file in a factory reproduced packaging (cause that's what it is actually).

Joe Schmoe this game deserves 10/10 for everything, music, graphic, gameplay, design. The best game on megadrive all time all categories.
