This Take From Some Fans Is Just Terrible...

  • Recency bias is a cognitive bias that favours recent events over historical ones. Recently, we saw the rise of Canucks third-string goaltender Arturs Silovs and this has led a small fragment of Canucks fans to forget Thatcher Demko's body of work. I have heard some interesting takes on Twitter and Reddit, and in this video I provide my response.
Thanks for watching, and please consider subscribing!

people saying we should trade demko are dumb, despite arturs silovs playing stellar demko is much better, i mean he is literally a runner up for the vezina trophy. i do believe though that he will 100% be backup next year and we wont resign desmith, another team might pick him up though since desmith is not that bad. also silovs being very good should help with demko not having to be overplayed in the regular season and he can remain healthy for the playoffs and the whole regular season.

Silovs has the inside track on the backup goaltending position, but he can not come into camp expecting that it is his job. He can not have a repeat of last season, where he got absolutely lit up in the first preseason game and did not see the crease again the rest of the preseason.

It would be insane to trade away Demko, but I do think that we will see a 1a/1b setup in the not-so-distant future, with Demko playing at least 60% of the games. He clearly does have a predisposition to injuries (the dude literally had double hip surgery at 20) and this will significantly lighten the load off of him. Silovs just needs to do his part and treat every game like it's the playoffs.

Demko is a Vezina quality goalie. I understand why some people are talking trade though . He has proven to be injury prone . Maybe with reducing his workload during the season , it will help with the injuries. I’m sure Ian Clark , and Demers will be working on that this year. But if Demko gets hurt late in next season again, or early on in the playoffs , than we will be exactly were we are this year… out of the playoffs. Hopefully with training , and managing his workload , this will not happen again.

The Canucks need to address their pucking moving, puck carrying, offensive transition and along the boards play. If you strengthen their offense, then they will spend less time on their end, reducing the number of shots. The idea is the Canucks are deep in net, so trade one of them to add depth on defense or offense with the above attributes in mind.
One reason why you want to consider trading Demko is because you cannot assume he will be the same Demko after this injury given how well Silov played in the playoffs, his age and his salary (upcoming salary since he is an RFA).
The majority of the Canucks are not built for today's NHL, even though they did play well in the regular season, the playoffs exposed them as not being able to play the full length of the ice. Boeser for instance is only good from the offensve hashmarks to behind the offensive net. The only guys who are good 200ft of the entire ice is JT Miller and Garland. Along this same note, this is why I think Hughes needs to move up to the forward position to enable him to affect the entire ice, being on defense holds back his effectiveness below the offensive hashmarks (he can dangle through multiple defenders, only to give up the puck by passing to a teammate or by shooting prematurely without entering the higher chance danger zone because he feels he is abandoning his defensive responsibilities).
You could keep Demko, but then he would be equally ineffective given who is playing in front of him.

    • @raredreamfootage
      @raredreamfootage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@zjsz4954 The way to think of it is Hughes can only affect the ice up until inside the offensive blue line. If he can freely play all the way below the goal line, he'll produce even more scoring chances. Having such a gifted offensive talent handcuffed by having him play on defense is mind boggling to me.
Yes he is a Norris Trophy Finalist and most likely winner, but if you placed Pavel Datsyuk on defense, he would also be a Norris Trophy Finalist, but he was more effective as a center.

There have been times when we had multiple great goalies at the same time and had to trade one, and maybe we are headed down that road again... eventually. Its not that outlandish to consider a Demko trade. His stock is still fairly high but he has an asterisk by his name with respect to his injury proanesss. You can be the greatest player in the world but if you suffer from the injury bug more often than not and are not available for the most part in the season like in the playoffs. Then your greatness has little or no value. The Kanucks showed they are a contender but still have a couple of holes to fill before they are considered a serious contender. A Demko trade could help fill some of those holes.

I also disagree that Arturs Silovs hasn’t earned the crease because of some screen shots that went in. There’s no real right decision when a team has 2 amazing goalies let alone the 3 that Vancouver has. You either trade one of them and risk getting something awful in return. Or wait for Demko to lose popularity after a couple of bad games and start Silovs. Canucks best chance of winning a cup left with Roberto Luongo. The fan base just ran him out of town after winning a gold medal with Canada 😂. I see the same future with Silovs that I see now with Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. I’d trade one of the goalies not because I’d get something amazing in return even though I would because of their performance. But it’s because I wouldn’t want either of them to face the unforgiving Canuck fan base that’s going to eventually come after a few bad games. Demko’s already under scrutiny.

Do I think we should trade Demko? No, absolutely not. People who says this are very reactionary and should be laughed out of the room. Vezina goaltenders don’t grow on trees and trading that away would be devastating.
That being said, I believe it’s reasonable to be concerned about Demko’s health. He can’t stay healthy for a whole year. We never really cared cause the team hasn’t been good but now that it is, important to have a starting goalie who can remain healthy for the playoffs. After all, what’s the point of a 50 win regular season if your starting, Vezina level goalie gets injured in game 1 and significantly impairs the team. I think next season will be a watershed moment. If Demko can’t stay healthy for the playoffs, while I would still disagree, I think the trade talk would be more warranted.

Demko not playing till the WCF was NOT the plan all along. Demko being the starter through the playoffs was the plan. Recency vs historical... both involve Demko being injured for long stretches having serious effects on the team. Is Demko the better goalie.. of course.. is he reliable to actually be in the net when needed NOOOOOOO. Last year the team was bad because they went into the year thinking Demko would be the starter and he was injured and then out of the line up. This year they went into the playoffs thinking Demko would be the starter and then he is not available. It is bad management to go into a season or a playoffs depending on Demko to be healthy. That is not recency bias.. that is just historical reality.
So it is not dumb or a terrible take to look into trading him when his value to others in the league is high. In fact not looking at what value you could get for him would be dumb and terrible management. You don't seem to get that Demko being better is meaningless when he is always injured, when you cannot rely on him to be available when it matters. Demko isn't getting younger and his knees, hips and groin are not going to get better over time as he enters his 30's. Keep him fine. But given his status as a "vezina finalist" on a good contract.. if there is a good deal to be had for valuable assets the SMART play is to make that deal and not hold on to a declining, aging, unreliable asset that is going to want a raise in a year even though he has not actually won anything for the team or himself.

Trade Demko…😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🫡😂😂🤣🤣🤣 it’s ridiculous on its face. Silovs is a good tender. He will most certainly be an elite tender in a few years, but he’s not Demko. And you’re correct when you point out that Demkos’ salary is a straight up bargain in the nhl for what he brings to the team. And for the record,I don’t think DeSmith should lose his spot as back up…but that’s just me I guess.
